Where's the passengers and role for the Dropship/Orca? Landings?
I suspect that pilot seats being populated, passengers and roles for the Dropship and Orca will be added when they add walking around ships, or thereabouts. I expect that will be a paid for expansion. This is just my guess, mind. I don't have any hard facts.

I could be wrong on this and I hope I am,

I think you may be. Unless said trader has joined an opposing faction, there will be absolutely no change as to how things are now. Of course if they are in an opposing faction they are fair game.

this update wont stop the current trend of undesirable groups attacking players for no reason but will give them more freedom,

this bit worried me as its basically saying lets send traders into a warzone. sure we have wings but lets be honest, wings are not always available to players taking on a trading role and this is where NPC wings needs to be added for players wanting to play a trading role. combat players are more likely to form wings but traders tend to be lone wolves to protect their trade routes.

I don't think you will be forced to enter a combat zone unless you want to actively push that faction in that way. Traders can push their influence via trading and if all else fails they pragmatically switch trading factions.

I'm interested in how working for one of these factions will effect my overall reputation with the major powers? I don't want to work for Factions if it's going to damage my reputation with the glorious empire.

I expect (hope) that you would have to choose which imperial faction you support which might help your reputation with some parts of the empire and harm it with others. Only time will tell just how nuanced and deep it's going to be.

(Posing, shallow, slave trader. ;))

Citation from the newsletter: "For example, if a major economic Power sends in their traders for a financial takeover against a military powerhouse, the other side may be tasked with piracy missions to destroy or loot their cargo."

Since this would be impossible, if the traders could just hide in open, participating in PP should be lmited to open players only, IMHO.

You for real?

Going to disagree.
If I can run away from an NPC Anaconda beating my shields in, I can run away from a player Anaconda doing the same thing.

No you can't, cause my annac is fitted with 5 railgun and my first shhot will raise your shield, my second will put you at something like 60% hull, and my wingmates will focus your drives, and we'll breack your cargo hatch... Players are a real threat, npc are just something near nothing..

Do i hear a big sigh of relief from the PvE'ers among us ?

Finally, it seems, ED receives some structured PvE mechanics, giving visible, "hands on" feedback to player actions.

The days of "just a dot on the map changing color, or just a stat changing by a decimal" might almost be over. No more (or at least much less) of that "use your imagination" business.

Something concrete and purposeful at last.

To me 1.3 looks promising, and very close to what i have been hoping for.

Need to see it all in action first of course, but at least a sense of anticipation has returned now.

The main thing I'm looking forward to in this update is being able to target stuff from the System Map screen. It wasn't in the newsletter, but Michael has said it will be in 1.3. It was originally due in 1.2 but didn't quite make it.

Couldn't find anything in the thread.

Hopefully they have improved missions massively, no more USS trawling.

Not sure about the other missions, but they've already said that assassination missions will involve both USS trawling *and* finding your target in SC (so you'll need an interdictor module for those missions now).

No apparent plans for releasing the Fed Corvette for what seems to be such a faction-heavy update. While Imperials get a second ship, leaving the Feds stuck with the heap of a dropship as their only faction-specific ship. Hard to stay excited when I've spend the last couple months saving up funds, grinding up to Post Commander in preparation for this ship they announced that's just nowhere to be found now.

Both new vehicles look like cargo haulers to me. The Corvette's counter would be Cutter. Unless that last coffee I had was one too many.

I disagree with your lone wolf statement. If a trader decides to be a lone wolf for the sole reason to protect his secret and profitable trade route, it's only natural that he has to deal with the higher risk of potentially having to fend off attackers alone. I think it's very good that trading players have the option of this tradeoff between more safety and larger profit margins and can decide for themselves how much risk they want to take.

I do agree with you on NPC wingmen, though. Being able to hire those would be a great addition to the game and open up all kinds of interesting gameplay possibilities - in addition to allowing solo players to play in wings and protect their trading vessels.
