PvP and Open Play Should be Required to Unlock Engineers!

I thought I made it pretty clear. I want EVERYONE to be forced into doing something they would not otherwise do in order to advance in the game. I'm forced to explore and trade against my will. Players who enjoy those activities need to feel my pain.

Since many of these players are carebears, I want them to be subjected to openplay and PvP against their will.

Or, we could just do something like what FDev proposed here:

...and allow people to play the way they want. It is a game, after all.
"Carebear" the age old PvPers goto attitude to folks who don't want to take part in their form of gameplay.
If you met me you would see im far from a carebear :ROFLMAO:

But didn't you say that you had done them already?

I've been playing since 2017 and have every engineer unlocked too... And I don't enjoy mining, 'exploring' (but quite happy to spend some time sightseeing, on occasion') and trading was done at the start of playing and I had well over 50 markets unlocked before I took any notice of engineering.

Done PvP with a group, in stock sideys or eagles, and spent thousands of hours playing in open.

The fortunate thing is that unlocking the 4 common knowledge engineers unlocks the Colonia ones, and Colonia is far more fun than the bubble, in my opinion.
Yeah, I've been playing since about 2016 and I have roughly 3500hrs invested over 2 accounts. But, I've restarted about 4 times. The fun of the game for me is in building. In building ships & building my personal empire.

I do not want an easy button. I want a way to unlock engineers & gathering materials that is not completely disconnected from my preferred style of gameplay. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Just add a way to unlock engineers and earn all material types via combat, and you will never hear from me again (because I'll be too busy playing the game).

Lol...that thread is over 6 months old. If FD ever do anything to re-balance engineers it probably won't happen for another year, if that.

I too hate being forced into ridiculous loops of grindy repetitive gameplay, but it seems the dev team that built the stellar forge and this wonderful galaxy can't seem to master the game part of their game. How many re-works has engineers had, 3...4? It's still atrocious.

I think there is a reason that most players explore the galaxy its because at its heart Elite has and always will be a lone wolf affair, we always have struck out on our own the explore something never before seen. Elite 1,2 and 3 were all single player games, some play 4 in Solo because they wanted that to be the same.

Requesting PvP be a unlocking factor would change nothing at all for someone in Solo its like locking the game away behind combat when someone is only out exploring it does nothing at all just annoys those that want to unlock everything.

This guy gets it.

I would say one rework, the change from the casino to the current system, and a couple of tweaks.

How many times do we need to point out that WE ARE ALL "forced into doing something they would not otherwise do" to unlock Engineers, already?

Are you saying that an explorer should be able to access all Engineers with exploration alone? And a trader should be able to access all Engineers with trade alone? Maybe you'd be OK with that, but you're not winning anyone over by emphasising combat all the time.

He doesn’t want to make anyone else’s game experience better he wants to make it as bad or worse than his own was.

Players need to be exposed to all facets of the game. That's what people tell me, when I complain about unlock requirements...

If I'm required to go exploring to unlock Professor Palin & required to go mining to unlock Selene Jean, despite the fact that I have no interest in these activities, why shouldn't solo traders be required to play in open for 20 hours and win 5 PvP matches to unlock Felicity Farseer?

Fair is fair and everyone needs to broaden their horizons, no?
:)

Mining and exploring may not be everybody's taste, but being ganked with no reason is surely worst.

Gankers should start thinking that it's their behaviour that pushes people out of open play.

I take it your joking as nobody would be that arrogant LOL :)

Take into consideration the unlocks should be varied for each engineer not just "Bring me a relic" or "bring me some extremely rare brandy" etc, there should be "kill this double crossing scum" or "scan this area for me". All of which would expand the game no end and allow everyone to unlock the engineer their way not just do their shopping.

The solution that would surely please the most players would be to remove engineering altogether: But... Extended capability non-combat modules on sale in outfitting, for a premium price, so that explorers, miners & traders (and combat-centric players) are able to 'improve' their fleet for purpose.

Combat related modules, shields, armour, reinforcements and weaponry to remain stock. It still permits combat focused builds, but should ensure that there is no massive improvement in either offence or defence as is currently implemented with engineering. This would open combat for anyone interested, without the need to spend however long it takes to collect mats and unlock engineers, no barriers! (I had a good stock of mats before even noticing engineering, so have no idea how long 'average Joe' might take)

I've had a mild change of heart with respect to the OP.

1) The OP is a completely transparent effort to get targets (this is not the change of heart part).

2) There should be an engineer only unlocked through CQC that modifies ship launched fighters.
