Salt venting in progress

So I go to the Guardian site in Open and a guy drops in who's streaming. I let him take a shot and hang around to help him out. After he's got his blueprint he races around doing it again for me. But he scoops up all the mats and the scan at the end doesn't seem to work. Maybe because it was his relic, maybe because I'm dumb. I drop to Solo and try for myself but I'm getting blasted by missiles so I pop back to the bubble to regroup.

That was probably because my Point Defense was on a wing facing away from the site. So today I repositioned it and went out again. I wanted to buy another but even the local High Tech system didn't have any, and I couldn't be bothered to fiddle around.

18 jumps out, 5 minutes of SC and a fairly tricky landing later, I'm back on the ground.

So I mess around for ages. I've now got three ancient relics. I kill a couple of sentinels, but nothing else pops out of the ground. I go back to my ship to check YouTube videos.

Oh, you've got to activate the two next to the "alter" first. I go back out and do that. I still can't find my way around the site with any great understanding, but I finally find the last pylon and activate it before racing back to the alter. More haste less speed -- you've never seen a more untidy climb up toward the big glowy thing. I stop in the lighted area and select the right-hand panel with 40 seconds remaining.

The cargo bay is empty. The relic I picked up is back on the ship.

The third time will be the charm, but it won't be today and it may not be tomorrow.

It's all my fault. There's just a level of gud I've got to git.
I find that there are things that are really hard to do and annoying, but after getting the hang of it, it becomes super easy and efficient.

For me, guardian blueprints and mats gathering really were awful at first. I took it slow, got a system, and now it's all kind of relaxing. :)

The first time I went to a Guardian Site was to get the FSD Blue Print. I figured I collect all the materials and get to know my way around the joint and a rough idea as to just where all the poles were and at least get them out of the ground. In the mean time, killed a dozen sentinels one at a time. Once I had sufficent mat, I charged all the poles and headed to the alter. Killed 4 more sentinels one at a time which made it so there was no more threat. I had ALL the time in the world to drop the relic, which I had with me. Boom, up popped the orb, I targeted it and proceed to blast it and blast it until I was empty. Reloaded with the best ammo. Moved slightly as to get a better shot at the thingy inside the orb and again blasted it until I was empty. I'm not going to say just how many times I reloaded and tried from different angles, but it was more than thrice.

Not one for quitting, and considering there was no danger because I had killed all the sentinels and was in SOLO, so getting grieved was out of the question. I took a break and like OP watched a video. Well I was flabbergasted, I had watched the same video twice before and apparently feel asleep when the narrator stated one must "SCAN" the orb. Which apparently was correct because it worked.

They can be frustrating sites, particularly in the dark. Two things really helped me: point defence (on top hardpoint) and patience. Lots of patience.

The scenery is spooky and immersive, which I like.

Yeah, I really wish Frontier build Guardian sites with ramps instead of giant stairs... Either that or give us a hover craft SRV like the Goliath.

On the ones I think you're talking about (huge, impassable steps) I just go 'round to the side of the Data Terminal and drive up and over the slope. It's steep, but I like it better.

I followed the advice and took a DBX, so I could get in really close, with 2 PD turrets on top and then proceeded to make a right mess of things helped by the fact it was dark and misty and spooky which ED do far to effectively for my taste. Sorted it eventually once I realised I had been looking at the wrong site map.

Sounds just like me. :D
ED need not comply with the ADA (American Disability Act), ED is British or English or Cockney or etc etc etc.
We've got our own Accessibility laws here too. Frontier are in Cambridge though, so definitely not Cockney (which refers to people from a small part of London.) They're tied into the general discrimination laws: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/contents

Unfortunately, Guardian Structures were built a few million years before the laws came into effect.

FYI guardian relics are all over those sites, no need to bring your own. Keys are a different matter.

Wait...why do people need ramps? It's not like you can't scan the beacon from anywhere using the turret. I've scanned it from behind the structure just to get a better position to kill the sentinels when they appear.

I had one left over from my first trip and picked up two this time. It was popping back to the ship to watch videos that deposited them in my hold.
You still need to get up to the data port to drop the relic.

Before landing have a hover over the site to get an idea of the whole layout.
I did think to do that but, especially in the dark, it didn't tell me much. I could at least tell where the data port was and wherewould be a good place to land. It may be better when I've got enough experience to know what I am looking at.

A good idea I saw on one of the videos was to use the free camera both to scout and from a high and rear position as a third-person view.

One thing I still am not sure of: when you scan the data port, is it a data-link scan or a targetting scan? I had assumed it was a data-link scan, but I couldn't get that to work when the streaming guy dropped a relic for me. The videos never seem to say. I think I see it as a data link scan, but I'm not certain. Still, plenty of time to experiment at that point.

Hmm, yea. Collecting guardian stuff is a chore and collecting the blueprints can get really annoying. Especially if you in the future plan to collect more of them.

Perhaps the one and only positive: most people (me included) haven't practiced too much with the SRV before going for guardian stuff. Doing that is kind of a training course. When collecting the guardian stuff for tech broker upgrades, you inevitably end up being a noticeably better SRV pilot than before.

Night vision helps a lot, of course. And the camera is very handy for overhead shots, so long as you know which direction your SRV is pointing .... look for its headlights.
