Seriously....why can't we set a player control's profile....?

Once you've set your controls up again just backup the files in this location:

C:\Users\<profile name>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

If you lose them again just restore the files. Usually for me loading the game without a controller that was previously connected when I last ran the game messes the binds up.

It doesn't mess things up, it disables that profile until you connect the controller again.

Yes, that's part of the problem, I think. On elite starting up, It doesn't see the controller (for whatever reason**) and decides to disable that "Custom" profile, then the player starts binding things again and that overwrites the "Custom" profile - therefore the previous bindings are now completely destroyed.

The solution would be to allow players to save their bindings under a different name rather than just always "Custom". Although you'd still need to reload elite to get it to work. You can already do this manually, by renaming and editing the xml file. Although sadly this seems to often only show up as "Custom".

This is my brief knowledge of this matter, on the few occasions that it's gone wrong for me. I could be wrong. Maybe players can already save profiles?

** reasons could be because while an update is downloading, the controller itself goes to sleep and therefore elite when it finally starts up cannot see it? Who knows.

Well the rather glaringly obvious problem here is that you shouldn't have to go into a file and back up your key bindings. I've had to do it myself after getting sick of the game wiping my key bindings but it shouldn't happen in the first place.

I own and have owned dozens of games, no other game has forced me to back up game files or mess with my router and port forwarding settings, simply put this shouldn't happen.

AFAIK you can set up multiple control sets of you want, and losing controls is pretty rare. Have your updated your pc since 84? If not that may be the problem ;)
Losing control sets is constant.

My other kid borrowed the hand controller yesterday to play Fez.
I didn’t notice, fired up Elite, lost my bindings.

Had to go copy the backups into the live files again.

Is this a PC problem? If so, it is negated simply by backing up your Custom binds file. Not that I've lost one since 2.4.
If this is a Console problem... I dunno what to tell you there. Submit a report to Microsoft or Sony?

This.

The crap we put up with in this game the usual suspects come running to defend time and again on here is remarkable...

Ever since I started playing ED (Aug '14), I made sure to have my controllers - HOTAS and pedals - connected, before hitting the update key.
I've never lost my control bindings.

I do keep a backup of my bindings folder: after the update is finished, I reboot the PC, start the game to test, and if all is ok I make a fresh backup.
