Thanks Kancro Vantas, and thanks to CMDR Marek for doing such Sterling good work on the original list.

-------------

Since visiting Sagittarius A* is a significant achievement i figured it would be nice to have a thread for those who have braved the journey to the super-massive black hole in the center of our galaxy.
Please do make a post if you have visited the system and if you can share a screenshot or video.

Anyway here is a screenshot of my visit to the super-massive black hole.

I thought the theory of a black hole was it is speculated to be a point, why does it look like a big unlit planet?

is the black centre totally... black? unlike most black holes which are totally see through?
They're not see-through, you just can't get close enough to stellar black holes to see them. They're about 20 km wide and you're looking at them from about a lightsecond away (~300 000 km).

In reality, black holes are invisible. You cannot see black dots. If light cannot escape you see nothing at all. Nothing.

Sagittarius A* and beyond!

Left on the 2nd, arrived at Sagittarius A* on the 10th. I was hauling :)

Here are a few pictures I took.
Here's a selfie I took, cause really? Why not :) Has distance to Sol, the super massive black hole, and my hand!

This image is a bit clearer, you don't have the galactic disk distorted all the way through the image. You can see the distortion of the background stars clearly from this distance.

So the black hole is causing some gravitational lensing? What it is missing, it looks like, is some sort of accretion disk. But, who cares, its a cool view and an impressive journey you made.

because light cannot escape from beyond the event horizon.
You mean its theorized that light emitted from within an event horizon cannot escape since it is believed the escape velocity of an event horizon is greater than the speed of light.

If thats true you would still be able to see everything in front of the black hole. Shouldn't there be an accretion disc, maybe you could do some mining in there.

Just made it. Left mid-December, got caught in a bugged system Dec 27, couldn't enter the game until Jan 7. Explored a few hundred systems, found 4 earthlikes and dozens of waterworlds. Will post a proper thread with more pics.

OP, I recommend you search the forums and refer to all of the previous Sag A* explorer threads in your first post, so your thread gets traction. :)

That's close.... too close for comfort that's for sure.

EDIT: googled it and I was thinking the central SMBH of one of the giant local clusters which is HUGE.

[SPOILERS] Why doesn't Sagittarius A* have a station?

Hello commanders! After nearly a month exploring, I've finally gotten there, as more and more pilots are. Working down my Top 10 list, haven't reached Japanese Twins yet. :D

One thing I was wondering, why isn't there a station at our galaxy's core? Science for one, I imagine studying it to be of importance. And what about tourism? This is like the Grand Canyon, a week or 2 cruise, weekend at the (well shielded) station gaping at an ominous giant black sphere (with cool gravity lensing), what's not to like?

Or throwing in tourists to observe the effects of gravity gradients and relativity, FOR SCIENCE! :D

Anyway FD, don't let pesky Thargoids keep you from putting a station on prime real estate!

Another request for FD: allow disabling the "spiderweb" calculation of every available route, and allow us to choose a destination 500 LY away, and only calculate that route (like the third-party tools do). Jumping star-to-star using the galaxy map is PAINFUL.

A few pointers for those that want to make the trip:

  • It takes time: if you don't explore and go for speed it can be done in a few days. But it's a few days...
  • Maximum jump range is your friend, equip D modules with an A FSD, no weapons (until Thargoids in), no mining equipment, an AFM might be useful but not necessary. You are not going to lug that Palladium you prospected 52,000 LY there an back... Not worth it and it slows you down.
  • Biggest scoop you can fit so you spend less time refueling. "Drive by" refueling (flying close to the star while aligning and scanning) extends your range before refueling
  • Shield optional, you only get shot at in the first 500 LY or so
  • Lesser size fuel tank could be interesting if you don't want to worry about jump range, especially if "drive by" fuel scooping with a big scoop. Just make sure you have enough for 2 jumps at your max range in your tank, in case you hit an area with bad stars (which is very rare, especially near the core). Practice it first....
  • Advanced Scanner and Detailed Scanner, nuff said
  • Always jump to at least 75% of you max jump range, depending on available destinations. Saving fuel only makes you waste time.
  • Route planner can be OK in areas with sparse stars (e.g. inhabited space), but is pretty much useless near the core due to star density.
  • My stats are 60 seconds jump system-to-system, calculated from/to system arrival, includes scan, checking system map, going to the galaxy map, selecting next destination, aligning and jump. Longer of course if I spot a Metal-Rich, Waterworld or Earth-Like candidate in the system map, since I go do a Detailed Scan. 180 seconds refueling because I only fitted a size 3, which I now regret.

Without further ado, here are the pics (or it didn't happen).

Enjoy!
