Re: System Colonization .... Can we PLEASE name the system and stations?

Dear friends, a simple example: the Spanish-speaking community has a funny example in this happy "coincidence"... a system called "Putas" (those who don't know its meaning in Spanish, look it up ;) ) whose dominant faction is "Space Bar Manolo". I can't imagine the mess that can be created with a system of free system naming. Hahaha.

I definitely don't think it's a good idea... we can't be trusted hahaha

There was also a restaurant chain called Chi-Chi's and I often wondered if that was a joke. In going off of the name? It should have been not to dissimilar from another chain, called Hooters.

Yes. A line has to be drawn somewhere, especially when childish gamers are involved. No offense.

Yes. I take BD-1234-XYZ-23 over System McSystemFace every time. And System McSystemFace would be the least of my worriers.

Ok, on that scale, you're fine with Leviathan then?

That's great.

Perhaps FD could implement some guidelines then and a reporting system for any offensive names. Although System McSystemFace isn't offensive... so i guess it would get a pass.

I think FD should do it, might get some really funny system names. I still giggle when i visit Big Harry's Monkey Hideout.

There are two easish solutions to naming.
1) Allow the game to RNG a name at a "property" broker, and you spend in game credits to roll the dice again if you don't like the name. Once you settle on the name, it's fixed. Similar to SLF pilot selection (hire and fire until you get what you like).
2) Have searchable tables for acceptable prefixes, mains and suffixes and choose from the available options. Use the current station, base, outpost names as the source for each. Commander's names could be included, since they are already approved by FDEV in game.

Something like Agony Aunt's Demise or Easy's Reach - commander name prefix, and select word list.

Sure. I mostly resent either forced funny edgelord meme stuff, or other popular SciFi franchises shoehorned in.

I know I am a bit of a hypocrite there, my ships are mostly named after Monty Python references, not exactly SciFi and, could be argued, immersion breaking too. But as I said, you have to draw a line somewhere. At leat I have a rather "normal" CMDR name instead of "funkybunny45387" or other obvious "gamer tags".

fdev should have made carriers destroyable but only for ones named Ishimura, Normandy, Rocinante or Enterprise.
I can actually kind of live with Enterprise, seeing the US apparently have a real history of naming ships Enterprise. When I see ship names like Rocinante or Normandy, that kind of makes me cringe. But hey. I am sure some people cringe when they see my favorite Viper is called "Grill-O-Mat Snack Bar". In the end it's all just personal opinions. Don't mind the old man yelling at the kids in the backyard ;).

So, you thnik humanity, going out to colonize new systems, would keep the NGC or whatever reference for the name of their system?
They would look up to the star(s) and say "Ah, its great to be an inhabitant of COL-SECTOR-!123-XYZ5"?

Or, do you think, they might come up with their own name for their system, maybe they would call it Pern, or Solasta, or Roshar, something else?

IRL, if I was sent to colonize a system far far away it would be named New Sol. And just to show I have some originality the planet being colonized would be named Planet Dirt.

Heh, appreciate the honesty there.

Thing is, about sci-fi references, in the future, people will name their ships/stations/etc (if they ever become a thing) after sci-fi stuff, you know its going to happen.

Where I live administrative centers merge and the silly politicians decide to combine the areas and rename it Johnsonville-North Duckersfield. And they simply redraw the map with the new boundary. Voila.

I am imagining future politicians merging star systems with political boundaries, renaming two systems into one called COL-SECTOR-!123-XYZ5 - PERIEDES-123!-YX5

What is wrong with name by things after former great ocean liners?

The issue with objecting to current sci-fi references as a naming source is the game is set in our future so those references could well be fairly common historical knowledge like Beowulf is now.

As for system mc system face I consider it insulting to my and the namer’s intelligence.

Whilst I agree with your point, I would like to point out sci-fi name are already used.

The first space shuttle (the one on the top of a jet) was called the Enterprise. It was not named after the navel vessel, it was named after the star trek ship after a letter writing campaign. So any future ships named after that space shuttle are using a sci-fi made up name.

perhaps .... but I suspect the star trek enterprise WAS named after the sea vessel so in a way it's all still linked to maritime heritage.
that said my beef isn't really with well constructed names even if it is stolen from other IP
it's just leet speak, rude names done that get around the filters and objectively stupid names (yes I know who am I to decree what is objectively bad but again.... AAAAAAAAAAA.... really? )
we as a community can't be trusted to make sensible names.

I possibly even include myself in that ;)

Not a fan of leet speak, rude names working around the filter, etc.

But, at the end of the day, i'll accept it if it gives me the freedom to name my systems how i want. My immersion will survive it, and, at the end of the day, its not like i'm forced to go to those systems or pay them any attention.

As I said earlier, a "simple" solution for FD would be to implement a toggle, where only original names are displayed vs custom names, and a possible third option, display both.
