Newcomer / Intro Report in - how you getting on!

Hi all,

So I have played for 7 hours on and off today after starting off in LHS 3447, only one death so far (lol - boosting in a station!) but have had a blast, not one shot fired and only one interdiction to deal with!
Found my freagle and managed to make just under 100k, looking forwards to getting in a cobra.
I have to say - its been the best gaming experience I have had in many many years.

So how are you finding your feet - enjoying the views and new experiences - let us know!

I also started at LHS 3447, haven't done much yet, one bulletin board courier mission for 4.5k CR and a bit of sightseeing, but my last docking was at the station with my Eagle, so I may take that out for a spin tomorrow.

Docking etc I've found is really pretty easy so long as you don't do anything silly.

Hiya....I also started at LHS3447 (seeing a trend here), after numerous goes on the launching, docking and hyperspacing tutorials all went pretty smooth...absolutely loving it....not rushing the experience just shooting the breeze and enjoying the view.
My only concern is that my laptop appears to be melting so I sense an imminent purchase of a gaming PC to take the strain!

Yep another LH3447 native here.

I've played for about 3 hours, not upgraded my sidey yet, or used the eagle, or tried any combat. Just done a new trading runs and courier missions and got up to just under 10k. I died once as a result of a mess up in Serebrov, and got shot by the station for trespassing.

I did get interdicted once but when I dropped out of FSD there was nobody there... Go figure.

Probably not the answer you're looking for but dude hit the tutorials for an hour or so...will save you a lot of pain I promise you...I was dreading my first docking etc but after doing them 3 or 4 times things come together!

For docking, ask for docking permission for starters (I sometimes still forget to ask) then find the side with the opening, line up and make your approach slowly, when you get close to the entrance roll the ship to keep the letterbox as straight as possible and make your way through, once inside find your docking pad, orient yourself to it and make your way to it, remembering to decrease your speed as you get close, lower your landing gear and thrust down onto your pad. There will be a neat targeting display to help you once you are close enough, just get your ship centred over the middle ( you will know when you are within docking parameters as it will turn blue) just remember to descend slowly and correct yourself. . It does get a lot easier the more you dock believe me, it will become second nature and you will eventually be able to whack yourself onto your pad while still in forward motion, just takes practice. Lexrax, sorry to here your woes with docking - hit me up online (Easy Target) and I'll help you with some basics Inc. docking - I'm in and out LHS 3447 for the next day or so until I go far out.

Interesting name... Hostile cmdrs will either take it at face value or worry it's a bluff, or a double bluff... Interesting.

Press button "1" on key pad then "e" or "q" to change tabs, then select target that is the station using navigation keys "a,s,d,w", press "spacebar" then request docking permission. the don't forget to lower landing gear (im not sure the preset key for this as I have set to "L" for landing!

HI All,

I pre-ordered the merc edition a few weeks ago, and I've been waiting for this game ever since my old specky 48K died. Frontier kept me going, but it's great to be back in the universe again.

I loaded up ED last night, and have mainly been in and around the LHS 3447 system; pulling cargo in the sidewinder and doing the occasional mission. Docking was a breeze thanks to a little time spent on the training missions; and a few keyboard bindings. Still playing with a keyboard/mouse set up until I get my hands on a flight stick.

I've not taken the eagle out yet; with it's lower cargo cap, there seems little point at the moment; and it would be nice to have more than the 4 cargo slots in the sidewinder. At the current rate, it's going to take a while till I can afford a better ship, or the expandable cargo that the originals had.

I've had a couple of prangs in the ship, mainly exiting stations at the same time someone else is trying to enter, but it;s a whole load of fun so far, and I've not managed to kill myself yet.

I can't wait to get back on later.

Most of my current income seems to be from Cartography (best haul just over 11K) Still in my starter sidewinder but have done a few upgrades to get additional range, looking good so far.

Hello fellow commanders

Played for a bit so far and loving every minute, started in LHS 3447, Did take me a while to map my HOTAS joystick correctly, but the tutorials were a great help and did have to do a few restarts to end up with a friend in the same system, but i guess thats par of the course.

Anyway done a few cargo hauling missions in my sidewinder, as still not a fully competent pilot so i haven't risked the free eagle just yet.

Survived 5 interdictions, not sure if they were from other CMDRs or npcs, still fun trying to evade.]

Caused one accident with another CMDR or npc in Dalton Gateway Dock Entrance, that ended in lasers and explosions for the other guy

Seen two larger ships exploded in dock due to docking problems, oh and tried doing bounties with a mate, and that seemed to work out rather well, each getting some credits for the kill.

So far only made 32k but great fun either way, now off to see how mining works.

All in all this is the best fun i've had in a while with space games.

Haven't made it past the tutorials yet as I'm still fighting every available control method to try to find one that my ancient brain and huge hands can cope with.

I think I've spent around 10 hours in the tutorials so far, just flying around, shooting stuff and then changing the config/controller

Dont let it frustrate you, docking and the flight mechanic are among the more difficult aspects of the game AT FIRST Once you get the hang of it (well come to think of it youll still bump into things on occasion, I still do ) all will be good and ull appreciate the dynamic of it..and FYI once u get a couple xtra bucks get a docking computer, their cheap, tho I suggest manual for experience sake..never know wen that docking computers gonna get fried!

Tried doing some exploring missions and then came out of hyperspace and started to burn up and then crashed into planet Theirs a lot to learn :| Where do i buy the docking computer from and whats the cost ?

Still humping along doing the same old stuff, I dont seem to be having the issues with do king that some players do. I would say I am having issues with navigating, I just cant seem to get my bearings and the deluge of data available is a bit of an overload.

I decided to get a joystick after flying a little with mouse and keyboard last night... m&k sucks big time... no fun, bought that 30 $ logitech one everyon recommends - it works great. I played for about 7 hours today after work until about midnight... made about 35k but i spent it all on nonsense and then crashed my ship and had to spend another 1000 to rebuy my ship i just upgraded x)

I helped kill a big adder ship... i don't like killing ships though right now because I bought the minigun which is just too hard to hit things and it has ammo... and i bought the torpedo launcher but i think it has some crazy ammo costs, it says 15k to reload my guns at the station at the moment

i'm also equip a fuel scoop and took off my shields... bad idea now i don't know if i want to explore and make money doing carto, or start doing trade runs to make some money back so i can buy better shields... ahh options are endless

but combat is hard - not because flying is hard, but because the guns take such an insane amount of time to kill anyone it's almost not worth my time to stand around a nav beacon waiting for a wanted person that is /hopefully/ weak enough for me to take on, and cost effective, sicne ammo is so expensive

I was at some big station dock that had outfitting - you can check on the system map if a dock has outfitting, if it doesn't , find one that does - and they were selling a docking computer for 4k credits... pretty cheap, that's like 2 trade runs or if you can manage to bring down a ship for a bounty, the cheapest ship i've brought down awarded 8k. I don't know how well the dock computer works though, i haven't had a problem with it like everyone else

My very first reaction was this:

"Oh, physics apparently matter quite a lot here, unlike the fighters I used to fly in Descent. Well, good. More realistic.
Ok, now.. hm.. how do I.. what the- how do I request docking permission?"

I should add that the sole reason I bought Elite : Dangerous is because it was touted as a top-notch VR game for the Oculus Rift. Well, from what I can tell, E : D is very keyboard-focused. How many keys in the UI? 85? Yeah, that's a lot. Peeking out from the headset to find keys is tiresome. I guess I'll have to get the stick & thruster to play in VR.
