I enjoy the fundamental structure of other MMOs, meeting people, collaborating to achieve common goals, scoring loot, exploring and marking achievements. Within other MMOs I do enjoy world vs. world and player vs. player within their isolated instances. Risk to assets is non-existent within WvW and PVP in other MMOs so those instances are fairly well-populated.
There is authentic risk to assets through PvP in Open in Elite.
The perception of authentic risk is magnified through the reports of ganking through the forums, many youtube videos, and the glee expressed by many player killers within the forums.
I have personally lost 4 ships while clean and non-aligned to other players. 2 at barnacle sites, 2 during CG’s. No tears, just the facts. I had no chat interaction with the players at the barnacle sites. I interacted with the 2 commanders at the CGs, both cited non-pirate, non-RP, non-faction related reasons to attack.
Sandro Sammarco has reported in recent interviews that the actual incidence of “ganking” is quite low on the spectrum of player to player interactions, yet an upcoming revision to Crime and Punishment mechanics has received substantial development and public attention. I may be suspicious by nature, but there does seem to be some dissonance between statements of ganking frequency and the C&P revision. In my opinion, C&P revision is about the perception of risk in Open.
If the C&P revision is more about addressing perceptions of security than actual security (since gank frequency is “low”), then will an effort to sell risk reduction be an effective means to change the play-style / habits of players? In my opinion – no.
This may be my American bias sneaking in, but many of our city mayors have tried extremely hard to revitalize city centers through expanded police security, and the creation of attractions (sports stadiums, shopping centers, theaters, etc.). There is usually a bump in population and commerce for a few years, but over time there is a withering of interest and resurgence of the perceptions of crime and risk in city centers.
The revision of C&P does not even include an “attraction”, it simply offers to reduce risk through expanded punishments.
It has been stated in other threads that rewards of +25% above base commerce and mission compensation could and should be offered to incentivize participation in Open. I contend that there would have to be a vastly greater reward incentive to get PVE players to participate in Open, since it is the perception of risk that is being addressed. Even if Quince level rewards were offered for basic game participation in Open, I suspect that most PVE players would stay solo or pg.
So all of you PVE folks that are out there, beyond C&P, is there any reward worth the risk of Open?
