Questions for experienced Salvagers.

  • regular degraded emissions T3
  • hostage missions
  • wanted traders in boom.

the rest i'm missing as you do :)
Thank you 🙂
I don't understand the first two points:
  • What is T3?
  • For hostage missions, are the items in the cargo with the hostages? I never did these missions.
And for the wanted traders, they will suffer tonight 😎.

t3= threat level 3.

and yes, it can be a commodity along with hostages. i guess it has the same droptable as rares for that case.

So while i was looking for a station that has hostage missions, it leads me to a system in civil unrest.
With my corvette, it's hard to land on a M-Pad, so while i was transfering my FC, i went to a "piracy act detected, threat 6" to kick some a**es :p .
When i dropped from SC, i miracle happend: Experimental Chemicals EVERYWHERE 😍🤩 .
I took them, a conda attacked me and while my shields resistances are so high, i didn't take care of him (cargo first).
When i got all cargo, i was looking for the conda but he ... waked :ROFLMAO:
I got a bounty too, don't know why.
I assume this system state will stand until thursday, so if you want some the system name is Tarup.
Note that even if there are a lot of ships in the signal, a few of them will only scan your cargo. Just take strong shields and get the cargo, then jump off and come back again.
The salvages dropped in this signals are so far:
  • Experimental Chemicals (NOT marked as stolen, Illegal in jurisdiction)
  • Occupied Escape Pods (legal)
  • Damaged Escape Pods (legal)
  • Encrypted Data Storage (marked as stolen)
  • Wreckage Components (legal)

A fun method for planetary salvage.

Get a nice fast ship like a Cobra3, stick a limpet controller on your ship and head down to a planet.

Deploy your limpet and lock onto it in contacts. Now go for a nice zoom around, at some point (usually pretty fast) your limpet will lock on to a point of interest and head off to try and pick up a canister, follow it!
The limpet will usually die trying to claim its target but not before leading you straight to the goods, now you can drop anchor nice and close and load up your ship with the SRV.

I've been meaning to try plopping out a mine to see if it will dispatch any skimmers without destroying the cargo...hmm

Never tried that, will give it a go later - awesome if it works! - EDIT - it does work, fantastic stuff. Found a surface site within seconds, I would've just sped past normally without even knowing it's there. Great tip (y)

In other salvage news, I just cleared out an entire Thargoid base, twice (dropped 16t of stuff at my FC nearby and fitted a second 16t corrosive resistant cargo rack):)

Nice! I love treasure hunting...

Wondering if a pair of little turrets would work to clear out the skimmers before landing... 😉

Turns out that dropping a shock mine is the best way of taking out all the skimmers before landing.
Enough damage to kill the skimmers, not enough damage to destroy the cargo below. Doesn’t seem to scatter the cargo either...

Interesting, I have one of those fitted on one of my trading ships. May as well give it a try although I do usually enjoy taking the skimmers out with the SRV. But always open to doing things differently:)

Inspired by this thread, I tried to pirate those courier vessels (usually a T9 accompanied by a couple of Condas).

The way this goes is, I switch to silent running, keep about 2km distance, fire the hatch breaker, that gets shot down by their PD - eventually, they locate me (despite me keeping my distance, and popping heat sinks) and I have to leg it.

Am I missing a trick here? Using a Krait Phantom that, admittedly, isn't specifically engineered for cool running. The problem really is I can't even get near the cargo, and the opposing firepower is way too high (since my ship is filled with limpets, sensors and cargo racks there's not much room to make it more survivable).

I dont use silent running, just all pips to shields and engines. I get really close to the cargo hatch and hatchbreak it. Then I just tank the incoming fire while I manually scoop 1 or 2 items before I leg it to the nearest interstellar factors. Repair, then repeat until I've collected all the salvage item types I wanted.

Think of it more as a random Purse snatching, than a complex bank vault robbery.

you need to overpower the pd by the amount of hatchbreaker limpets you fire parallely. me stealing DBE has two 3A, so that's 6 limpets.
also positioning to the cargo hatch plays a role (shortest way - belly to belly)- and the positioning of point defense on the target. but the general trick is to fire enough limpets parallely that PD can't take them down.

Thanks everyone for the tips, will need to revise my build and approach.

At least now I know why the need for the bigger hatch breaker modules, since firing one when one is already active on the target doesn't do much. Makes sense.

Is there a tactic for getting past the protection vessels (usually those 2 condas which both sport PD also)? Or same approach and just spam hatch breakers in the hope one gets through?

the joy of stealth is you are flying between the convoy ships, and stay out of autoresolve distance of all.

ideal positioning is belly to belly with the transport directly "below" you (shortest straight line between your limpet dropping point and cargo hatch, matching speed.

the convoy ships are then flying around you parallely.

if you want to test it before going for the real thing, take an anarchy system in boom and practice at some convoy uss.

Ahhh - so their radar works the same as for players in that they actually have to have me in their field of view? I at one stage floated about 2km below them in FA Off so maybe the ships behind me got me within their radar "cone", could that have been it? Though I was still at least 1-2km away, would the hatch breaker given my position away?

Still have to learn a lot about how stealth works in Elite - one area I largely ignored so far.

Na'Qans old 101 on stealth is still golden (also the pvp channel i have watched most ...), and works for both NPC and players:

That's a very good video - educational and no fluff, cheers for posting that.

In other news, I had another go at a convoy dispersal USS (risk 2) - all I did was install a second hatch breaker controller (so two 3A modules i.e. 6 limpets in total), I switched on silent running, popped a heat sink now and then, stuck about 2.5-3km behind the convoy, and managed to grab all the cargo easy-peasy (including some Antiquities). Going to try this with a risk 4 USS now.... this is fun!

I was about 7km away scooping up the final containers, when I decided to cancel silent running - they came after me immediately, good to know how this works now.
