Selling Ore For Merit Gain

Currently ive only been able to gain merits for stuff mined and sold in the same system.

Okay, I collected some tangible data for this. Preface: I am pledged to Kaine and started tonight at rank 10 with 57k merits. According to my journal file I spent 70 minutes from undocking at my carrier to selling the last of my mined goods. I mined and sold my goods in Ritila, which is a stronghold in boom next door to Tionisla (Kaine's HQ). I sold everything at the outpost conveniently placed next to the ring I was mining in, so I didn't check if I would get higher profit at other stations.
I went to a Monazite ring and cracked seven cores. I cracked every core asteroid I found regardless of the mineral, because I figured harvesting a lower value mineral is time better spent than not collecting anything while looking for the golden goose. Of course the only Monazite core was the last one I found. In total I collected 109 tons of ore.
I didn't bother testing for single sales vs. bulk, the first one was just to test if I got any merits at all. As you can see, the merits earned only depend on the profit you make and seem to be around 0.75 merits per 1000 credits profit. Also my Platinum sales suggest there is no bulk sale penalty for mined goods.
In total I made just shy of 38k merits in 70 minutes (undocking to docking), which comes down to 34k merits per hour. I also made 5 ranks in the process.

It keeps track of quite a lot of location things - Thargoid samples and pod rescues have been allocated to the system they were taken from for quite some time now, and lots of other Powerplay items are tagged with their location (in some interfaces you can even see where they're tagged from)
Works if you want money, doesn't work if you want merits.
This is why people thought mining was broken for the first few days, until someone figured it out, because "mining in a different system" is the most common case.
Except when you sell to an Acquisition system, where mining should be done in a supporting system, according to a reliable source, right?
just to keep the data flowing: I did two more mining sessions today. Different system, exploited by Kaine, economy again in boom. Here's my result:
The merits per profit figure fluctuates quite a bit, I have no clue why. Still, totally worth it, and personally I really enjoy core mining, I just didn't need to do it for credits anymore. Now I have a reason again to do it. Last three days I made 207k merits through core mining. I'm now rank 36 and just played around with my freshly unlocked Concord Cannon

It's really just a convention of the game, what difference does it make where you mined your crumbs of minerals in relation to the volume of rings. The main thing is on what market you sold it.
But even if you don't pay attention to this, mining and selling in the same system in the case of RS and US is nonsense.

How did
Is there an easy way to find such a system for a power? I am pledged to Pranav and can't seem to find a good system to both mine and sell materials. Everywhere I have looked, systems in boon I find do not have good hotspots, and systems with hotspots don't have good economy to sell in the same system.

I use the Inara commodities page to find a system with a decent sell price for a given ore. The page has a filter to select a specific power. Once I found a station with a decent price and demand I check the galaxy map if the system has rings to mine in.
Inara and EDTools both seem to help, but so far the entries just do not line up. Either I'm using these tools wrong or a system just does not exist for Pranav to reasonably gain merits from mining. I'll keep researching but I think I will need to find another method of gaining merits.
That's not impossible depending on what you're after - but there should be the raw materials to make one
- find a Pranav control system with decent rings and a refinery (core mining) or industrial (laser mining) economy: there will be some of these at least on the core mining side
- do other things in the system (trade, bounty hunting) to get it into Boom+Civil Liberty (or whatever state your mined goods want, but that's usually a relatively easy "good enough" set)
