pseudo military shows that are 'elite-ish' .. firefily, etc.

I will expand on this post, what I miss I will add.

Think of tv shows and books of 'privateer' tv shows and books of ex military types who either go rogue, or retire and continue in the life.

The TV series Firefly.

I now grudgingly add 'Andromeda', which is actually what star trek was intended to be, but couldn't be sold. (the federation had fallen, this is an attempt to rebuild it)

Andromeda fired its good writers about the second season, at which time it became Sorbo in hot pants.
'Hercules' at lt's best, maybe, with lasers. from then on.

While it is a capital ship, and a ship of the line, its very pirate like and double dealing.

I only recommend watching Andromeda for the first 2 seasons then stopping.
It pretty much jumps the shark and you need to stop.

Did you mean Hyperdrive, or Star Hyke? Both of which were reasonably poor sci-fi comedies, but the latter had Claudia Christian in various states of undress at least.

I refuse to watch Hyperdrive on the very sound principle that Miranda Hart is in it, who is the least funny comedy person on TV, second only to James Corden.

i'd not heard of star hyke, and didn't remember hyperdrive until you mentioned Miranda, then it was 'oh yea, that crap.' that wins the prize for the worst tv show ever made in my view, I've heard better jokes from a four year old.

I only watched the funny hat one, and only half of that.
its, difficult.

I hadn't heard of starhyke, I will look into that one.

doesn't that rule itself out for being american? ;)

unfortunately, it doesn't rule itself out for being 100% for the earth defense directorate: "our way or no way".

It's really quite facetious, at least as much as startrek's federation was.

It doesn't suck (well, the first season didn't) , but be prepared for the contrast of 'old freedoms' vs 'new earth directorate style'

my apologies, I'm not finding the season 1 open with the William Conrad voice over, that didn't suck.

Love the brilliant open.. it doesn't age, so to speak.

feel free to shoot these down for not fitting in with your rogue goal, or just not being very good.

Suggestions:
 • Pigs in space (from the muppet show)

 • Space Above and Beyond

Did you know that Ian Bell once said Firefly was, in his opinion, Elite converted to a TV show? Well, now you do. [citation needed]

I note that my esteemed colleague above included Crusade. Babylon 5 itself, Crusade's progenitor, counts too, I think, in that it does include focus on trade, industry and culture of all species and factions, as well as a schism between different aspects of Earth culture where one thinks itself superior to the other (telepaths vs mundanes) - very reminiscent of Empire vs Federation.

Space: Above and Beyond. That most rare creature, good Sci-Fi on the telly. Naturally it was cut short after the first season. :(
