Reptile Representation

Yeah i know. Just wanted to mention my optinion on the matter when exhibits came up.
The habitat reptiles i wanna see are
-Argentine B&W tegu
-a smaller tortoise like red footed or radiated tortoises
-a true medium size crocodilian of some sort to brigde the cap between the tiny and rather small dwarf and spectacled caiman and the hulking brutes

While i could live without them, i know the community heavily request:
-an african croc
-australian monitor
-sulcata tortoise
Just wanted to put mt list out here too
Essential
  • an austrlian monitor (one of these are needed to make a realistic zoo for me)
  • Argentinian tegu (patagonia, aboreal lizard)
  • African Slender snouted croc (it fills the niche of an African and a medium sized croc)
  • pig nosed turtle (endangered and a great new guinea rep)

Others I'd like
  • small Tortoise like Radiated or leopard
  • African Spurred Tortoise
  • arrau River Turtle
  • crocodile monitor
  • Chinese alligator

I think overall we got a pretty good reptile roster. Still some of them could be nice additions!

Crocodilians;
-Nile crocodile(Anniversary?)
-American crocodile(Anniversary?)
-west african slender-snouted crocodile(Anniversary?/Rainforest animal pack)

Tortoises/Turtles/Terrapins
-African spurred tortoise(Desert animal pack?)
-Green Sea turtle/Hawksbill sea turtle(Coastal animal pack?)
-Alligator snapping turtle
-Matamata
-Red-eared slider

Snakes
-King cobra(Forest animal pack?)
-Reticulated python(Rainforest animal pack?)
-Green tree boa(Rainforest animal pack?)
-Coral snake(Forest animal pack?)

Lizards
-Perentie(Desert animal pack?)
-Bearded dragon(Desert animal pack?)
-Thorny devil(Desert animal pack?)
-Tuatara(Islands pack)
-Panther chameleon(Rainforest animal pack?/Islands pack?)
-Tokeh(Rainforest animal pack?/Islands pack?)
-Giant leaf tailed gecko(Rainforest animal pack?/Islands pack?)
-Green basilisk(Rainforest animal pack?)

In the habitat animals section, our needs are very clear and limited:
  1. African crocodile
  2. Australian monitor
  3. African spurred tortoise
  4. Large freshwater turtle
In terms of exhibit animals, we need a dedicated exhibit pack to get even close.
Though I definitely agree that there is still need for more habitat reptiles in PZ, things aren’t as “clear” as the list you provided. In most AZA-accredited zoos, there are at least two or three medium sized tortoise species (none of which are currently in PZ). Not only are they large enough in size, but often many of these tortoise species are kept in non-enclosed or even open-air, mixed species habitats. Meaning that numerous tortoise species could easily and realistically function as habitat options in PZ.

And as far as unfilled niches go for habitat reptiles, it’s hard to define what would align as “bare minimum” categories. Yes, we don’t have an African crocodilian. But we also don’t have any New World, Asian, or Australian large terrestrial lizards. Does this mean we “need” a habitat lizard from each of these regions?
And we don’t have any continental-based habitat tortoises or turtles, what’s to be done about this?

I totally agree that we need more habitat reptiles, but it’s hard to define what areas are clearly needed the most of all. It quickly becomes more a matter of opinion.

And it becomes even more-so opinion-based when we all start to debate what species Frontier should put in an exhibit box and what would exist as fully-functioning habitat species. Because in truth, the line between these two options is pretty unclear. We can now tell from Frontier’s previous decisions that an animal’s size and how its held in real-world zoos isn’t always what guides them on their final decisions for the “exhibit vs. habitat” devisions.

I agree fully with everything you say here. Just wanted to mention we do technically have a Asian lizard in the komodo dragon.

Otherwise though, I think what's important depends on preference. Like I'd love a habitat lizard for every continent. Preferably 2 oceanian ones if I wanna make any realistic ausyrlian zoo. It all depends on your own perspective.

So today we got confirmation on getting the Asian water monitor.
Idk how popular of a pick it was to a lot of you but posters are giving mostly negative feedback
I wanted a non crocodilian reptile, I will take it and I’m sure I will like it and look forward to adding it to my reptile zoo.

I like it a lot in its own right. I just don't like the fact that it makes an Australian monitor less likely. I've litterally only been one zoo without a Lace monitor before so now they've become my favorite animal. Otherwise the deep diving sounds awesome.

With the inclusion of the new monitor my top candidate as an australian monitor actually change from the perentie to sand goanas. I think a more medium sized lizard would be adding more to the game than a 4th hulking beast of a monitor.

I'm still in the Lace monitor boat. It's not sand goanna size but defintley smaller than perenties. I mainly want them cause their aboreal though. I need a climbing monitor rig you know.

Imagine the asian water monitor was the crocodile monitor instead.
I dont mind it but that way not only would we have gotten something for oceania and the apex predator of new guinea, but also a climbing monitor.
But hey aslong as the nile gets diving aswell im fine with it, eventhough climbing feels much more desireable then diving to me

I don't think we need another monitor now when other species are still so neglected

That said I would love to see a lace monitor as a habitat animal. I want it to be walkthrough friendly. I have seen a lot in the wild, they're very curious, I have yet to meet an aggressive individual, and they will absolutely come up to you and inspect you and your campsite.

I dont think thats gonna happen :D

Asian Water Monitors climb too, so they'll hopefully also give them that Ability in the Game. A less likely Thing I'd like to see would be a Update that makes it possible for juvenile Komodo Dragons to climb

I don't mind a 4th monitor, but I doubt we'll get one and also I'd prefer a 3rd tortoise for reptile rep. Then I'd be satisfied.

For other reptiles, I'd want snakes and smaller/smallish lizards, and smaller turtles/tortoises, but my list is too long to complete (realistically, I mean)
  • Snakes
    • Copperhead
    • Green anaconda
    • King cobra
  • Lizards
    • Frilled lizard
    • Thorny devil
    • Plumed basilisk lizard
    • Panther chameleon
    • Jackson's chameleon
    • Veiled chameleon
  • Turtles
    • Alligator snapping turtle
    • Box turtle

This list is almost exactly my list, but throw in some geckos, the mata mata turtle, red eared slider, gaboon viper, and corn snake
