Questions for tomorrow's live stream

Apparently it is once a week (well, the two ferries each travel from one system to the other once a week).

So, yeah, I’d like to ask why they thought this was even worth bothering with.

If they are stuck to this once a week business because it can only happen when the server ticks over (Thargsday), then maybe they should think about having a ‘tick’ more often?

People seem to like groaning about the "huge" distance, so why not.

They could - but if they did it daily they'd get seven times the "why wasn't I warned about these regular Thursday downtime" complaints from the Pacific timezones. And if they did it hourly to make the ferries move at a more interesting pace we'd permanently be logging back in while playing.

What they need to do is find a way to move a dockable asset, with player ships aboard, without needing a server restart. And they know they need to do that, because it's a prerequisite for giving us Fleet Carriers, but they've clearly not solved it yet. I can think of several "what ifs" that make it a difficult problem without knowing anything about the details, so there's probably a bunch more as well - I suspect this may be why Fleet Carriers weren't in 3.3, because the plan they had to deal with this had some sort of unexpected problem.

Can I just say that I quite enjoyed the Gnosis event. I did miss out on the galnet news and No Fire zone problems
The only reason they are hoping to attract everyone on board the bus is because ..............
remember the Gnosis

So my question would be
Is this heading for another Gnosis incident?
, but I'm not sure Will would wish to reveal that at this early stage 🙂

Can I just say that I quite enjoyed the Gnosis event. I did miss out on the Galnet news and No Fire zone problems but the defending the Mega ship against scout attack was quite fun and had a nice Battlestar Galactica feel to it.

So bring it on.

It’s a shame they didn’t seem to think about stuff like this before making the game. Painted themselves into a bit of a corner, it seems.

Gotta say, I can't help thinking that creating such a big new thing for such a trivial purpose is simply a pretext for something "bigger" happening.

Course, maybe I'm just being optimistic. 🤨

The problem with this request is that its a chicken / egg situation brought about from prior experiences when FD have had 'issues' running similar things.

I could give FD a pass on this one and see what content and direction it takes because this is a new direction, but I have a nagging voice in my head now that won't stop.

Maybe this Interstellar Initiative will not succeed at all because pirates might capture all the necessary supply deliveries for Zende Partners. Pirates will build theire own base then. This might well be an unexpected outcome of the unfolding story of this initiative...

maybe.

I want this to start happening:

Its about time the Guardian AI did something.

Well, the original design had an offline mode, and assets like this would require a client patch to update. (And that remained the case for space-based assets until 2.3 was released)

Sure, if they hadn't originally planned an offline mode, they might well have handled asset positioning very differently. And if they'd had an initial design that wasn't (hailed by the pre-order players at the time as great, still looked back on as a mystical "game we never got" by some) which was basically FFE+multiplayer+BGS, then the need to handle live moves of stations might have come up at some much earlier point in the process.

But at that point you're basically into "if this was a completely different game it might be easier to do that", which is true, I guess.

...

Of course, it's not just where the game thinks the megaship is that's the problem. Adjusting the server code so that for certain asset classes the position is checked regularly, not just on entry into the system, is probably not the hard bit.

Questions like:
- what happens if you're logged in on the ship when it jumps (what do you see?)
- does it matter if you're in the hangar or not?
- what happens if you hit Launch and your ship starts the launch sequence with the landing pad two seconds before the scheduled jump time?
- what happens if you're multicrewed into a ship which does this?
- what happens if you're in the instance with the ship, but not docked?
- what happens if you're in supercruise heading for the ship's instance when it jumps?
- what happens if you're in supercruise in the arrival system?
- what happens if you're in the appropriate bit of real space in the arrival system (having waited since its last departure, perhaps?)
- what happens if you're exactly where it wants to arrive in that scenario?
- what happens if multiple people are docked to the ship, with computers of different setups and therefore different "load new system" delays?
- ... across several instances with a bunch of wings and friends and blocks to make it tougher?
- if the ship has outfitting or shipyard, what happens if you call a module to it, which won't arrive until after it's moved? What happens if you try to call a module from it but it moves between you opening the transfer screen and putting the request in?
- how does legal jurisdiction for the ship work? Does it change if it moves systems? Is this exploitable?

An appropriate underlying design can certainly make it easier ... but these are all also going to be tough implementation problems to get working with only minor bugs. (Consider how buggy multicrew is - and certainly how it was in 2.3 - which has some parallel issues to that but mostly skips the harder ones)

While we're on the 'what I'd like' phase, rather than knowing what we're going to get...

I'd actually be happy as a pig in clover if the Thargoids were unleashed 'in system' rather than hidden within NHSS / AXCZ's, and I'm a poo combat pilot! We do have the 'yet to rear it's ugly head' Guardian AI mentioned in lore, we have Thargs hidden away in absolute safety - meaning the effect on Joe public CMDR's is zero - come on out of the closet and introduce yourselves to all players!

I'm sure it won't happen, but...

I'm guessing the ferry will be a bit more regular than weekly. Otherwise it's kinda pointless.

I'd personally love to sit at a "ferry park", and watch it jump in, unload, reload, and jump out again.

Either that, or the ferry is just a megaship with some good facilities so we can transfer ships and restock lost SRVs, and sell the goodies, that doesn't actually move.
But you can "ferry" your stuff between it and the bubble.

So basically a station.
Will already confirmed it will be weekly

How many people watch the livestream, seriously?

I've never seen one - or for that matter had any desire to - & tonight Liverpool are playing Barcelona in the UCL semi-final...or does the mere mention of football bring back terrible memories of incompetence & ridicule for the anaemic, uncoordinated dorks here?!:ROFLMAO:

LIV-BAR is today though, livestream is tomorrow 😆
Sometimes I watch them, and cringe seeing some of them fly...

I rarely watch it live. But I sometimes watch it later on. Depends if I can be bothered. Lol

I don't care about watching sports though, but I'm not anaemic, or uncoordinated.

I'm probably a dork though. :ROFLMAO:

I'd rather kick a football around myself than watch someone else do it. Don't get the appeal of that.
