I think 2nd round beta is a good option. And now that premium beta is watered down, a downgrading from + beta to beta may be a good way to go.

You are excessive. You do not see the fantastic work that Frontier has done so far ? All this has a cost. Time and money.
As I have alpha and standard (backer rewards) beta I may be in a unique position to comment? To get my backer awards I will have to give the insurance and early standard beta access to my son (auditing prohibits transferring) as I will be upgrading standard beta to premium beta during premium beta (partway through I assume). I want my commander name, decal etc.
My son could well benefit from the insurance as I imagine he'll die more? Who knows.
Anyway, I added the alpha instead of upgrading my backer account.

I would say you should even consider upgrading but I base that on ME and my perspective. It all depends on YOUR point of reference. YOU are the driver of your own bus. Have I kicked myself for not upgrading my backer account and just buying another for my son? Yes. But I'm not going to worry others with my own thang.

Don't let the griefing and trolling get to you. FD are doing a great job, and are actually inviting us civilians to have direct impact on the game itself.

Yep you are correct, IIRC the we assume that a percentage will be honest/dishonest (80/20 ??), and understand that a larger sample size helps even out the bumps created.

I think a much of the offense was caused by bad wording and/or judgement on the part of FD. I can see why FD might want to thank us alphas for all the work we've put in (probably tens of thousands of person hours of testing over all); however, I think it was a mistake to offer these rewards as incentives to people considering the upgrade.
The beta promise was to participate in the first round of beta, and premium betas WILL be doing just that, but I can see your point.
I would never recommend the alpha as good value for money to anyone; its is for supporting FD. If you feel strongly enough to remove your pledge then it's a shame, but I can respect that.

Nice sentiment, but sometimes those that wait ... they starve.
Back in the old days you saw a preview in a mag and waited for the release....Or the saying was it had gone Gold ( meaning the first golden cd had been burnt ) so release was only days away..
There was no " Be in the Alpha or Beta " so I can understand people paying a lot of money for the privilege and how annoying if you don't get what you expected after paying the money...
My Advice....Sit it out this time and wait....Stick to the old ways and just wait for the game in future ... so much less hassle

more 60/40 and you are not going to get a large enough sample to iron the bumps out.
but.... i am an alpha backer and i would say get the upgrade. someone is going to shout something about what about people who can't afford it or some such nonsense.... ho hum.

No they are not.
And use of English may be exactly the problem here. Are we using discount as a noun or a verb today? Is the first private beta test, an alpha test?
I am definitely not jealous. Couldn't care less what Alpha get, if only some would remove the holier-than-thou attitude.
I'm also not angry. I'm sometimes annoyed, frustrated, disappointed, even slightly puzzled about why FD do what they do. Angry isn't on the radar for me.
Beware, if you want to play the 2nd round beta as soon as it is released, you need to buy the first beta. Because the players of the first beta, will play the 2nb beta round before the other players of the beta 2
I'm sorry you feel this way because I think they do care - even just from a business perspective. I don't agree that they get it right and I think the insurance perk has been a mistake although I appreciate FDs attempt at thanking the Alphas (or trying to entice more Alpha testers).
I personally won't use the insurance discount (if possible) the same way I won't be starting in anything other than a Sidewinder and 100 credits. This is for my own sense of fantasy gratification. I've spent £200+ and I'll be the same as a player buying the game in a years time. Not a waste of money though because I want to make DB's dream come true. That's why I backed in KS in the first place.
I really doubt I'm alone in this sentiment.
I understand the negative feelings and I'm not going to try and persuade anyone they are right or wrong. My option is to do nothing that you weren't going to do prior to newsletter18. This game is going to be awesome and in a few months time we'll all know (and hopefully feel) better.
I'd hate for a backer to pull out now in a moment of anger/disappointment (or whatever emotion) and regret it in a year. Especially after being on the ED journey so long.
but who is to say they won't do the same thing to 2nd beta that has been done to premium? let the higher tier pledgers have it before those who just pledged to that level?
next stop is gamma, and again the same could happen - how far do you go?

If you are so massively bothered, upgrade to Alpha. In the larger picture, it's not that much money. Just stop demanding that Frontier has to accommodate your view on what is fair and how to do business.
