Question - Is pc version being curtailed because of console versions?

Am I the only one to think there is a correlation in the timelines of ps4.5 and xb1+ gaining market share enabling fd to revisit planets and undo the great beigification now? Ie its taken nearly two years to put that one right, and during that time when they were steadfadtly refusing to fix it, consoles incrementally advance and whoah look theyve fixed beige planets.

Well, obviously!

@OP

The game is developed on PC's using Frontiers own engine, Cobra. The code is then translated/complied to enable it to run on other Operating such as MAC, Xbox and PS4.

Why do you not suggest that the the game is being held back by Mac's as an equally valid (but just as erroneous) posit?
Obvious answer is because Frontier dumped Mac support when they started work on Horizons, so it couldn't *possibly* be holding them back.

sorry i couldnt reply until, now, was at work. people dont need to be impolite because i asked a question, what i was mainly refering too, was future possible content, like space legs, better VR support things like that, will we ever be able to use oculus touch controllers to wave our hands about and pick stuff up. or does the fact that the game has to run on pc and console mean things like that will not happen, because consoles not even psvr can do hand movement like a pc VR system. i was just wondering out loud, people dont need to be nasty.

You just answered your own question. VR is strictly a PC thing, in Elite. How would anything that's going on on consoles influence it?

As for the Occulus touch and the likes, well, the game is designed to be operated by either HOTAS/Controller in VR (You have to, after all, fly the ship. That's all you do). I don't really see how touch controls would make things better.

chris, what im saying is, will frontier work on things that will not cross over onto console, to me it looks like they want to keep parity with all the different versions of the game, so if consoles cant do VR does that mean PC wont either ?

please watch this echo arena video someone wait, and imagine if we could do this as part of elite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SHAhpAGNwI&feature=youtu.be

Do you see anything that would indicate that?
I see VR support, Ultra high-res textures, wide wariety of supported joysticks,... All PC-only features.
Whether it will change in the future, well, that's up to them to decide, but for now, I bet we're quite safe. ;)

VR in elite hasnt changes in years, its very basic, look around in a fixed location, and i cant see them changing it, i hope they do, but my question stands.

Couldn't it be the fact that throughout the whole game your character doesn't leave the pilot chair? :p
Once (if) spacelegs become a thing, then sure, we'll see how far can devs push the VR, but for now, fixed location is pretty much what we are. :)

I often think that the game is hamstrung to the lowest common denominator, and thats why three years into the game, despite very vociferous requests for an increase, we are still only allowed two fire buttons. And that desire to keep parity with the console versions means that other behind the scenes things could conceivably be similarly hamstrung in elite on pc.

Do you have any proof to back up your assertions or is it just typical forum hyperbole?

Nope! We're not restricted to two fire buttons on Xbox so how can that hinder anything? We're used to using button combo's so no problems here on more fire buttons.
Best lay that blame where it belongs but it isn't at the consoles doorstep.

Yes in the same season that FD expanded Horizons to the console market we went from an near infinite variety of planets to just two. One beige, one white!

Let's just let that sink in for a moment.

Except that is not the when or the reason. The main reason was that planets took a massive fps hit no matter what system you were in even if you had a 1080ti. I would go from 200fps in space to about 40fps on planets on my PC. It was for all systems that they made the change.

But again people conveniently forget about these things. Now with the new shaders, they are not getting the same slowdown as before and planets will look better then ever. And it's going to be seen on the consoles too.

Seems to me it was an issue with the original shaders and not the consoles.

I indeed feel the hostility directed at you wasn't warranted. People just tire of the idea that consoles are holding the game back, I suppose. I only game on Xbox, but would support PC-only features if my platform couldn't handle it. The answer is that we don't know if Frontier would do it. It certainly seems like another year or two would pass before it's considered, though.

It'd suck if space legs wouldn't work on my xbox, but if it gave a substantial amount of life to the game for PC players? Please, Frontier, give them their content. Seeing as the minimum requirements still fall below a base console variant, I suspect this won't happen soon. The first people to be left behind would be those on a low-end PC. If Frontier show a willingness to raise the minimum specs again, we'll know they're not afraid to do it.

No.
They weren't refusing to fix it for ages, they weren't giving any response for ages.
Also, I'm an Xbox CMDR and I remember the time before the beige and was just as put out by it as you. The beige didn't happen because of consoles, it happened because of a side effect of FD changing the way planet surfaces displayed their composition.

If you have a look back through the threads about the beige plague, you'll see FD finally responding about it and telling us exactly what the problem was.

Namely that composition was more accurate but was based on Earth standard colouration for those substances - which is mainly brown/beige. Now it's taken ages for them to get that better composition system to display accurate colours for the substances.

Well to my mind is simple as:

Can the best console achieve performance like the best pc? LOL by far NOT.
Will a company let pc reviews and videos show the game on pc's with much better graphics than consoles, where behind consoles are you know.. company giants? LOL NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.

I'm so glad I downloaded the system update that gives my 3 year old standard Xbox One the hardware of the 1X, otherwise I'd be stuck in 2.4 forever!

By the logic of some in this thread, the REAL people who are holding back Elite's development are the PC players who run it at minimum spec.

If it weren't for consoles holding us back, we would have achieved technological singularity ten years ago.

I know that you are just joking, but anyway... It's Nvidia, AMD and Intel who are holding us back, otherwise they wouldn't have something new to sell each year.
