Powerplay Discussion Thread

Looks good on the face of it. Glad to see something from EVE is making it here. Factional warfare hopefully properly done.

Factional warfare was PvP orientated, this is going to be whoever can farm the most Npcs in Solo dominated =D

Been playing since beta, and powerplay sounds like the game so many people were expecting at launch. It is exciting! :)

Honestly, I was just happy to hear that mining was getting the love it deserved.

For me personally it gets a 'Meh'.
I'm really not into the politics side of things, or big space wars, like every other space related game/sim out there. I'm a solo player who just enjoys the scientific aspects and a space flight sim with a little combat. I hope I don't have to be forced to choose a side/faction just to get any sort of missions that are worthwhile for a anyone in anything bigger that a sidewinder, or any of the other benefits that seem to be aimed more at the PvP/Online groups crowd.
I worry for the direction ED is going.

but what is being done to promote sweet freedom of consenting adults to purchase firearms and stimulants from me through less than legal means? what is being done to promote me pushing illegal goods in smaller ships and smaller quantities to avoid imperial entanglements? what is being done to make it so selling the goods that citizens want but are unjustly denied by the powers that be profitable with the added risk of fines and federal gestapo interdictions?

I think that PP is a good enanchement for the game, but the simulation side of Elite Dangerous seems to be forgotten.
Playing for the glory of my faction will be nice, but having the features someone suggest in other thread, like planetary scan, alien missions, new starport models, exploration targets, more interaction with the "empty galaxy" (e.g. the closed areas) would have been better.
What I can not explain is why taking more than a month for giving us this "exiting" news, when, at the end, we are talking only about a community goal improvement. Instead of 1.3, it should be named 1.11

You dont have to get involved at all. Also some of those may actually have a need for explorers or traders, it's not just about war. And it works in solo too, afaik no PVP in solo.

Possibly. However, it's laughably easy to solve. Other games simply take the flat hovering UI, scale it up and have it curve around the player in VR, like a cinema screen. Simple and effective. As for the assertion that "they shouldn't be held back by development devices such as the DK2"- take a look at their preferred way to show it off at public events some time.

I get its a prototype but there's no other way to play once you've tried it! I find with decent calibration and supersampling the text is perfectly legible anyway. VR should be the prime concern for this game IMO... When it drops at the end of the year or next , ED is in prime position to be the goto game... Hell they already are! frontier would be mad to not factor in VR issues when designing new content! Perhaps there are VR considerations we do not yet know of?

It looks horrendous for VR users. that busy, text-heavy UI is going to be terrible chore to read in the DK2. Big black mark for the UI designers there.

I've got a DK2. Just make sure you change the font to Green, and if you need to lean in. Remember, DK2 is a "Developer" kit. I expect it to be more readable with the consumer version.

Edit: Do'h! Ninja'd like 7 fold.

I am very optimistic about this update, Community events is something I have enjoyed doing most so far. Even if you're playing in solo it's fun to occasionally take a peek at the galnet feed and see that what you are doing has a brader context.

Hmm, I'm not impressed so far, but it'll come down to whether there's any actual new content behind the missions offered; otherwise it looks like all they've done is put a lore based wrapper around what already exists, and added yet another reputation grind on top of it. And whilst player driven narrative works in EvE, the PvE and actual gameplay there is infamously bad. It's not so bad here, but the same problem will exist; if you are bored of trading here (and notice the screenshot shows a simple trading mission yet again) it won't suddenly become more exciting because you're doing it to change a small ownership flag on a system... What's more, you can't get EvE scale fights or influence here because of the way Peer to Peer instancing works.

I'd much rather see more scripted PvE events (random Generation Ships etc) and focused PvP (King of the Hill type fights etc) than what we're being offered at a first glance. But we will see, perhaps there is new gameplay not yet revealed.

The mission system is being revamped.

Where are the Laura Ashley curtains for my Asp????

Apart from that this update looks to add some meat to the bone. Now being in the Empire will actually mean something.

I don't - not at all. I get that some players don't have any interest in the politics, and others are perfectly happy with 100% undirected sandbox play. That's cool.

What I like about Powerplay is that FD have come up with a solution to many aspects of gameplay that the majority of players thought were missing, without that having to impact on solo players, or those who have no interest, and without using typical MMO mechanics. It's all entirely optional.

It allows for character progression without having "levels" ; character improvement without "perks" or "buffs" ; immersion without scripted quests ; virtual player organizations without guilds ; a reason to acquire ranks and money other than just for their own sake ; development of the political background ; and major outcomes without endgame content.

Personally I think it would be great fun to continue to play a lone-wolf pilot, making a living in that mileau but without taking part - it will just add a lot of action and backstory.

The ego maniac in me is intrigued by having a vote in the decisions a power takes. And the idea of player created powers is mind blowing (i'm looking at you, goons) .... Bring it on :)

If powerplay is about bringing players into competition and cooperation with each other by giving them an opportunity to take sides - surely if a solo player joins one of these factions regardless of their solo status, they should become visible to opposing factions and colleagues in their own faction? What motivation could there be to enter into a competitive game mode but yet remain invisible to other players you are competing/cooperating with?
