Is anything going to be done to remove the repeating patterns?

Is anything going to be done to remove the repeating patterns?
To answer the OP, I honestly do not think anything will be done. Frontier is showcasing their new coloring system (which I think looks great) using planets that show clear pattern repeating, like the one I highlighted above. I'm pretty sure it's here to stay.

If these were purely textures seen from orbit, then I could see them changing it, but as I understand it, these textures are transformed into actual terrain maps as you approach the planet, so changing them changes the terrain, which in turn changes the layout of any bases or outposts on the surfaces of these planets, and I just don't see Frontier making such a drastic change at this point.

This is why we should have had a longer alpha / beta, to flush out things like this so changes could have been made before the live build stellar forge was "reforged". Now I believe it's too late, unless Frontier pulls a Hello Games and reforges the live galaxy. That would be pretty disruptive to some.

FWIW, not all planets have this noticeable repeating / tiling. Some of the planets shown in Frontier's latest posts look incredibly realistic. For me it's the planets that use very "unique" patterns (like my planet dude, along with the dragon, the gun, and the snake) that catch my eye, especially if those patterns are in proximity to each other.

But just to put it into perspective, FDEV aren't the only ones having this issue, people rage about it on the forums as if it's a thing unique to FDEV, but other games that model planets also have similar texture issues that are "difficult to resolve" also.

Nice try.... oh you
but....
There is not patterns here.
they are not even similar...

As someone posted, you can see it in real planets too, and once you are convinced it's a major issue you will see patterns even when there are none. Like staring at clouds.

Doesn't mean the planets are perfect, but it is a bit overdone. As usual. :p I have been to 150 planets or so and never felt I had been to the same 'level' or anything. Maybe it's best to just play rather than analyze screenshots...

I think the "rage" (frustration in my case) is that it's a downgrade from Horizons. I'm not talking planet tech in general - I fully admit that the screenshots shown in the latest dev diary post are pretty darn amazing. Rather I'm specifically thinking of the very obvious "in your face" repetition seen in at least some planets, something I've never noticed in Horizons (not counting obviously natural repetition like round craters).

I also think the closer you come to perfection, the more the warts stand out. I'm more forgiving of "crappy planet tech" in a game like NMS than I am Elite, since Elite comes so close to realistic-looking planets. Again, there's the upgrade vs downgrade aspect of it. The thing that makes me "rage" is all the pop-in, flickering shadows, and inflatable mountains in Odyssey that are very rare in Horizons. This is one of main reasons I'm not interested in Odyssey at the moment (performance issues being #1). This repetition issue wouldn't bother me that much if it's only a small percentage of planets that have it.

There were occasions of "in your face" obvious in early Horizons at least, it certainly got better as they worked on the planet tech and you no longer saw stuff like my screenshot here, but it was there if you looked for it. One of the advantages of beigeification is that it hid a lot of flaws under a coat of flat paint. It's still there but not longer as bad in Horizons, for the most part if you don't look hard you can't see it;

I just don't remember the same sort of rage then as we are seeing now!

Is it?

I mean is it really, or is it similar-ish?

This is nitpicking IMO, especially when there are far more obvious "in your face" examples. If you have to look for repetition like a "Where's Waldo" book, then that's not really such a big deal. It's the "duplicate stamp" effect that reaches out from the screen and grabs you by the eyeballs which is of greater concern.

Is this an OCD thing? I mean i tap the handle to my front door twice when i leave the house and i was asked recently why i press the lock button on my cars keyfob twice when i walk away, but in my head it’s to make sure people don’t haz my stuffs. Analysing planet surfaces in a game just doesn’t trigger me like 4 tins of beans on a shelf with labels pointing different ways or opening a bag of doritos from the bottom. I just need to understand why this is so important. It feels like one of those youtube videos when people see a rock on mars and instead see an ancient urn or an alien calculator.

Sorry, did i think out loud again, please carry on.
