Re: System Colonization .... Can we PLEASE name the system and stations?

Not a fan of leet speak, rude names working around the filter, etc.

But, at the end of the day, i'll accept it if it gives me the freedom to name my systems how i want. My immersion will survive it, and, at the end of the day, its not like i'm forced to go to those systems or pay them any attention.

As I said earlier, a "simple" solution for FD would be to implement a toggle, where only original names are displayed vs custom names, and a possible third option, display both.
I find your previous idea by puzzling together a name from a sanctioned list much better!
It is not only immersion (which bugs me the most) but also filtering of system names. Will be lovely when players start all the systems with underscores and tildes just to be top listed. And when I have the idea, others may have even 'better' ones. (emojis, etc.).

you can still come up with some decent names like that as well so long as the pool of possible names is large enough. I do totally understand where AA is coming from. i would love to name my system as well with names which are either sentimental or humerous to me so it isnt that i am claiming i am right, other people are wrong...

also it would be kind of an "elite" thing to so as that is kind of how systems were named in the very 1st game i think............ or was that the life forms? its been a while!.

In the first Elite game, it was a random name generator and there were no life forms - at least not on the BBC and C64 micro versions. Emphasizing it again: I am absolutely for those people who want to name their stations or even systems and planets after their loved ones (e.g. John Doe Outpost, Mad Mike's Folly, Jinx Orbital), historical persons (Motörhead Industries, Julius Cesar's Fortress) or choose 'in game' naming but as we all know there cannot be a good thing on this planet which won't be spoiled by a certain group of people who do it for the sake of it.

I've already seen some terrible station names
Terrible is subjective... Although the name for a station has to pass a check before being accepted.
You will hate ours then...

Do you have to pay twice when you misspell? :sneaky:
🤣🤣🤣
Since the ED universe is our future universe, then all sorts of memes or modern day references are lore friendly.

Or you think people in the future won't call spaceships the Millennium Falcon or even space stations Thunderbird 5?
Exactly... I really don't get the whole lore/immersion breaking attitude. I mean, it's what people do. Weird names like Slapout, Alabama exist because... People. The "lore" behind that name is amusing and it stuck.

Really people, you need to get over yourselves, odd or funny names is just a part of life.

There's probably a whole science on how places got their names, which I don't claim to know, but I like to believe that names that stuck around were simply passed on between generations more often. Because those places were more important.

So make star naming a function of accrued player visits. Reward interesting systems and their architects with the possibility to issue names - say, top 5 systems by traffic per month / quarter get to be renamed (if their architects are still around).

To be honest I haven't even tried colonisation yet because I see little reason in making another generic 1-outpost system. But if it were to be slightly competitive, I would probably give it a shot. The reward being nothing more that community fame.

I built my outpost, figured it'd be a one and done thing... Nope, I have 4 other orbital installations, 2 under construction and one planet side outpost with at least 2 more planned and then I'm going to build a large orbital and one large planet side port. I plan to build enough infrastructure to have everything I need to expand in one system... Piper's empire!
This is how things should be.

1. To colonize a system you should need a FC (compulsory)
2. You need to have at least 10 Billion credits.
3. You can name the star system and anything in it whatever the hell you want.
4. You can colonize any star system anywhere in the galaxy, further the better.
5. You need to hold the rank of "Elite" in a preferred field.
Sure glad you ain't in charge...
Something like Agony Aunt's Demise or Easy's Reach - commander name prefix, and select word list.
Yes, Piper's Folly would be a great name!
I can actually kind of live with Enterprise, seeing the US apparently have a real history of naming ships Enterprise. When I see ship names like Rocinante or Normandy, that kind of makes me cringe. But hey. I am sure some people cringe when they see my favorite Viper is called "Grill-O-Mat Snack Bar". In the end it's all just personal opinions. Don't mind the old man yelling at the kids in the backyard ;).
Hate to tell you, but their is a US cruiser, CG-60, named after Normandy, it is keeping in US tradition to name ships after historical battles to honor those who fought.

One alternative to the naming scheme could be for FDEV and the community to come up with some basic guidelines and the use Ai or volunteer moderators to approve them. The reality is if people ever populate the stars, they will name them whatever they fancy...

How about FDEV generate a selection of (appropriate) names and the player gets to select one?

Reasonable compromise?
Yeah... something along the lines of (but obviously not exactly the same, in terms of format/names) Helldivers 2's ship naming would work. That's pretty much how naming works across the galaxy so far?
