Roleplaying/Commander biographies in Elite?

Hullos all!

One thing I would love to see in the game is a chance to write a biography for your commander, that anyone can see.

I already have a small background story written for my commander, would love to have that "connected" to my ship. It wouldn't have any impact on the game whatsoever, but I think it'd add some nice flavour to the game, if people could write a small paragraph about their commanders.

I'd love to do a bit of roleplaying in-game, but alas, I don't think Elite will be very much roleplaying-ish.

You're playing as a spaceship commander 1000+ years in the future, what more role-playing do you need?
I didn't need more to dress in flightsuits and play FE2 back when I was 15-16 years old :D

Nice Idea @ Fangrim !!

I loved it in EvE, i loved even more in SWG and City of Heroes/Villains, just right click on a Target and there was the "Story/Background". I had Days where i was actually not playing, i was just reading Background Stories.

I will never forget the early Times from SWG. They had GM's in place which where reading your Background Stories and they awarded good Story's with a Badge. And now guess who's getting one? :) I was soooo proud because these Badges where not that often given.

Would be indeed nice to have such an Option within Elite!!!

haha! (me too.)

Mine will be:

"Captain Laton worked in an office and dreamed of the stars. He bought a basic ship with money he won from a scratchcard, flipped his boss the bird, and flew off to explore the galaxy."

This is an interesting idea, although one that would potentially be easy to exploit for griefers, trolls, people trying to advertise in-game, etc.

Indeed - but then you'd be just another commander in just another spaceship. In the original Elites it was single-player only, and there was no need for a character biography.

To me, playing an open-ended game is not just playing the game. I like to make a character personality and then act accordingly. Even in single-player games such as Mass Effect, where you have "good" and "evil" choices, I play the game through several times, each time with a different personality.

It adds a bit of spice to my game, I think, and so I'd love to see a possibility in Elite.

I'll be naming a planet and a space station in Elite - the names of those will be linked to my background story. That way, when people who's visited the planet and space station check my pilot, they'd suddenly realize what the names of the planet and space station means, and how they got their names.

Dammit Ashley - you're right! Sadly yes... This will be misused by some people :(

Do you know if it'll be possible for people to write a small paragraph to accompany the star systems, planets or space stations they named then? That would limit the number considerably, and it wouldn't be a huge effort to moderate, for you guys as you'd have to implement it in the game when you enter our chosen names.

Perhaps we could chose from a set of bio's, explorer, trader etc with the option of lots of various bits to create one, just to get around those that would abuse it? but I like the idea.

*waves*

Hmm...tbh, it was not a Problem in SWG so why should it be in an even less opened Game? I mean Multiplayer is different to MMORPG's, right? You might be right in terms of getting a Problem with Advertising something, but as a Player would have to active click on someone and open it, he can also close it ASAP when he discovers something which he don't wanna read.

That idea can work if Character BIO send first to game master and
if accepted, then it come visible to all.

All modifications to bio goes same route.

I think it is an interesting idea too. The problems from trolls/advertisers could easily be circumvented.

For example, using a similar model to forum profile creation. A few pull-down options could be added to fill-out a user's bio (e.g., star system of birth, career path, interests, etc.). Using similar Procedural Generation algorithms as those used to create the planet bios in Elite, this user-supplied information could generate unique and amusing profiles for each person.

Always thought this feature was weird in the MMO's that had it. If you're that interested in someone's life story why not just talk to them. That's real RP.

Maybe because I'll read them offline? I mean, "this space station is run by Mr. X". Who is Mr. X? I could still download that data even if I play strictly single player.

Maybe something to do while on a slow pace. Might not be what I do the most, but still a nice feature. Adds depth.

Its an interesting idea, but I'd be unlikely to write anything other than "space captain"
still, roleplaying and depth = good

What you can't fix in technology you fix by policy. I'm pretty sure the community here would do a good job of policing this themselves and report such infractions.

Dunno about bio's but I would like to see public records ie your crim status, ranks and standings in the factions, affiliations ie military, trader, Elite status etc. Also commander avatars ie faces/mug shots like eve are absolutely something I'd want. :D
