Rock Research Ring

iOkWqn0.png

I'm looking to establish a loose collective of solid surface scientists and set up a base of operations in the upcoming Colonia Expansion Initiative.
You can apply for a visa here: https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/colonia-expansion-initiative
(mostly so I don't have to keep working out of my own ship and only occasionally crash at Jaques bar)

To that end I'll need enough support for the concept and expertise to make it through one of the expansion cycles.

the concept

This "group" only being a loose collective there won't be any special communication channels or events (unless it happens to grow over my head) and I would personally stick to the CCN, teamsters, rock rats and other channels.
And while I'm not opposed to setting up external offices in other ports and systems in case that happens to develop, I'd rather focus to avoid exhaustive expansions and work to improve the services of the base itself - which will require some political and economical expertise in possibly uncommon directions.

My own work, which would fall under the accomplishments of the Rock Research Ring, has been mapping the asteroid belts and rings of Colonia for their content (resources and materials) and publicly sharing the results. This has helped to strengthen the Colonia Community and is now a great resource for missions, synthesis and engineering in the entire galaxy (the results help to predict where to find resources in any location). But I would also like to see the facilities used for rock rat work (analysing planet surface material distribution) and more abstract studies of resource distribution in the galaxy.

It is still unclear how the expansion initiative will go, but in case the base gets established in a new system I'd be aiming for a primary economy type of service (=research). Secondary economy types in order of importance: refinery, high tech, extraction, industrial (we are looking to analyse samples from the surrounding systems first and foremost, thus local extraction and industrial scale have lowest priority).

If we get to decide name and location of the base, I'm open for suggestions. Personally wouldn't be opposed to being situated around a distant secondary star (especially if that comes with an interesting location/view), but I'm sure most would prefer being close to the arrival point.

required expertise and support

I'm a scientist, not a manager. Thus I'm likely not a good match to run the expansion initiative or a resulting base with a lot of success.

It would be okay if initial support is just enough to set up the base and I would absolutely welcome it if it is controlled and run by a different faction afterwards.
(to that end this faction could technically also simply be added to the home from one of the factions below)
Current list of potential partners to run the logistics:

  • Colonia Research Department
  • Colonia Research Division
  • Colonia Refinery Operations
  • Colonia Tech Combine
  • Colonia Mining Enterprise
  • Colonia Mining Co-operative
  • Colonia Exploration and Research
  • Asgard Research
  • Canonn Colonia Department
  • Radio Sidewinder Galactic
  • Explorers' Nation
I will expand this as the expansion initiative proceeds.
(personally have a soft spot for the Mining Co-operative, but the Refinery Operations might be best to easily get a hold of samples - the research factions seem to be focused on the respective ammonia and earth like worlds)

If there are opportunities to improve the facilities after the base is build, priorities would be on a universal cartographics connection (to gather data), a market (to gather samples and supplies), restock (limpet and SRV supply) and an empty outfitting and shipyard (to store and transfer equipment).

the first month

Here is some of my experience for the first batch of Galactic Travel Guides brought to Colonia.

So what can you do, regardless of your current position, to help during this month (and potentially months to come as necessary)?

If you are in Colonia and not intending to visit the bubble you can map resources and materials of the area and spread the service of the rock research ring. All my mapping documents are open for submission.
I can drop you a few Galactic Travel Guides to chime in on this CG if you like.

If you are in the bubble you can help fill up ships transporting Galactic Travel Guides to Colonia. It takes 10 minutes for the supply to get back up to 10 tons when you don't have any, so help is needed to get >100 tons loaded up quickly.
You can also help loading up ships for other factions you'd like to support. This is as much a collaborative effort as it is competitive and maybe some of them will appreciate it and return the favour (most important for the ones getting their bases after this month - as they will have succeeded and won't be a competition anymore - the best allies one can have).

Beyond that you can invest some time and credits into building a transport vessel as described in the link above. Do not settle for anything that has a much worse tons/jump ratio unless you want to make a trip to Colonia anyway.
You won't be of much help taking forever to transport a small amount. (unless you happen to convince a whole bunch of others to do the same ... ;) )
While we don't know whether the future Migration Appeals in upcoming months will follow the exact same format, we can assume that a ship of this type will be useful regardless. So consider this preparation and practise.

Once you have a ship ready to get loaded, temporarily replace the AFM units with collector limpet controllers (store the AFMs, I think Bluford doesn't have them at that size and grade).
Buy your own allocation for 10 tons, a bunch of limpets and then look through all your available channels for help. Discord, steam, friends list of commanders online in the bubble and commanders present at Bluford.
Fetch some high value commodities to pay for the Galactic Travel Guides if necessary.

Good luck on your journey(s)
:)

the second month

The campaign continues as before. However, contributions from the previous month will carry over and this month the top 5 will set up bases.

According to my own contributions last month we should be starting out just below the top 10.

Now that contributions are known to carry over between months I do however expect many more factions to join in with full force - so even keeping up the pace may not see us maintain the current standing.

With the expertise gathered from last month we can certainly push a little harder without going mad in the process, but I now expect it to take a few more months to get through.

Thanks for all the help :)

the third month

Continuing as before (still top 5 going through) and since last month we have the support of an established colonial faction: Radio Sidewinder! If you wanna help out you can pop into their discord to request loading or offer to help with loading.

We made 7th place last round, which puts us to start in 2nd place this month!

However I won't be able to contribute for two weeks, so to maintain top 5 for a base a lot of additional help will be required.

edit: Due to some miscalculations month 2 had 6 instead of 5 factions entering, which had us start out even higher and it seems we made it through!

Total estimation from Darkmoor:

From what I've been able to track, we can at least add another 5,090 for a minimum total of 9,071.

Once settled in I'll rejig this thread a bit.

If we get to decide name and location of the base, I'm open for suggestions.
Got a first name suggestion for the base myself :D

"Prospector's Reach"

Also I'm now slowly opening up my own databases for contribution. Up till now you could contribute to the asteroid material list by sending me mining journal logs (and you still can).
It shows the currently recorded drop chance of materials per location.

Additionall I just directly opened up the list of belt asteroids in Colonia for contribution.
You can complete data sets or add new asteroids to the list.

I also intend to set up maps for all our extraction sites and have anyone contribute to the mapping effort.

And of course you are always welcome to grab a copy of the data for analysis. Whether you are looking to create something simple like the asteroid almanac (which by the way will be moved out of the belt asteroid document to reflect data from the entire galaxy in the future), or something more complex.

Would be nice to have a base or a faction that relates to the Rock Rats. After all they have always been at the tip of research, long distance support, helping Commanders in the deeps of black space. Oh I could continue for days here.
I WANT THIS TO BE THE COLONIAL BASE OF OPERATION FOR THE ROCK RATS!

Cheers Karaya

You can apply for a visa to support the rock research ring now!

Also there are now three extraction site maps open for contribution.
Can you map more diamond asteroids than Fuchsov? (note that I only transferred previously found asteroids onto the map - I did not find any myself yet)

Am on a business trip in the bubble myself. Had a lot of pending invites, tip offs, new technology and modifications to collect.
I will also try to use my time there to set up engineering focused resource maps for the bubble, but am ready to rush back to Colonia the moment an effort for a base goes live.

edit: oh and another base name suggestion from the rock rats discord to keep the alliteration game up: "Rock Rats Reach"

That is one thing i was always a little sceptic about, i would like to have the Rock Rat's name in there somewhere, after all, it is mainly Rock Rats (colonia or not) who will be behind this initiative and i couldn't quite see, why you wouldn't just use the Colonia Rock Rats as a faction to be placed out there.
Then again, this kinda sounds selfish and i DO wanna open the doors for all kinds of people aswell, so it might be a good thing to keep it neutral.
You got my voice afterall and you got things rolling already, so i guess we'll just go with it.

Cheers,
CMDR Greytest

List of potential partners updated with two more research oriented factions that are trying to set up a base as well.

Don't know if this is possible but why don't you just name the base "Rock Research Ring" (get one of those round bases) and name the faction "Colonia Rock Rats". Anyway, i already pledged support for the fuel rats so uhh... Viel Glück YinYin, i guess.

We only got to submit a faction name, don't know if we get to decide base names - and me not being a rock rat myself and this including more beyond what they started with I wanted to have something new and more general (instead of just branching off something that exists in the bubble - a generic "Colonia #Faction Name#" is pretty boring to be honest).

If this were a name for the location rather than the faction it'd sound more like an orbis starport ;)
This being a base I would want to stick closer to how those are generally named.

The first Colonia Migration Appeal is live and commanders are tasked to bring a rare commodity (Galactic Travel Guides from Bluford Orbital in LHS 3447) to Jaques Station.
It is not yet certain how the Colonia Council will evaluate contributions, by total amount of delivered tons or each unique contributing commander.

Unique commander contributions would see those getting the first 10 bases that have the most total commanders making the trip with each submitting at least one ton (that could be a large group already present getting several tons delivered to submit one each).
The classic total tons delivered would favour those who have the most organised commanders present in the bubble (many submitting their rare allocation to fill fewer large ships).

Either way collaboration and numbers are the key, so get in touch with other commanders and help those who need info on which migration group is best suited for them.

Beyond that I will greatly appreciate anyone who is in to support the Rock Research Ring for the long run. It may not be among the first 10 this month or first 3 next month, but hopefully some time in the future.

Until then, be ready enjoy your ship quarters some more. (or an apartment at Jaques if you can afford it - or one of the limited spaces available at the other stations)

edit:

I have never set foot into an Anaconda myself. Maintenance cost far too high and no actual use for it. It looks like that will finally change.

I don't want to see anyone supporting this effort burning out (it may need to run through several months!), so here is the most essential aspect for taking part: you need to optimise your delivered tons/jump ratio.
That means you are neither building your ship for maximum cargo capacity nor maximum range. There should be a sweet spot in between.

I will be spending my time this month building such a ship. That means I'll be mostly in the bubble and able to help loading your vessels.

Lori didn't seem to bother nudging the Pilots Federation into handing out Elite:Deadly ranks again when she sent out invites to commanders without access to her system, so I cannot fully optimise this Anaconda yet.

This is the rough build I currently aim for.

And this is the route it would take.

Every shaved off light year can make for a sizeable reduction in required jumps. You can push this below 200.
But as you can see there is a distinct focus on safety as well. It's no use being fast if you loose cargo or the entire ship along the way.
(you may want to consider a light weight heat sink launcher too if you aren't confident about dealing with heat)

A boost in particular is very helpful for getting through the normal space turbulence of a plasma jet to engage super cruise. Without it you are dead or waiting for assistance to tow you back out (a disconnect during a super charged jump will easily put you into that situation - I've been there and my dirty drives saved me; I'm not even sure if this planned build is enough).

another edit: On using spansh for custom tailored neutron star routes, you gotta fiddle with the efficiency value a bit to find the lowest amount of jumps for your range. The results only really change in increments of 5, so you can open a few route plot requests for 25, 30, 35, ..., 50, etc. At higher ranges the optimum for this particular trip seems to be at 55 right now (this may change with more neutron stars added to edsm). For lower ranges it can be somewhere else.

Also there is an optimal procedure for jumping and plotting routes that makes for zero down time:

You copy the next system to jump to (and tick off where you are - two clicks) while your FSD engages and brings you to the current destination.
Once there you get into scooping or super charging position, open the map and paste select the next destination.

You will likely have an idea on the method for normal scooping already (these will require you to actually plot a route most of the time).

Super charging is a little different and highly depends on the jet size.

First of all you'll need to close in on the neutron star as much as your ship is comfortable with (heat!) when you arrive.
Then you need to fly around it (star perpendicular to you) towards the closer jet. Aim just outside, not straight at it.
Once next to it you pitch away from the star and aim at the jet's center. On most jets you can now throttle to 25% and comfortably open your map.
On the really thin/tame ones you will have to fly into the jet first, stop and then open your map (otherwise you won't be charged flying through it).

On the map you now only paste and select the next destination, do not plot a route (you may not be super charged yet).
Close the map to return to your super charging ship. It most likely won't be charged yet, but as soon as it is you can engage your FSD and throttle out of there.

On the long neutron star chains you will need to keep an eye on your fuel gauge and occasionally select a scooping system right beside the next neutron star (filter for KGBFOAMN).

Also FSD malfunctions start at around 80% integrity. Make a repair stop in normal space before you drop below that.

Updated the first post with some info on what you can do this month :D

I can help out with engineering long range rare haulers if needed.

I'm pretty active in that thread and that already pushed this one from 100 up to 500 views recently.
Not a big fan of essentially copy pasting what this thread contains everywhere else for advertisement.

If you feel like you are capable of non obnoxious advertising for this, feel free to do so - that's exactly the kind of expertise we need :D

Personal recap for the first month:

I made 3 trips while improving my ship, delivering a total of 882 tons (262+304+316). Clearly I didn't grind my hands bloody :) but just another trip would have put us within top 20 if the list is correct and depending on how much exactly everyone else delivered we must be just below top 20 (#20 is at 1080 tons).

Big news for the second month: contributions from last month will carry over, which means we are starting out with around 1000 tons just below the top 10 for now (first 10 places are getting their bases).
Also instead of the top 3 getting a base after the second month, it will actually be the top 5. Thus the list of heavy hitting factions will clear out faster.

If we can keep our pace and aren't outrun too hard by those who are joining in just now in troves we may get a base in the 3rd or 4th month.

New logo and project page on CCN up in the first post!

Did 960 tons in 3 trips last round myself:
y7U9fAL.jpg

Unfortunately won't be available for the first half of the third round.

It looks as though we are sitting pretty good... depending on how many other factions are splitting up the 40K or so of unaccounted deliveries.

Good luck, Rock Rats! ;)

Looks like you made it in my absence!

Even though they have a shaky counting ability and we may still drop some ranks I want to hear some more good suggestions for system and base names. Current top contenders are "Rock Rats Reach" (base) in "Polonia" (system), but I do want to know which system we actually get and try to contact the first discoverers for ideas as well.

The base is built.

We are settled on the furthest planet of the main star in Eol Prou IW-W e1-533 (cartographics update still pending, so we don't know the accepted system name yet), which is tidally locked to a gas giant (you will always see it at the same spot in the sky).

Both are ringed and there are tons of extraction sites and other landfall planets in system (which I have yet to add to my list - but I'll be busy with the resource drive for now).

The planet has double gravity, so be careful on approach.

Management already issues bounties, takes in exploration data, has a market and advanced maintenance (repair/limpets). Missions and passenger contracts are yet to be posted.

Well, congratulations on getting yourself set up, YinYin. :) I've only just found you (guys? One guy? A girl?)--and not on the forums, I was scudding around Colonia, not sure whether to go back to bounty hunting or make a mining run, when I happened to find your base. I saw the controlling faction name, found this, and so far, while not a scientist myself (I like playing with fire and pewpew too much) I find you more interesting/entertaining than any of the other factions I've so far found in Colonia. I'm not really a "joiner", But I'd kinda like to meet you and yours a bit. You in Mobius?

Hey, there isn't much to join anyway :D the chatting and resource sharing mostly happens in the Miners & Rockrats channel on ccn.

I'm usually in open, but I do have one of the mobius groups to meet in.
