Rift hdmi port users

Wasn't this the problem that was supposed to be fixable by a "perform clean install" of NVidia drivers. I think that made a difference for me.

I ordered and installed the adapter.

I did help.

There is a clearer picture and the god rays are a little better.
Its not a HUGE difference, but it was noticeable.

Good call on the adapter.

Just installed it and I can see a definite improvement, not massive, but noticeable. Improved blacks and cleaner looking nebulae. The oculus room looks cleaner and brighter. For only a few groats it's worth buying IMHO.

All I get is an Oculus hardware error.
When I connect it to the television there is no picture at all.
I guess they send me a rotten cable.

That really s....s. I hope you have no trouble getting replacement.

Its funny how the experience differs from a tiny to a massive improvement. If i look at the numbers, 16 - 235 vs 0 - 255 is more than 16% increase in the spectrum. Funny that a lot of people only notice it as a little improvement. I work in the graphics industry for 28 years now and the difference really blew my mind. I did not understand, that a regular cell phone display could generate deep and saturated colors and the HMD display could not... For me, the adapter solution delivered everything, that was missing from the VR experience.

Youre welcome. I have read here on the forums, that active adapters dont work with the Rift at all. Better order a second passive one, before being disappointed again.

[edit] And not making a huge difference depends on the viewer. You get more than 16% color range on top... Using 16.7 mil as a base, would mean 2,672,000 values... Not a small difference in my opinion.

I would be really grateful if anyone who IS seeing a difference with the adapter, and has Bigscreen (free on Steam) or Virtual Desktop - would you mind looking at this image while in the Rift:

It is a full range test image, if you have full range you will see 4 boxes, if not only 2. I am seeing 4 when using HDMI, or via the DP adapter.

I would live to know if you get 2 boxes when using HDMI.

Thanks :)

Has anyone with the adapter who saw a difference between HDMI and DP been able to try this? Thanks :)

Thanks for the sympathy. I just got an email, they will refund me.
I think I will wait for the active one I ordered from China and see if that makes a difference.
Reading this thread, it doesn't seem to make such a huge difference, that it can't wait.

Im pretty sure active adapters dont work with the rift, also i ordered a cheapo from china before my rift even come and it didnt work which is why i ordered the one off amazon because my big screen tv uses a hdmi port aswell..

How to describe the difference, the best way i can do that is its like going from a bad tv signal to a good one - thats how it was for me, instant and very noticeable.

Using a 780TI I can see the colour gradient easily in the background sky. I've bought the same DP to HDMI adapter and sadly it hasn't made any difference to the image for me. :-(

Not good to hear... In the lighter regions, i can see slightest banding, when several effects like lensflares etc are displayed as well. But those pixelated areas are gone and the the difference in color and contrast is instantly noticible, even in the menu screen.

I just ordered the exact same adapter Y2K you took, and I will post my feeling about this in 2 days when I'll receive it. I also opened a thread in Oculus Forum to check if other have found the same improvement. BTW I'm using currently a GTX1080 and a DVI to HDMI adapter, which is also using the limited range due to DVI according my investigations on the Internet.

There was a tool by NVidia, but it is no longer available, as they say, they fixed the issue... Obviously not. I like the adapter solution more anyways. Now they can reintroduce the bug whenever they want, without me needing to react in any way...

So, if I can see 4 shades while wearing the Rift (using Virtual Desktop), can I assume that I am getting the full range? And moving to a DP will not give me any value?

Hey, stevesideas, did you only see 2 colors on HDMI before swapping to the DP adapter? I have a 980ti like you, but I see 4 colors using the rift on HDMI.

When you can clearly seperate all 4 boxes in the Rift, then your color range is most likely already at maximum.

I suggest to find another image for this test. Using my monitor (which is a TV) and switching in NVidia control panel from full to limited range and I can see in both case the 4 boxes. Saying that, when I select full range the 4 boxes are far more visible than if I set limited range. That mean we need a test pictures with more level of gray or colors to be sure we got it.
