Railgun - Anyone Uses it?

Just wondering,

Who uses them, why and on which ship?

I tried them on a FDL, Python and Cobra and the lack of ammo made me throw them away quickly !

The lack of ammo does indeed make it lackluster for any PvE activity.

But an FDL with 4 of them can settle a score with a player's big ship quite fast.

I did tried them long time ago on Viper, but energy drain and ammo lack was why i abandoned it, because it was not good for bounty hunting. But for PvP it is good i think.

They're quite bad for pve due to the low ammo count, as you mentioned. They are, however, one of the best and most dangerous class 2 weapon systems for pvp.

It's primarily a PvP weapon, if you imagine 4 ships with 2 C2's each the spike damage within a few seconds is huge. If you were using it in PvE, yeah pretty pointless.

I never leave home without them. Sure the ammo's a factor but I do trading missions in my Cobra so I'm never far from having to dock and reload. Timing is everything but when you get behind the victim... er... when you manage to get behind the attacker (sounds better) they are devastating!

So, four railguns on the class 2 hardpoints, and you keep the huge one for whatever you want?
But what about the convergence of these four class 2 hardpoints? From the video I have seen, it seems that only the front class 2 hardpoints and the huge one converge...

The lower two hardpoints are slightly wider it's true, but it's still got almost perfect convergeance. You might have the odd hardpoint missing stuff like the DBE/DBS or viper, since they're generally quite thin, but you won't need many hits to drop those shields anyway.
The huge hardpoint is another matter.

Yeah I've been using rails on my PvP builds for a while now.

I use 3 on my FdL, 2 on the left C2 slots and one on the huge. This gives me tight convergence for the rails and leaves me with 2 fixed pulses on the right C2 slots also with tight convergence. The build is immune to chaff and fairly easy on the distributor but you of course have to manage the heat build up so heatsinks are necessary.

I've got a cobra fitted with rail guns because it's fun hanging round at busy nav points and getting the last shot in on an npc with them. It also freaks out commanders who think you look like easy prey then get a couple of rail gun rounds to the face.

High damage, high precision, low ammo count, but effective against any type of target and defense.
What else do you require to be persuaded to use them?

If there's anything Q3 has tought me, it's that railguns are awesomesauce

I have been using them for assassination missions on DBS small hard points, as it allows those to punch above their weight. They're quite useless against small agile targets because their long chargin times after you hit the trigger. A pre-charge module would be very handy. Also they run out of ammo pretty quickly, so they're only really useful if you're in an area of space with lots of inhabited systems where you can reload. If it would be possible to install a pre-charger and/or upgrade them with bigger ammo clips I would love them, now they're very situational. The low ammo count makes them unsuitable for bounty/voucher farming in RES/CZ's unfortunately.

Instant fire, no loading time, gimballed and highly accurate version, please.
Also, please implement a seeker version of the class 4 plasma accelerator.
;)
