It's exciting times, I really hope this opens up the possibility of space travel for us mere mortals.

Threads merged :D

I like this :) after they stopped the Space Shuttle program, was hoping for a desent replacment. instead of the current old fasion rocket stuff. thats like going back to the 60s and the cumbersome computers that filled a room instead of bringing a Laptop or tablet to work.

I've been following Skylon for some time. It's fantastic project and quite a story from its start many years ago to today - well worth reading up on. The cost and time savings by using this system to take off and land on a runway are huge.

One saving that I never see mentioned is in the construction of satellites, etc. If their journey into space is rather nice and smooth, instead of a high-G shaky rocket ride, then you can afford to manufacture to lower tolerances. I watched a TV program about building satellites, and they put the components through the equivalent of a paint-mixer to make sure the satellites will survive their journey. If there's a single failure, then that could be the whole satellite written off.

Most articles I've read just focus on the kilo per dollar costs.
