Reputation

Depends which sort of reputation you mean.

Forum reputation: not a lot - it's a quick way to let someone know you in some unspecified way liked their post(s) without writing a reply to the whole thread.

In-game faction reputation: higher reputation gives you access to more and better-paying missions in general. Security ships will very rarely scan an Allied commander; stations will refuse docking to Hostile commanders. A few factions guard system access permits and will only hand them out if you're Allied; a few factions have engineer invitations they'll only give to suitably reputable people.

I have played the game for ages, so know the second part, but thank you for the first part, even if it is nothing much.

So a quick run-down:

Your title (harmless, mostly harmeless, dangerous, elite etc) is related to post count. I can't remember the exact figures but go to "community" -> "member list" -> "arrange by number of posts" and flick through until the ranks change.

The green/red/grey dots are related to rep:

See someone with a high post count and a small number of green dots is an indication that they may:
Post incorrect information
Not contribute to the subject at hand
Make low quality posts
Make posts with views that are not generally agreed upon

The opposite is also true, if someone has a huge number of green dots and a lower post count then in general:
They post useful things
They post original content
They generally post in line with other peoples views
Or they are funny

Rep isn't everything but rep vs post-count is a decent measure of the person posting and their contributions (or lack of) to the forums. Obviously this system isn't flawless, could be gamed if a group of people are desperate for internet points but in general it works ok.

Here is the link to the ranks that have been mentioned before. It's based on the old Elite kill chart, but instead of kills it's posts:

Sometimes I want to open up the route of negative rep again... where too much negative rep would fling you out into the black of space. :p

Here's the full rep listing...

Do note that negative rep can only be given out by very few folks (admins (me)) currently. Generally I give out negative rep to the mods when they try to pull some shenanigans over me! [big grin]

Post count values have yet to change, and probably won't change anytime soon. Have considered new titles past 6k posts though!

Oh thanks, I had always wondered how the hover descriptions actually worked.

There was a similar thread a while back and in it we touched on ways to farm forum ranks and rep.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-forum-ranks-determined?p=5501738#post5501738

Although in game I'm unable to countenance mode switching or exploits, in the forums I'm usually to be found adding a pointless or silly comment to someone else's thread simply to advance my post count. If people happen to like them and donate any shiny green things they may have spare then who am I to refuse them?

Also, anyone know why some of the precious green things are dark green while others are light green?
