I've ranked up myself to Elite twice and my fighter crew to elite three times. The fastest way is definitely the high RES. Maybe only 10% are elite, but the sheer number of kills per hour makes up for it.At dangerous, you've got a long way to go. If you check your combat statistics in the left status panel, you can count your ship kills. You need about 8000 for Elite and something like 150 hours from start, so that's an average of about 1 kill per minute. In CZs and Compromised nav beacons, you get about 30 kills an hour using a battleship. My 60 an hour in the high RES was using a Sidewinder, so you can probably get more in a battleship.

If you have access to engineers I'd suggest conflict zones. They're the only place you're guaranteed a constant target spam. Use thermal weapons for small targets and something vs power plants for the big ones. I prefer boost speed over firepower (obviously to an extent), making the FDL my favoured ship.
