Ship launched fighter concept

Had a go at modelling something which could work as a ship launched fighter.

One thing I think is really missing from ED is ships with a vertical orientation. I presume that's mainly because of the constraints on landing but I figured SLFs can be a little looser so long as the ship still fits in the slot. For that reason I made the ship fold up for landing, hopefully enough that it can fit in the slot.

My dream is that one day Frontier will open up mod tools to get some user-made ship designs in game... But for now I figured I'd just post this and see what people thought :)

I like it. Maybe have it that the cockpit can rotate when it goes into landing mode.

Frontier should do a competition of player submitted ship models and add the best ones.

Not that simple, they would probably have to rework the entire thing from the ground up using the player submitted model mainly as reference or concept art. I don't imagine player submitted meshes would just happen to fit all of the dev's restrictions when it comes to the models themselves, and then there's texture work and everything else associated with it.

Considering that it takes FDEV months, if not years, to add 2-3 new ships to the game, with plenty of concept art laying around, I don't see this happening, at least not in the context of a competition with free submissions.

Maybe.... maybe.... FDEV could do like other F2P games do it, and issue "supporter packs" where you can "add your own ship into the game", among other goodies like MTX. I don't know how costly it is for FDEV to add a new ship to the game, but even if such packages would be a few thousand dollars up, I still imagine there would be a few interested players. They could work with FDEV to design the ship together (starting from the player's initial vision i.e. "I want a new SLF which is vertical and has moving fuselage, fast and agile but fragile. Here's a sketch.").

The ship would of course be available to everyone, the supporter would just get bragging rights, and maybe their name forever immortalized in the ship lore :).

I've seen players spend thousands of dollars in another game to add their own unique "Staff of healing laser", maybe it could work there too.

DE released a small tool and a set of rules to let the community submit their designs for Warframe. That way the community sticks to the rules, and the design of the content just needs to be imported into their engine with minimal fuss and minor changes.

Would love to see vertical ships in the game.

The flat, horizontal design (e.g. Cobra and Viper) is very traditional and, well, boring.

Vertical styled ships would certainly add more originality and interesting ship models to the game, whether it is in the form of SLF's or larger ships.

Example from EVE.

'Ow you going to lad that?
Sideways? Or we going to get some nice shiny new stations? :D

Vertical, horizontal, diagonal - orientation does not really make any difference in space, where "up" and "down" do not matter.

Personally, I'd just like to see some asymmetric ship designs, as aerodynamics also does not really apply to ships that operate in space.

That Fighter would be a staple in my ships.
Loved the fact it is very diferent from the ones we have
If it would be a paid content I glady buy it.

ED WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A cool design indeed!

And I disagree with other comments that this design approach doesn't fit into the ED universe. I would like to think that in the year of 3304, humanity is finally free of any form of prejudice when it comes to engineering and design.

Nice concept, looks like a compound bow, good work OP.

However, unfortunately it doesn't fit with the aesthetic that FD's art team have created. If you look at their designs so far, you'll see what the design direction for the game is. It's a shame they're not more diverse with the aesthetic because I would love to see less, shall we say, "traditional" ship designs in the ED universe, but the good news is that maybe, if you covered all those exposed innards with plating and made it grey, it might fit in a lot better. [haha]

This looks really cool, but I don't think it would fit in the ED galaxy. All the ships in ED are following a certain visual identity, depending on which manufacturer designed the ship. None of the current manufacturer create things like this.
It's a really nice looking piece of modeling tho, what soft are you using ?

I don't know. I think that this concept looks very much like something that Lakon might cook up.

I really like the design. It looks like a fighter that would fly without shields but pack loads of firepower.

Totally agree.

This would be also a great ship design.

Have to disagree with you here - on both points.

Orientation does matter as soon as you want to fit the ship inside a hangar. A prime example for that would be the Type-7: a medium ship in every respect, except that it is a couple of meters too high to fit inside the medium hangar. And as soon as you rotate the ship, the access points won't fit any more to the base installation (plus, inside a station, there is some weak gravity - which is why they rotate in the first place).
So, even with a foldable, nominally small, fighter, you might end up needing a medium or even large pad just to accommodate the heigth. I'd be for it if FD introduced docking fees, based on pad size :D.

Aerodynamics - well, we are promised atmospheric landings and possibly some gas giant action. And while an aerodynamic ship (at least as far as aerodynamics of the existing ships go) doesn't necessarily mean visually symmetrical, that symmetry makes things much easier. Breaking it for no good reason is a wasted effort.

I gotta ask.... how would you get into it?

Ummmmm... I hadn't thought of that hahaha. I guess the whole cockpit could push forward and the seat then drops out the bottom?

I also need to give some thought to landing gear...

I generally don't like vertically-oriented designs, but that looks pretty cool.

That design aesthetic could make for some very cool-looking surface vehicle types too - utility models or combat walkers, I'm thinking.

I'm actually currently trying to design some kind of scifi tank that would work for ED. Will post that once I'm happy with it.

I actually have another design which uses some bits of this model for a jetbike:
