So I've been following the "Detailed dk2 setup" thread, but can't get past step #4:
When go into E D and set the monitor to secondary, then select "Oculus Rift (headphones)" under 3D, a bunch of the parameters become red.

Not sure what this means, but in my experience, usually red=bad.
When i hit 'accept', it drops to desktop on the monitor and the rift goes dark, sits there for a few seconds, then the game comes back on my monitor, and the rift is displaying the desktop again.
The displays are set to extended mode, and in the amd control center it shows my monitor as desktop number 1, and the rift as #2. But if I open the windows display settings it shows the rift as #1, and the monitor as #2 (but the monitor is still set as primary display):

Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
What am I missing?? (something obvious, i'm sure)
I've got the rift config set to extended mode.4. When you launch Elite Dangerous especially the first time there is a good chance it will launch to your main screen without VR enabled so first thing set up your controls before you go into VR mode its much easier that way. Then go to graphic settings and make sure it's set to fullscreen, change the monitor to secondary, change 3D setting to Oculus Rift then you should see the resolution as 1920 x 1080, refresh rate 75Hz, vsync on, frame rate limit off and now hit apply and look in your rift you will need to confirm changes before the timer runs down.
