Clear text and no stuttering or lag - LOW RIG specs
Hello Commanders!
I have been playing and lurking on the boards since Beta 1.0 a couple of months ago. When I first heard about DE, a remake of my favorite game in the 80s, I wish I had found about the kickstarter, I would have been an Alpha backer for sure.
This is my first post on the forum, and I would like to share my experiences with you. My DK2 arrived last Friday, after reading this forum group I had no hesitation in taking the plunge and ordering the DK. After a lot of tinkering, following forum suggestions I have found a fantastic set up, which I now believe can only get better with some fine tuning. Some I am eager to share and get some feedback.
Here is my story:-
When I head about DE I went on line and purchased instantly. I then found the forums and discovered I needed a fairly powerful PC to run it. My PC is a 7 year old Dell Vostro 400, Q6600 processor, 4GB RAM with on board graphics and sound, Win7(64). Pants! ED ran and I got about 12 FPS ... I need a new PC. As a first step, I decided to upgrade GPU to a GTX 750TI as it was backward compatible with old MoBo and forward compatible for future upgrades. I thought £160 was a lot to pay for a graphics card, not played games since 90s! I almost fell over when I saw the cost of a titan.
Fitted card and WOW - over 200FPS with VSYNC disabled. Major step up! Having fun playing ... decided 4K monitor would enhance experience ... then I tried 3D mode in anaglyph with some 3D cinema specs ... again wow (why don't folks talk about that mode much - if you don't have a RIFT it works quite well) ... purchased X52 HOTAS ... wow ... purchase delan clip for head tracking ... purchased EDTracker ... purchased VoiceAttack ... having great fun testing and tuning my experience.
Then I discovered Oculus Rift ...
First experiences were tantalizing but disappointing - judder everywhere and text totally unreadable - figured my rig not up to it ....
Studied the ED and OR forums some more and tried all the different combos - figured my rig not up to it ....
Set core parking to 100% - set Win7 OS to system performance settings (My Computer, Advanced Settings) - a wing and a prayer ...
This evening I decided to give one more try before going out and buying a new rig over the weekend and wow wow wow ....
1. I uninstalled the OR runtime
2. I installed 0.4.4
3. Set resolution via NVidea to custom 1980x1080 for OR in extended mode (monitor 2) - locked at 75hz - all settings low or forced off in game profile
4. Connected RIFT - for quick test I DID NOT CONNECT CAMERA OR SYNCH CABLE - only the OR USB and HDMI (using DVI adaptor) cables
5. Fired up ED and set application parameters to match
I have flown around quite a bit, I am not currently capturing FPS, but I am so excited by the results that I wanted to share with you all immediately. Text is clear to read
and no more mico-judders - really playable with my old clunker. I will upgrade sometime soon but waiting as long as I can ... I cant believe some of the high end machines are having so many problems if I can run it.
IMPORTANT:- One more thought ... Rift seems to track OK without the camera - at least well enough for ED for me - I still have 360 deg views ... maybe the camera or its interface is introducing lag and causing the jitters. Also if camera is only tracking forward and back, I can live with a static head view point - I have a seat belt on after all! In the fixed head position - still rotates fine the FOV is locked ... that also means the the text is not moving - this is probably the biggest factor in establishing the text clarity IMHO and for better focus on other ships, planets etc - everything much sharper. Anyone had similar experience - I am curious if this is repeatable?
So back to 'testing' and tweaking, but with a big grin now I know my investment in time and play experience is going to pay off. If you want more details about my other config settings, I will collect and report back further in this thread.
