Re: Mercury Landing - Hunting Phosphorous

Landed on Mercury

Took the srv for a spin - absolute pain to drive.. I need practice..

Looking around nav panel.. oh what does dismiss ship do..

Oh it takes off and goes somewhere..oh poop.. how do I get it back.. the recall is in grey.. ah now it's not phew eeee

Get back to the station and dock for the night

Good night you "(-- Magnificent Beast --)"

I never did get the phosphorus I was looking for.. but I had fun landing, going for a spin, and trying to get my ship back.

My lasers did nothing on rocks.. just spattered dust..

I need to research how to find and blow up rocks to release their goodies.

Good night all

For surface prospecting, you need to expand scanner range by using the page up\page down keys on the keyboard.
then turn the volume up on the scanner in audio, in the options menu.
The scanner has a different sound for each type of surface deposit, which material % abundance can be determined by looking at that planets information on the system map. (
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OriKMdMnn_U
)
Target the material in combat mode, shoot the target drop the cargo hatch roll over the material, ( you can collect as many as you want, up to the capacity limit of that material, without transferring to the ship. - Unlike canisters of products which have a maximum cargo of 2 units, before returning to the ship to transfer. -
I try to combine several different actions during a planetary mission. - By landing 2.5 Km from the targeted outpost and surveying on the cruise to that target, - Collecting materials during each mission by mostly concentrating on those materials needed for synthisizing weapon reload, limpets reload, jumponium, etc.
Engineering a component takes a more targeted approach, by carefully choosing the landable planet\moon which has that desired product. - best choices are usually high metal locations ( usually 60\30 rock to metal content ) which are usually closer to a primary than ice world types.
The hardest to find I have discovered are Arsenic, Mercury, Polonium, and Selenium which are usually less than 5% on a planet or moon
Hope this helps clarify the how-to of surface prospecting.

It does. Thank you. I look forward to my gathering expo

Instead of roaming a planet aimlessly, look for a planet with geological sites.

Then land nearby, and drive around shooting needle crystals off the geysers.
They'll drop whatever G4 element is listed on the system map.
Then go trade a couple of those for a shed load of lower grades. 😁

For phosphorus, which is a G1 element, you should be looking for a planet with Technetium (G4). Then you'll get something like 28 Phosphorus for every 1 Technetium.

61 URSAE MAJORIS, Planet B 1, or Planet B 3 A both have Technetium, and geological sites.

And you can use the raw material trader at Bolg (15ly away) to trade the technetium for phosphorus.

I have never hit the [Dismiss Ship] does it really leave? Where does it go?

Where does it go?
Away.

Actually, I believe it goes into some manner of synchronous orbit above you, because a recall has it returning in all of a minute. The only catch that I've discovered so far, is that it doesn't always come back to the same place where you dismissed it from.

Now that you said that I remember hearing a ship take off once but I didn't think it was mine, but when I tried to find it I couldn't I had to Recall it- that explains that.

True, it'll land somewhere else- I've seen that.

If you should go in Open to some of the known sites, be aware that your ship can be easily destroyed while on surface and you can also be targeted in your SRV.

That being said, if you exercise some caution, you should be OK. I always dismiss my ship after clearing the landing site (you have to me a certain distance away for the ship to launch).

Generally avoid the SRV, but when I need a mat, spending a few hours collecting everything found will restore my supplies. That way, a return collection for mats won't be necessary for a while.

BTW, Phosphorus is pretty common so it's easy to find.

Couple of crashed Condas on Mercury. But they're in a perimeter though. You can rush in at one of those crash sites with your cargo scoop wide open and snatch some gold and palladium before you turn the skimmers hostile though. The other site is on bumpier ground and seems to have a larger, or buggier, invisible perimeter somehow.

Into the nether region of witchspace that's called the MAIN MENU probably.
Only hope that when you recall it, it's comes back in the same instance as you,....

It goes into orbit and waits for you to recall it... it's a scary sight I was sitting underneath the cutter trying to get back on board. This massive ship then kicks up and thunders upwards.. its cool

Thanks.. valuable info. I assumed you could just land and start shooting rocks

You can indeed go rock-hunting, but if the aim is to collect necessary materials without wasting a lot of time, geological or biological POIs are the places to go for abundant material recovery in far less time.
