Re The Salome Incident - Coroner's Enquiry

Coroner's Enquiry - Death of Salome.

A coronial enquiry has been commissioned to examine and report on the circumstances surrounding the death of Salome. Submissions from witnesses are invited. Persons involved in the organisation of the event concerning the escort for Salome or witnessed the events resulting in her death or participated in anyway are invited to come forward and be heard. The coroner has all powers of enquiry and has been independently appointed. The terms of reference for the Coroner are to enquire into and report on the:

- Persons responsible for the organisation and implementation of the event involving the escort of Salome.
- Reasons for the catastrophic failure of the strategy.
- Whether there was negligence.
- Whether there was a crime.
- The persons directly or indirectly responsible for the death of Salome.

AND make such recommendations based on the findings to bring the person or persons responsible to justice.

Submissions should be directed to this thread within 7 days.

Yes, more info plz. Make it official. FD speak.

I'm concerned that the investigative team you set up for this enquiry may not be impartial.

To prevent any abuses of power and misinformation, I suggest that almost all members of your investigative team are not allowed to speak at any point during the enquiry. You should also not allow any other concerned citizens' to speak up on pain of death. However, I can recommend one guy for your investigative team who you can totally trust. Great guy. He should be allowed to speak. Top guy. He's good at speaking. You're not going to trust somebody who's not good at speaking, are you?

Definitely negligence on behalf of the defence force in ordering defenders to go unarmed or risk being destroyed by their own side. Negligence in allowing known terrorists to infiltrate their organisation and allowed access to VIP.

Basically, PAC should be torn to shreds, because the leaders were a bunch of self important neck beards and they got their comeuppance.

Negligence...or collusion?

What body? Salomé was using tele-presence...

Yeah. Or micro-jumped out. You know - like commanders do when their ship goes "foom!". Even NPCs. Most people seem to have missed this - ship destruction does NOT kill the commander. Although I feel sorry for any other begger on the ship.

To be honest, though, who cares?

The whole thing has felt rather like a the bonus content on a not-very-good sci-fi DVD. I suspect today's events were just a way to draw it to a close and tie up a story that wasn't really going anywhere. Think of her as Poochie to Itchy and scratchy. And - like Poochie - she died on the way back to her home planet, and won't be returning to the series.

There are far, far, far more interesting and worthwhile stories developing around Pleiades and Maia. Things that do, actually, have a great baring on the story of the game.

Why the inquiry? Everything seems to be in order:

  • Lady Kahina Abandoned her duties and her people, after having many of them killed as a blood price for her own ambitions and pride
  • As Salome committed Treason against the Empire
  • Her Cult, the Children of Raxxla committed grave acts of Terrorism in her name to show how "Just and innocent" she was
  • Salome was found guilty by a court of Law presided by Her Imperial Highness
  • She was stripped of all titles and sentenced to life imprisonment
  • Salome escaped the prison transport
  • Proceeded to commit more crimes, including the theft of Meta Alloys
  • A Bounty was placed on her head by the Jurisdiction that tried her and found her guilty.
  • That bounty was collected

A Dangerous criminal's flight from the law ended

Justice served, in a very poetic way; traitor died at a traitors hand.

The thing I'm curious about is that, presumably, certain people had to be talking to the protagonists, here, in order to add them to friend-lists and ensure all the right people ended up in the same instance together?

Am I right in thinking the EDF were involved in this somehow?

The picture right now seems to be:

1. CoR were the only 'official' defence force. Three of their commanders were part of Salomé's wing. Not sure about the other three conspirators and what wingmates they had. (Edit: but I do know one of them gave PAC his position and heading from F Eridani, whereas at least the public livestream from PAC wasn't very clear about Salomé's position at any given time.)

2. Salomé had a friend list that predated this event, and Drew didn't want to clear it. Members of SDC were on it, as well as (probably?) legitimate members of the PAC. Anyone on the list obviously knew her position at every moment.

3. The SDC compromised the PAC leadership completely.

Given the detail of this, Salomé was a lot more vulnerable than most players had enough information to know. The entire time, hostile commanders had a direct position lock on her – and the only organisation maintaining 'wide net' security was itself compromised.

Edit 2: Key things I don't know, and would like to find out:

1. Did Salomé's 3-CMDR official wing treat SDC members as friend or foe, before the betrayal? Did they let them get any closer than they would've an unknown party? (known now: see my next post)

2. Who was the PAC leadership, and what's their story about how their organisation became so compromised and why they trusted the SDC?

3. How many commanders had Salomé's exact location throughout (friend or wingmate of a friend)? Were they generally armed or unarmed? Were they mostly friendly to Salomé? Did they follow Salomé closely, did they trust or distrust SDC members, and what's their perspective on the event?

Who's CoR? Children of Raxxla?

Who was it who was posting in this forum earlier on, making dire warnings against anybody showing up with armed ships?
Whoever that was, they seemed to be taking themselves ever so seriously.

Thing is, whoever was responsible for organising this, I don't think they really understand how badly they've harmed the reputation of their group.
They've either shown themselves to be complete suckers or they were happy to go along with being portrayed as total suckers.... which makes them total suckers in either case.

I just want to know who to laugh at the next time they make some pompous post about strategy, politics and conflict within the ED universe.
Cos, whoever it was, they're over. They have zero remaining credibility.
They might as well disband and find other groups to join.

I don't know the background, I just got interested in the last few hours.

I think CoR is the Children of Raxxla, and I think they're generally explorers and have been associated with Salomé for some time. The impression I get is they probably did everything right, but they were under-equipped for this kind of job. In particular, they were only able to field three commanders to defend Salomé as far as I can tell. Those are CMDR Eisen, CMDR Isaiah Evanson, and Zenith (not sure if that's CMDR Zenith in-game).

The ones posting in this forum were PAC. They made themselves the 'official' defence group, but they weren't in Salomé's wing and basically... weren't what they said they were. But they were the 'community effort', the group designed to give the larger community something to do. And they were compromised by SDC (Harry Potter et al, let's just call them psychopathic criminal scum, IC) at some point, right up to the leadership. SDC were part of PAC, ostensibly protecting Salomé, and PAC made the mistake of trusting them. CoR didn't, but they were under-equipped.

I don't know if PAC will continue to exist: SDC and CoR will. So for finding out who to laugh at we need to find out who made the decisions in PAC.

Here's Zenith's take:

YPart of spinning off PAC was so that the sheer number of people wanting to get involved could have a place to organise themselves.
CoR were never part of PAC. This was a deliberate choice on our part so we could concentrate on building up our faction's people and ships without having to constantly look over our shoulder or be limited in what we could or couldn't do.

When we heard SDC and CODE wanted to join PAC, we strengthened our internal security to the point where we were almost turtle. We never trusted them for a single second.

We practiced with PvP loadouts, we practiced making and evading interdictions, and we practiced jumping as a synchronised wing.
We clearly got good at the synch jumping, because our flight made it to the bubble, despite module malfunctions in Salomé's ship, instancing issues, and lots of folks trying to find her.

While all eyes were on Salomé, the other 3 flights got through to the destination. We've lost Salomé who is our faction's figurehead leader. The other 3
She has fallen, but Raan, Tsu and Yuri got the secret out.

A bit more info. Of the three CoR protectors, only one was actually able to come to Salomé's aid, as the other two had network/instancing issues at the time. At a guess, that's what HP was waiting for. It doesn't look like the fight itself was particularly epic (sorry to anyone involved if I'm wrong): Salomé's Clipper was already damaged, HP flew a Clipper with a fairly standard loadout except for FSD disruptor missiles, and I doubt it lasted long. HP had I think... two wingmates? Not sure if they ever got into the low wake instance. I think there was some early confusion because HP streamed the very end of the fight, and in the stream he left a wing after the fight. Got a lot of us thinking he was in a wing with the other protectors, but it seems he wasn't.

That's why I was asking about who was linked directly with the protagonists though.

I mean, this PAC bunch (whoever they might be) can make as much noise as they like, and team up with whoever they like, but unless they're in the same instance as the protagonists it's not going to have any effect on the outcome.

Can't really blame the SDC for doing what they do.
It's like putting a starving dog in charge of guarding a plate of sausages.
You don't blame the dog when the sausages get eaten. You blame whoever was daft enough to put the dog in that position.

Yeah, I understand. And the answer there is CoR, plus a possibly long and completely unsafe friend list.

Probably mostly true. I think that the outcome was mostly about HP being on Salomé's friend list, and CoR being under-equipped (three defenders wasn't enough given instancing problems). But PAC's mistakes probably had some impact.

If PAC had instead chosen to cluster around Salomé as best they could, and let anyone else do the same unless they actually tried to attack, then Salomé would've been very difficult to 'get to' due to massive instancing problems. And while an attack would've been more likely, it would've reliably turned into a very one-sided battle in her favour. They could've made "no interdictors" a more realistic version of "no weapons", perhaps. I would've honoured that one.

Oh, sure. For once their actions are actually perfectly easy to justify in-character. My only issue with griefers is it makes for a universe of bizarre unchoosy psychopathic mass murderers with no sense of personal safety... which is just jarring. In this case, they saw a bounty and went for it. That's fine, there should have been people doing that. In fact, when it comes to 'roleplaying', I'm more at fault than them. My character is pledged to Aisling Duval and is a bounty hunter: he should have been against Salomé, rather than mostly a bystander but tentatively for.
