Horizons Prospecting. Anyone got a guide/tips?

I've been trying to find out how to more efficiently prospect. I've come across this that has some great info but I'm still a bit confused about how to find my own resources by exploring and what clues to look for. I'm not sure if you just have to keep searching until you find a planet that has what you want or look for signs that make the planet have a high probability that it will have what you want.

Things I'm curiuos about.

Does metal content matter on ice planets?
Do pristine reserves matter?
How do you identify areas of past vulcanism?
What items on the system map matter for prospecting?

If anyone has any ideas or has a good resource I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

I'd like to find an actual guide as well. I've been doing a lot of prospecting of my own, and it seems that the materials for fixing/arming the SRV are easy to find, but the important ones to rearm the AFM unit and FSD Injections are very rare. It would be great to know what star/world/composition/terrain to look for. Still haven't found germanium, but I think I know where to look for valadium. Is it all just random, or are commanders keeping this knowledge secret, like it's a spoiler? There should be an ingame database. Something we can use to look up basic information.

Element: Tungsten
Appearance: grayish white, lustrous
Alternate Name: wolfram
Atomic Number: 74
Primarily Used For: ship and SRV ammunition
Commonly Found On: your mama
Ok, maybe something a little more useful than that example.

I've found enough Germanium that I've stopped collecting it. Zirconium is my problem child. You can also find it at the barnacles if you destroy it's tentacles/growths whatever. I'm just curious if their is a rhyme or reason to it or if it's just random. It's hard to tell what clues to look for.

Thanks for the link. I've already scanned through that post, and it is extremely useful. I tried using their charts for where minerals might be found, but my surveys are yeilding different results than their charts. I prospected the heck out of 3 seperate Metal Rich worlds, but didn't find any valadium at all. I finally started finding it in the deep blue cracks of an icy world, which their chart indicates is one of the lesser chance worlds. That's why I'm wondering if the spawns are governed by things like star-type, gravity, terrain-type, etc.

Yes, terrain makes a huge difference, also sun type and planets.

If you want some Vanadium, try Zeta Aquila A1, and A3... These are well inside the bubble and close to the starter systems. I have found loads.

Awesome! Thanks Kitty. My ship is out in deep space atm, but when I get home from work I'll check that system for star/planet type. This is the type of information that should be readily accessable to space explorers, but it's a game so I understand why the devs want players to discover everything new for themselves.

I spent a few weeks doing a lot of prospecting for materials, tracking what I found, where and sometimes in what quantities. It pretty much verified the spreadsheet in the link I provided. However...

Zinc for example is pretty common, but not all planets, on some it is very rare or non-existent. The only stuff that is really common everywhere is Sulphur and Phosphorous. Which is how it should be as that is used for SRV Fuel and ammo. My suggestion is to make up your own spreadsheet, you will not regret it :)
