You know what I mean: you post a question and add some choices that other users can vote upon and we can see the results.
How do I create a poll on the forum?

Thank you! o7

Polls are not allowed on the forum. Even if you link to an external poll.

Aww..for real??? It's for the benefit of THE GAME! :( I see the end is drawing close. Maybe in 2 years (tops) we'll ALL receive this message from Frontier Developments: "Sorry we're shutting down the servers. Thank you for all of your support throughout these years." 😭

So...because polls are not allowed on the forum you direct the thread towards a doom thread?
Yes, because I just wanted to point a fact - The number 1 activity the majority of players want in elite dangerous is: COMBAT! Combatting pirates, other factions, combatting the Thargoids and even...other players! If the poll could prove my point, I would suggest how to get new players and most importantly; KEEP these new players playing!

I might sound gloomy, but just look at the steam chart: player numbers are not really increasing! Where do you think ED will be by the end of next year? Or even in 2 years?
So, yeah, I have all reason to be gloomy.

Anyway I'm posting my suggetions already...

Polls were banned/disabled due to people abusing polls to push a false narrative. Its quite easy to phrase polls to obtain the results you want or direct discussions in the way you want them to go.

If you want to present an opinion, just present your opinion, instead of trying to manufacture support for your opinion through a poll.

It is quite possible that in a couple of years FD will shut down their servers, or maybe not. But the ability to create polls or not will not affect whether that happens.

Then, the ED community is a very weird community, unfortunately! First time I hear that a game's forum has banned polls!!! o_O

Besides I didn't even KNOW it was possible to manipulate polls!

"trying to manufacture support for your opinion through a poll."
I take that as an INSULT!

Don't. Its quite normal and people even do it unconsciously, without even realizing they are doing it.

As for it being weird, not really. I've seen it time and again across different forums. The difference here is FD simply decided to get rid of the problem rather than let it linger.

You wouldn't believe some of the polls we had back in the early days.

But looking at your post history, you seem to be on a crusade to "save" ED.

Trust me, you can't save ED. I don't mean this in a bad way or am implying that ED is doomed. Its just every game has its shelf-life and ED has had a decent run of close to 10 years. Maybe FD could do more to keep it going (and its my personal hope they do), but that depends on FD, not me or you or forum polls.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to money and business decisions. If FD decide its worth it to keep investing in ED, they will do and try to keep it going. If not, they will shut down the servers.

Basically enjoy ED while you can and leave the saving of the game (or not) up to FD.

Here you go, i'll give you an example of how polls can be manipulated.

Q: Griefers are everywhere in the game and are ruining it for everyone else! Should FD take action against griefers in game?
A1: Yes, they should be permabanned from the game
A2: Yes, they should get a month ban at first then a permaban the second time
A3: Yes, they should get a warning at first, then a ban if they persist
A4: LOL, no. Git gud loser!

So, i note at least 4 issues with this poll.

1) Leading statement. Making the issue seem like something that is causing widespread problems for a majority of players. Framing the situation in a way that causes people concern beyond what is most likely the reality of the situation.

2) What is the definition of a griefer? Each person will have their own opinion. For some people this will include people who simply kill people without reason. While unpleasant for many, its generally not considered griefing unless its persistently done against the same player. Also, is the target actually taking any action to stop it happening or are they perhaps bating the "griefer" in order to get them banned?

3) Stacking of answers in favour of action being taken. 3 answers where punishment should be applied and one where not. Also ordering of answers matters with calls to action coming first.

4) The only negative response is phased to make it seem like selecting this option makes you a jerk. There is no neutral option presented in the poll either.

It's not exactly about manipulating polls, it's manipulating the narrative. Years ago, a popular ED content creator created a poll asking players if they want ship interiors in the future.

Given that the choices are either new content or no new content, obviously people will pick "YES". So it paints a narrative that majority of players wanted ship interiors. However that ignores the nuance that new content needs resources to develop, resources that FDev don't really have (then & now, especially now).

Later another poll was created, if FDev have enough resources for only 1 new content, full atmospheric planets or ship interiors, which one would players choose. Guess what, full atmospheric planets won. So it seems that ship interiors is not the most requested feature as how some people would like us to believe.

Yeah, poll manipulation is almost a science these days, political polls specially, but any group of people with a firm conviction and a lack of understanding of how polling should be done to remove poll bias can post a poll that unintentionally misrepresents or skews the result in the way they want. I personally don't blame FDEV for banning them, and being annoyed with them them for banning polls is indeed counterproductive, just reinforces the idea they were right when banning them.

Excellent example.

This is also exactly what happened with the polls for Star Citizen back in 2013 and 2014. They basically asked gamers if they wanted more content in their games.

No surprise on the poll results. Wasn't helped by Roberts stating more money given would result in features being developed quicker... and we all know how that went.

Well it worked right, they got more money, and the second part may be right as well, the difference between getting a second system in ten years time or twenty years time is still a feature being developed quicker, so unless they put a time frame on that statement they can still claim it is 100% true, oh the wonder of polls....lol!
