Rift hdmi port users

Not that ive seen, looked for one when i ordered this 1.2 adapter and couldn't find any either. Surely they must be in the works. Ill post back if/when i find one.

Well since it seems there might be something to this, I'll give it a try. Just means I'll have to swap my screen over to HMDI, but worth it if it improves the Rift's visuals.

Found this one on Amazon (US) "used in Like New" condition for $13.81. It's an Active adapter so theoretically should be better suited for HMDs and other multi-screen environments due to increased bandwidth.

  • (ACTIVE ALTMODE) DP to HDMI converter, Eyefinity Multiple Screen SLS mode compatible, Compatible with AMD Eyefinity Technology
  • Supports DisplayPort1.2 and 4 lanes, AC coupling capable for level shifting, Support DisplayPort 1.2a input and HDMI1.4b output.
  • Connect Standard DP (DisplayPort) Laptop/PC to HDMI port display Devices. Power Sources from DisplayPort to HDMI side
  • Support 4K X 2K & 3D video formats over HDMI, Compliant to HDMI 1.4b specification up to 3.0Gbps, Jitter Cleaning PLL for best compliance, Built-in DDC Active buffering Side-band Signals.
  • Superior Intra-pair and Inter-pair de-skewing, Powered from DisplayPort source.

It's not labeled as 1.4 but they do claim to support the 1.4b specs. It should arrive on Friday and I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

For those baffled about why this works, it's an nvidia dynamic range thing, see here ...

Yup, you can usually disable it in the monitor settings, but as the Rift doesnt appear there, you cant access the settings. The DP uses the full range setting by default. Someone with a little more knowledge could probably just change the config file or so, without needing the adapter.

I'm currently using an active 4K DP adapter for my monitor, when I plug the rift in to it I get coloured horizontal lines all over the display so have to disconnect.

I'll order that one from Amazon and see if it makes a difference.

I ordered the DP adaptor but don't really see any difference, can anyone suggest a good way to test it? I.e particular rift app or ED situation?

I tried the Apolo 11 "orbit the moon scene)" but it looks just as black with either HDMI only or DP cable,

I have a Titan X (Pascal) by the way, which has HDMI 2.0b, maybe it is already running full colour etc through HDMI?

Thanks :)

Just to update about Apollo 11 - I see the grey banding issue now, if you start the Orbit the Moon section, before the sun pops out the space backdrop has very noticeable grey shading, low res looking. However, this looks the same to me on both HDMI or DP adpater.

That could be the reason.

The most obvious scene in Elite was approaching the nightside of a planet. With dynamic range on, you see the whole planet with all craters and stuff, but very washed out, with full range, the dark side is pitch black and only the light skythe on the planets rim is visible. When ambient light kicks in, the details get a bit more visible, but you need the lights for landing and driving the SRV.

This is all very interesting — does anyone know if it's relevant to the Vive too, or is there something about the Rift that makes it specific to that?

Thanks for the info. I have just tried flying to the dark side of a planet, this is with my Rift connected via the HDMI > DP adapter (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013G4EXMM/ref=pe_1909131_77697001_tnp_email_TE_AMZLdp_1) and NO monitor connected to GFX card (as that is also DP only).

I am seeing the craters and a dark grey surface, certainly not deep pitch black :( any ideas? Thanks !

It is like i have never used a Rift before... The effect is simply wow, even in Apollo 11. There is a little banding in the lens flare in the earth scene, and a little banding in the space backdrop in the moon scene, but far far less than before. No more issues at the day/night line, color and contrast is beyond anything, i have seen so far on a Rift. I would say, black is 10 - 15% deeper now and so are the color values (may daily work is with 2D and 3D image software for the past 28 years...). I hate it, that we cant really catch this on screenshots to compare... its just hot air, if one has to rely on what other say...

I will now test further in Elite and see, if i can find planets, that have visible craters on their nightside from beyond orbit, to see, if i can get results like @sam75 described...

One could actually check and measure the difference by connecting a TV to the HDMI, displaying a colorful picture with high contrast (like a screenshot from a planet in Elite) and then switch the color range from dynamic to full and back... that is exactly what i have with the Rift...

Thanks Frank_G

Just to confirm - the settings to change the colour range, are you changing this in the NVIDIA control panel? With my TV connected to another PC. I need to select "use NVIDIA settings" under the "Adjust video color settings" section to get access to the Dynamic range option, just want to make sure I am setting it correctly.

Just got my adapter, Sweet. Definitely richer color, blacker blacks, more detail in nebulae. Galaxy map pops. Slightly sharper. Best $13 I have ever spent. Better and brighter in DCS and Assetto as well. Kudos Y2K

If you own Apollo 11, watch it. You havent really seen it yet :)
