Retribution Laser

So, is it broken?

The reason I ask is because I've been very excited to try these out, waited the full month and worked up to rating 3 to unlock them. I finally get it, buy 6 of these bad boys and bolt them to my ASP EX and meet up with a friend.
I unleash all 6 on him, expecting to turn him into a supernova, and he says his heat went up to 60%.

6 Retribution Lasers...all at once...only 60% heat (Fer-De-Lance w/ no heatsinks).

Normal beam lasers with thermal shock do more heat damage than the Retribution Laser, and without sacrificing the ability to apply conventional damage (not to mention you don't have to get to rating 3 in Powerplay and also have to wait a full month for a laser you can only get in small and fixed).

Maybe I'm using these wrong? Is there something I'm not getting?

If anyone could clear this up for me, I would appreciate it. I put them in storage for now so I can try them again if need be.

Thanks in advance :D

Retributor lasers are no good, it's true. Tested these thoroughly in the last beta to see what they could do with mods. Result? Not much. No damage, very little heat. Better off mailing your target a scalding cup of coffee with a faulty lid.

With heat mods and efficient beams, I was able to get some targets up to 79% heat after several minutes, while they sat there and let me shoot at them. In game the target would be dodging more often. So yes, they're pretty useless.

I bought some extras and modded them all with thermal shock. I was able to get them to 102% after about 20 secs of continuous fire (with all 6 hardpoints firing). You're right, completely useless for real combat.

Although I must admit, I didn't check against hull only. Would that make a difference?

But they are great for warming up your socks before putting them on!

In 2.2.01 heat was nerfed into the ground, being made subject both to diminishing returns and a hard cap of weaponised heat inducement of 100% (although the target ship can go over this by carrying out high thermal load actions, such as firing rail guns - I have got a PvP FdL up to 200%).

Crucially, heat inducement is closely tied to DPS. Because the Retributors are a very low DPS weapon, their heat inducement is very low.

Whatever special, Powerplay-specific, heat bonus Retributors receive is trivial.

The solution is obvious: FDev should code up the Retributor so that, in heat terms, they start to function like a much, much larger weapon.

Although heat itself will continue to remain useful only for harassment / suppression, at least then Retributors would have some relevance, within that limited window.

I ran five thermal shock weapons and six heatsink launchers on my Corvette, which didn't even have any SCBs, in 2.1.

In 2.2 I run zero thermal shock weapons and two or three heatsink launchers to support dual A7 SCBs.

Weapons that add heat to the target are borderline useless, currently.

Interesting points Truesilver.

I very much hope the Retributor will become exempt (if not mitigated from) blanket nerfs to thermal weapons, since that's the retributors intended specialty.
The impression I get is that the retributor needs a serious re-work to be a viable choice. I don't think it's implemented as intended.

They were only useful for a week in the 2.1 beta. That's it. Then they got nerfed to the ground before engineers release, then heat got nerfed as well. Before that the laser didn't even work.

Now it does so little heat that it's of little difference compared to the version that didn't work.

The Alliance is not allowed to have nice things apparently. The only thing the Alliance is allowed to have is to accept any player submitted articles that slander it.

Yup, being part of the Alliance is Elite hard mode. We're not only competing with other commanders, but also with the game itself.
Would just like the Retributor to actually be worth it. At least it would be something good for the Alliance for once.

There are very few PP weapons that are worth having. IMHO, the Prismatic Shield, The Advanced Plasma, Imperial Hammer and i am trailing the Pack Hounds now. everything else is about as useful as an ashtray on a Motor bike. Hopefully when FD look at PowerPlay they may do something with these weapons/shields.

I have not tried the FSD thingy yet, but that is next on the list.

The ones i have mentioned, with good engineering, are quite useful.

All this is 'In My Humble Opinion' and now way represents other peoples views, but i would be interested in here how other people use the useless stuff i have not mentioned.

I want some Retribution Lasers in case Frontier wake up one day soon and decide they should be useful against Thargoids.
But I can't even find anywhere that sells them.

I've been Rank 5 - and I'm over a hundred weeks pledged - do I have to hold Rank 3 for a month again to buy them?
Where from?
Does anyone know?

Currently they are like this but I hope one day to fit them to my ship and have something to show for 100plus weeks pledged to big Eddie.

Strange - they should be available to you from every station that has Outfitting. You certainly don't need to drop rank. You may be into bug report territory.

Try Jameson in Shinrarta if you have access, or 'i Sola Prospect' in Brestla if you don't. These two stations both sell every module in the game, always. The second one is a ground base that is unlocked for all but the modules cost +20%.

Frontier pulled a Bungie and nerfed them into the ground a year or two ago, just like what they did with Thermal Shock engineer mods.
