Random death

Shouldn't the player journal tell you the reason for a trip to the insurance screen?

Yes it should. A couple nights ago I was sent to the rebuy screen while piloting a ship and still had no clue what happened.

Filled my Asp with Void Opals and headed out of the ring for a jump to another system to sell, and once I was out of gravity lock I went FA off to line up my ship as the jump timer went down, then boosted to get up to speed and boom! Had night vision on, didn't see anything I could have ran into, had full shields, and there were no other ships around me or signs on scanner. Having no clue what happened from the rebuy screen, I looked at logs and just found a line that said hull damage and a line that said died.

When I first got a Python I was running cargo missions and after I docked I stepped away from the game and returned to a rebuy screen. I didn't know about logs then and put in a ticket to find out what happened (must have hit launch instead of enter station, blown up for loitering), and mentioned to them then the rebuy screen should state the damage that killed you.

Shouldn't the player journal tell you the reason for a trip to the insurance screen? My Krait was shielded, not carrying any cargo or limpets, left it parked in my own private group.

Returned to a rebuy screen. Checked my logs and saw this..

Died? Yeah that was obvious, how did it happen? And why is there no comms log from a pirate etc?

Wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't for the fact that I had a fully trained crew member onboard that has been with me for a very long time. This is my first hull loss with a crew member for well over a year, and I wasn't even in combat.

Wondering if this is worth a bug report.

Comet would be my guess, if you were in space. Might explain why there is no reference to it in the log as well.

Was landed in an unpopulated system with no cargo in my hold. Comets are invisible, thay have a gravitational affect on ships in SC, that's as far as it goes for now.

Could be trumbles I guess..

Apologies, even though you did say *parked,* it was not clear to me that you were landed, or I would not have said what I did.

It was part joke, and part not - they are there, but invisible, this is known, but that doesn't mean it can't cause something similar to happen had you been just idling in space somewhere.

I too, am interested in how this turns out, please update us when you find out.

I'd bet it was a random RNGineer malfunction. That's what happens when you put your faith in those shams.

If you parked on a planet then it was a skimmer!

I lost a ship hovering 10m over the surface.

Perhaps, as you were planetside, the death of your ship could have been caused by the 30-second-freeze bug that is prevalent, known and awaiting patching.

Although the ship doesn't apparently move very much during the lock-ups, perhaps yours became lodged in the terrain, wore down the shield and ultimately killed it?

My 10 pence worth!

Interested to know the outcome, too (surely a bug report will have them reinstate ship for you? Dunno about crew tho!)

Sounds bizzare, but I thought of a possible reason. I was visiting geological sites for some materials, landed at night in one of those lava spout fields. Could it be possible my ship landed over a powerful inactive vent, the vent became active whilst I was away? Could also explain why there is no description in the log.

As far as aware water/lava vents are not able to damage ships, only SRV's.

That's a possibility. I did something similar yesterday. I was swapping back and forth between EDFX and GEMFX (trying to get HDR working in EDFX) and left my SRV parked near a vent. It wasn't active at the time but when I came back from getting a cup of coffee, I was at 180% heat.

A quick update. Support have been great as usual. A cause of death was given but it doesn't make too much sense.

So I had plenty of fuel in the tank, my canopy broke and life support engaged. Since I was in private group it had to be an NPC, yet there was no comms, or any log of combat (my shields going down, taking fire etc) no cargo in my hold... Wish I was recording that session.

Yeah this seems quite likely, I landed with night vision engaged, those vents where everywhere. Definitely could of landed on a vent that activated whilst I was parked, have seen vents become active plenty of times in the past.

Confirmed. I tested this out recently by landing on a vent. They do indeed impart heat to both Ships, Fighters and SRVs. Sit long enough and they will likely cook ya. Didn’t stay quite that long, but did get a heat warning.

Good to know, so I guess it was my fault in the end. 60MM they gave me everything back, wasn't worried about the money, and not sure about having a crew member back from the dead.

Btw, has anyone heard the new crew voices? I picked up a female pilot with a heavy southern US accent. I wan't a Japanese fighter pilot, my ships computer on the Krait speaks Russian. Enjoying all these new sound packs.

Yes I am but I live in France now! My birth town is Torino, I would have come to Milano if I was still there!
Enjoy the tour and the food and don't forget a gas mask when you go to Milano! :D
