Re: System Colonization .... Can we PLEASE name the system and stations?

I do like the idea of naming systems, along with planets and stations, but as others wrote, it'd be quickly exploited by ne'er-do-wells with names like, "bUtTChEek Central" or "EAtMeB@ll$" ... or other such juvenile nonsense. FDev would have to individually check each one for weirdness, and I don't think they have the manpower or willpower to do so.

Perhaps a vetting system using the forums, the proposer posts their name as a locked thread and it only gets passed to FDev for consideration if the number of like is the same as the number of views.

Or any ingame name generating system. I have seen a couple different types.
  • But only for systems with a minimum of 10 completed facilities.
  • AND maybe 5,000 ARX

Just to ensure name changes only happen to systems cmdrs care about.

Interesting suggestion.

That would limit it either to:

a) groups, where hopefully the combined maturity would win out over choosing puerile names

b) Individuals who have put a lot of effort in and hopefully are proud of their system and want to give it a good name

Combined maturity? Groups of people are even worse than just people. :)

Effort <> maturity :)

Your faith in people is quaint. :)

Elite Dangerous is the GOAT (imo) and clearly a lot of very hard work has gone into the development of Elite.
I'm ok with personal cmdr names. If one wants to name themselves cmdr mcshipface, knock yourself out, however, to name stations and systems with silly names, undermines, devalues and disrespects the game and it's developers.
Just no! imo.

I also like that we can filter carriers because with the exception of the wonderful DSSA carriers, they are mostly useless for anyone who is not the owner or in their group.

To emphasize it again: The universe which we play in is the Elite universe. Not the one far away and long ago or from other popular sci fi franchises. There's nothing wrong with a couple of the not so known names from these stories and it is probably unavoidable because lots of names have been borrowed from literature and history (e.g. 'Nostromo', 'Sulaco', 'Enterprise'.) but it just feels 'too much' and also pretty uninventive for me when I have to fly through a dozen systems which feel like I am in Pokemon or Star Trek.

I think that probably the least intrusive and an easy to develop solution would be that we players can display automatically generated names for stations and the official names of systems plus the owner names. Make a toggle to turn off the owner names. (I'd be curious how many players would turn them off ;))
I'd even pay ARX for that toggle!

Yep! I agree. I so wanted to name my system, but it hadn't occurred to me, until I started thinking about some of the more ridiculous carrier and Kickstarter named systems I have seen and imagine that applied to system names in general. I do NOT want to see football club system names, particularly for those I do not support, or some ridiculous name like Stapled Peacock Flesh (Kickstarter named) systems, in addition to the afore mentioned "other franchise" names lol

Originally? I wasn't going to colonize a Bubble system. I had no interest in the Bubble. Rather, I wanted to colonize a system out in Odin's Hold and name this very special system I had found after at least one of the realms of Asgard. I then decided I would colonize a Bubble system after all, as I had a really great idea for an imperial themed system that began as me misremembering the name "Chione" from the book Elite: Reclamation and it sounded perhaps even more empire than most things.

That said? I'm not too disheartened, as, so far? Colonizing hasn't exactly been what I had first imagined it to be. I thought it would be a lot more of a custom situation than a "select from a preset of these surface site types and place them no less than 100km apart..." scenario. I suppose I ignorantly saw us placing and fitting together modules/ habs/ buildings etc. And perhaps even growing those out to be full-on cities with time. Like being able to put an agricultural farm about 5-10KM away from the core settlement, which would have consisted of a basic settlement/ residence, with a technology site and industrial site on the outskirts. So, kind of like a small city/ town. So? Back I am to just focusing on the new powerplay system and Thargoid combat in general, in addition to getting my Elite combat and trade ranks back, as I haven't held an (original) triple Elite rank since the Xbox days. Specifically since the Robigo and Quince passenger run boom era, and Thargoid scout Elite combat rank farming days.

I agree with all you wrote above. When FDev talked about colonisation in December's FU, I already got the impression that we won't get much 'customizing' and the game loop is quite a cookie cutter approach. The next FU was really sobering when I realized that establishing a colony has zero personal benefit for my playstyle.
There may be a lot of players who pull satisfaction out of it but I wished for more personalization just like you described above and the 'reward' to have a personal building or at least a cabin, perhaps some storage space for mats and modules, icing on the cake: a display of my journeys and discovered lifeforms in the habitat or bar?

Instead, colonisation is a self-imposed trucking CG - I have more fun to fly an agile Mandalay to undiscovered systems and dance through ice rings :) Btw: that allows me to put my name on faaaar more systems and bodies in a short time (not that I care much about but it makes me proud).

Exactly! That was the other wish too; to be able to have a sort of home residence/ home system and a hangar. Though that was more of a "what if?" I knew well not to expect that lol That was just my mind drawing some next level inspiration from SC. In being able to walk around your ships in a hanger and having a home base. A "Bat Cave" if you will.

The update most certainly was a hauler's dream. I've liked the idea of hauling, but only where it pertains to buying/ trading. Elite doesn't have the best trading system, despite being a space trader. In SC you can go into these stock market looking rooms with all the displays and see what's selling for what, then go and get those medical supplies (for example) and sell them to a station where it's high in demand and make hundreds of thousands (even just tens of thousands goes a long way in that game). We don't have the in-game tools to observe (near) real time fluctuations like that. We have to go to Inara, which, more often than not? May be out of date on some of that info. Even then reselling/ buying and trading doesn't get you very far financially compared to some other game loops, like passenger runs, mining and combat.

Too true! On the topic of exploration. All of these settled systems being colonized have some other guy's name on them. Probably yours even lol
Keep stamping your name on them. Your systems may be colonized, eventually.

I finally completed my 4 truss coriolis station last night. i plan to make a large mining colony..... but was gutted to learn that Mad Mikes Glory Hole Mining is a black listed name.

i cant see why, its clearly a mining related name. :(

;)

Exactly. And people without respect are the reason why it must cost money since it needs extra human resources to weed out the edgelords and attention seekers whose only game is to make a nuisance of themselves. Ikr, it's a cutthroat galaxy.

So, the people who pledged large sums to the development of the game and got stations names like Big Harry's Monkey Hideout and the other funny names that were added disrespected the devs and the game?

I disagree.

perhaps i have double standards... but from a role play POV i see naming bases different to naming planets or systems.
if (in real life) I build a ship, or a house or a business I have a right to name those...... within certain constraints.
so i am fine with naming those in game... but regardless of the game saying "discovered by" clearly we are not discovering systems, they are already clearly all on the galaxy map already, therefore i do not think we should name actual systems or planets.

(but IF it were allowed............................ i would do it!)

I am fine with FD having certain rules regarding naming however and reserving the right to manually block a name after the fact if they need to......... even if it did mean i had to come up with a new name after the one i wanted wasnt allowed.

I have seen station names, i suspect from the kick starter founders, that are cute, or funny, or personal, I enjoy seeing those. I don't recall seeing any in bad taste. I may be wrong, but could kick starter founders name systems? I don't recall seeing any star system names that are of the user generated type.

In my opinion i am against it for two reason, the first is the obvious obnoxious type, the second is these are real systems in our neighborhood of the galaxy, I'd like to keep that. Astronomers helped fdev solve the problem of systems we can't see either from being to far away or occluded from dust. I think Fdev should be the only entity allowed to name or rename a star system.

If I was a trailblazer, and I'd like to someday, after the kinks have been worked out, It has absolutely no bearing at all to me what that system name is. I don't understand the strong desire to rename a system. And please don't try explain it to me, lol, I've read plenty of pages from the proponents, and it's all rather trivial to me.

As I recall, the highest level of pledge got to name what became Shinrarta Dezhra.

Here is the explanation behind the name: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/shinrarta-dezhra.7710/page-6#post-5622298

I think the way to make it work is firstly by using the naming filter used for stations and on top, provide a "Report this system name" button somewhere on the system's menu if someone names it something offensive.

FD could make it clear that anyone naming a system that requires action could be punished with a ban from the game. Hopefully that would put off the worst offenders.

What is seen as disrespectful or otherwise out of bounds is inevitably somewhat flexible, depending on the person who judges it, their mood, the time, context, or even money (as the case mentioned above). Equally inevitable is that some will push their luck whatever the given boundaries. So, whether you get away with your Big Hairy Monkeyballz Station may depend on luck of the day. Best to treat it as subject to negotiation, and you even get to interact with a human. I know you want to make them work for the ARX, don't you?

Today I learned of a certain content creator that at least got a warning on their account for naming a station after a certain orifice. Got very salty on reddit, too. So it's not like they do nothing, but hey; if it was up to me, they could be much harsher.
