Questions Regarding Video Capture

Hi all!

My first question comes with an assumption, which is that recording a video using the console's built-in capture feature takes CPU and memory bandwidth that would otherwise be available for the game. Is this true? If so, is it noticeable when recording video in ED? Are we talking reduced framerate, stutters, or other symptoms?

Second question relates to the first - do Xbox games output unencrypted video on the HDMI port, or do they use HDCP? My understanding is that HDCP is just for copyrighted movies. I ask because one can get a third-party HDMI capture device, and I believe they are quite a bit cheaper (and legal) if they only record non-HDCP signals.

Disclaimer - I'm a PS4 gamer, but I'm only interested in recording video of ED. I'm guessing your experiences on Xbox will somewhat mirror what we'll get (someday) on the Playstation.

I dont really notice any difference when recording gameclips or taking screenshots, you might get a brief stutter but i believe thats just the guide closing.

However i havent tried recording game clips from point A to point B since the snap feature was removed, i always record the last X amount of time.

The Xbox constantly records, the DVR function just allows you to save the last 5 minutes (or record the next 10).

Crusina Luachra will be able to answer your other question; their videos are 1080p via a capture card

I've livestreamed ED and other games from the Xbox, and experienced no reduced frame rates, and received no complaints from viewers. I've also livestreamed from PS4 with a capture card with the same results. On the PS4 you will need to disable HDCP so you can capture through HDMI. All this means is you'll have to re-enable it before you can play media through the Blu-Ray drive.

I know the PS4 dedicates a CPU core to the OS, which I assume handles the video recording code. So theoretically recording video won't style CPU cycles directly. What I don't know is how data is pulled from the frame buffer on the GPU. There may be some nice magic going on behind the scenes so this can happen in some side channel or something as not to chew into available bus bandwidth. Hmmm...

There are other advantages to the external recorder, which is higher resolution and more available storage. I haven't priced those units recently. I doubt I'll be the next ObsidianAnt, so I might just stick with console recording if it works.

If this is going to be your first time recording and uploading I would suggest straight from PS4. If you enjoy it, then look into a capture card. No you may not be the next obsidianant, but anyone streaming PS4 ED on release will get viewers lol

Thanks all,

Just for clarification, I won't be live-streaming because my upload bandwidth can't handle that. I'll be recording and uploading later. Are there restrictions, besides hard drive space, on length of video record via console? I'm curious both Xbox & PS4.
