Renaming Systems and Naming Planets

It'd be cool if we would be able to rename systems to give the game some flavour. or to name planets to something like "Pandaria" or "Hoth" or whatever movie/game reference you want to make!

This is what I'd call my first system I could name.

There'd be and awful lot of references to male genitals. I imagine someone would claim an empty system with two stars in it just to name it "My Big Balls". Or claim a fast spinning Neutron Star / White Dwarf just to name it "Vibrator".

This freedom shouldn't exist. Not in this game, at least. Fleet Carriers are fine.

Edit: This is avoidable. Changed my mind in my next post.

There are a lot of people that Mommy didn't love enough that would go about the galaxy dumping T1 garbage so they could name it, Commander Sombody 1, Commander Sombobdy 2, Commander Somebody 3, etc.

This game doesn't need to give T1 garbage dumpers any more reasons to pollute the galaxy.

p.s. Full disclosure, I named a few items in my system after Raedawn so.....guilty.

People already complain about others "griefing" them by taking systems.

Just imagine how many salty tears would flow if someone took their planned system name, because only they would have thought of the name "Deep Space 9" or whatever.

Navigation nightmares ahead as systems across the galaxy have their names changed on the regular. Elite Dangerous would update but 3rd party tools like Inara would not do so and a lot of use it as our core item search since the in-game tools are trash-worthy.

It'd be a cool idea if and only if you magically were restricted from doing what you want – naming things after things in films or other games, or references to bodily functions, or whatever. It's bad enough I already have to fly by Menstruation Station to land at an outpost architected by CMDR BigBallz.

The obvious solution is that each individual player should be able to create a local (to your PC) name.

It’d work just like bookmarks. Select a system or station, and rename it. And only you see it. It could show up in a different color - that’s fine.

Missions are already created via a script that has a syntax like “deliver $tons $commodity to $station in $system” so it’d be a simple matter to have them use the local name.

Let FDev collect money (which funds development) to let players name their systems bigbalz. But let individual players rename the systems locally.

That's actually a good idea! Instead, make custom names a cosmetic change players can opt into.

Example idea of how it could work:
You choose to opt into it from the galaxy map settings. It gives some PEGI warning. When you confirm, you start seeing systems and stations with names players have given them. If more than one player decided on a system's name, the system takes the name which most players have chosen. If it's a tie, the one who did it first takes priority. When you click on a system to read more about it, it also shows a few contender names so people can "vote" which name to use.

I would expect Deciat to be mass-vote renamed into "FSD Engineer" and Shinrata Dezhra into "Home".

If it is customised by the commander, I would need to add a prefix, e.g. the commander's name, so that it can be filtered by the presence or absence of the prefix.

This would open up a huge field for cyberbullying. Bravo!
1) It's an opt-in. Don't feel comfortable? hide it.
2) If it comes to that, it can get screenshotted, reported and the offender banned.
3) How serious can it get? More serious than being a new player getting killed over and over trying to get to Felicity Farseer? Doubt it.
4) There's always an option to use the Ignore function on everyone you don't want to hear from.

Not a cat in hells chance existing lore systems will get renamed, i think we can move on.

Expecting the real names of the systems change now once we architect them is not realistic, and wouldn't be right. I'd rather have AUPIA SECTOR RGX PU-7 BA than... (put the most idiotic thing you might think of)

But what I'd like very much is an option for the player, just for him, on his computer/game, to rename his architected Systems, so he'll see MY FIRST METAL or I LOVE ROSES or whatever. Only the architect.

What we need is a star sytem DNS. The convoluted names are like numerical IP addresses. Humans can't remember them. So someone cleverer than me, FDev preferably, or one of the wonderful 3P tool providers, needs to host a name resolution service so 'I LOVE ROSES' get translated to SYNUEFE what-69-FU or whatever. Details to be worked out. Hint: an RFC exists. Disclaimer: this is just to make it easier to tell my grandchildren in my will which system has their namesake stations.

That's what I was suggesting in my May 15th's post. You can still browse the galaxy with the "DNS off".
