Quick question, before buying a Rhino...

Looking at the ED Store, I see the description of the Standard and Stellar versions says it includes a "mining rig". Singular.
The description of the galactic version, however, says it includes "mining rigs". Plural.

So, what's going on there?
Is it just that the peasant-spec versions come equipped with a single mining rig and you need to buy more at a station, while the Galactic version comes pre-loaded with a full compliment (6?) of mining rigs?

I assume the peasant-Rhino isn't fundamentally limited to a single rig while the Galactic version is the only version that can deploy 6?

Also, while I'm at it, I gotta say that I'm getting a bit cheesed-off with what FDev are now doing with the Stellar/Galactic versions.
Used to be that the Stellar version had all the "practical" dress-up bits and the Galactic version had extra baubles (holograms, decals etc).

Now it seems like the Stellar version is just the Standard version with some zero-effort tat thrown in and if you want any of the nice bits you need to pay twice as much for the Galactic version.
Seems like an underhanded way of just doubling the price of the desirable version.
That's okay, though. I'll just save some money by buying the Standard version instead of the now-pointless Stellar version. (y)

I picked up the standard version from the ED web store a couple of hours ago.

Slightly confused to find Jaques Station still charging me credits for a large vehicle hangar (regardless of type). The wording on the store says 'Requires a Large Planetary Vehicle Hangar (not included), which is available for compatible ships at most outfitting locations for free with this bundle'.

Am I misunderstanding? I took 'most' to mean some stations may not stock them, as opposed to some stations may randomly still charge for them.

Yes, the worst is how the decent paints are being locked behind editions now. Locking them behind a ship kit was bad enough. In this case, excavation yellow is exclusive to stellar or galactic. They know people are going to want yellow on this thing, and probably not the vibrant one. So unfortunately Stellar does have a point if you like the paint.

All paints need to be standalone purchasable. Starting to resent buying bugman editions to access a single paintjob. Had to do the same with the Nomad.

I even kinda get the impression that yellow was intended to be the original default scheme rather than this cream and coral one, but at some point someone realised that the industrial yellow is going to prove much more desirable and so swapped them to get it on the other side of the premium wall.

Yup the concept art showed exactly that, the yellow. Then Burr's video dropped and my heart sank, realizing they'd changed the default to red and white. Sucks to see FD heading down this road.

Does feel like a bit of a squeeze.

I was spending pretty freely while faith was intact but this, or rather its potential place in a pattern, is giving me pause.

Last year really seemed a great year for Elite and generated, for me at least, a semblance of vision and direction. Now seems purely illusory.

Elite is strongest when it has vision and adheres to it, well apart from playing behind-the-scenes audience, market, demographic cat-herding/appeasement bingo. When it attempts to be something and lets its people find it, because those people are passionate; rather than becoming amorphous in hopes of finding any people, as those people are mercenary.

I'm going to need to see something strong regards non-token features or narrative to get out from under feeling like the MO has shifted to 'what can we get from who's left' of a time-spent invested captive audience, to say nothing of cash.

My cost is sunk, here's hoping we're not left feeling 'fallacy'.

Yeah same, we're seeing some very cynical practices here. I'm considering stopping buying any of this stuff and waiting for it to go free. It's not the cost, it's the cynicism on display, and I don't want to encourage that financially. Complaining on the forums definitely won't change FD's course as long as we're still paying for it.

That's definitely where we are right now. It's frustrating because FD could even be more successful with a model that wasn't so aggressive. NMS is earning more than Elite and it hasn't sold a single additional extra. Not saying FD should head down that road, but their current model is not retaining players. They do need to consider something because the new features and ships alone is not working. I'm missing the Thargoids like you wouldn't believe, and wondering what happened to their zombies and the Radicoida storyline/feature.

But that's how it is with whale harpooning, it's a desperate corporate measure, and it seems the lower the player count gets the worse it gets. Many such cases.

Sorry, realised I hadn't addressed this part of your question at all.

I'm just having my first potter around in the standard version, and it appears I have 12 mining rigs I can deploy, with a maximum of six active at any one time (I assume - there are only six indicator rings on the dash for active rigs, although so far the deposit hotspots I've found have been too small to fit more than a couple at a time without hitting the proximity limit and thus preventing me placing any additional ones within the hotspot, so I haven't been able to test putting more down). But yep, my HUD suggests I have 12 deployable in the standard version of the Rhino.

I'm guessing they remain functional indefinitely, unless you destroy them accidentally or otherwise. You can also synthesise them from the same RH menu as limpets, SRV fuel etc. I'd also imagine they might be purchasable as ammo restocks or similar at stations, but I haven't researched or tested that yet. EDIT: I can't see a screen that'll allow me to do that in a station, so maybe they restock on docking with your ship if you've destroyed any while on the surface? Not sure yet!

Worth noting, too, that you also seem to pick up a handful of assorted elements/raw mats when you do the material collection from the rigs, in addition to the actual commodity you're intentionally mining from the hotspot.

There is a yellow paint job in the Vibrant Paint Pack - 7000 ARX

Which kind of raises the question...

Is it just a coincidence that the vibrant paints were all reassembled into a "pack" for 7000 Arx, rather than being available individually for 1,600 Arx, just before a vehicle is released that's begging for a yellow paintjob?

I shall put my tinfoil hat away now.

I guess if they're replenished automatically, that's fine.
It might've been nice if they could be bought from a station's "Advanced Maintenance" tab.
It's always seemed a bit "clunky" that the only reason for that to exist was to buy limpets.
