News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

Thanks for being positive! I'll buy you a beer at Elite Meet! What's a kipper?

This may be a stupid question but can't see it covered anywhere. Can we can name each ship individually? We don't have to keep changing the name somewhere every time we change our ship?

Also I think it would improve realism to have to go though some sort of in-game ship name registration procedure at a star port to change the name (after the initial naming, to allow explorers to get there name). You submit a form to request a name change under a new menu in the star port. Then after a time (allowing some form of censorship) you receive a message saying that the name has been approved and will be uploaded to your ship next time you doc, and name decals with be resprayed. I also think there should be an in-game cost associated with it.

Being able to change your ship name at will and for it (i assume) to suddenly appear on the outside of the ship doesn't seen realistic. I think if you are attacked or something and you are trying to find the person who did it, I think there name should be a good indication of the ship you are looking for. I know we will likely get repeated names but hopefully enough people will have enough imagination so that ship names will be somewhat unique.

Really? That's odd. I mean I'm always prepared to be proved wrong, but it doesn't say that in any of the patch notes.
.

From the 2.3 beta patch notes.....

"If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name"

The whole point of Vanity microtransaction is that since it's just vanity and important to you you are prone to invest a little bit on it.
3$ for naming you can apply to ANY number of ships forever with no limits it's actually pretty sensical.

But I guess people mean that the fact that a vanity items it's important means that it's important to be for free. For them.

And what about ships ID ? Is it visible in the HUD ? Is it always visible on the hull ?

I really could not care less for the name but ID tags for ships make a lot more sens.

It's good to have a clarification on everything. But I believe there was no mistake anyway regarding the display of the ship names on HUD or Cosmetics, and I really believe that a basic decal for ship name should be free for all. I still support this idea.

But I like above all the interaction of the producer with the community. Thank you for your attention. And yes I still spend my money on cosmetics sometimes. (I keep my support and hopes in development)

Thanks for the clarification Ed. Just a follow up question:

What about the SHIP-ID that you can also set in beta?
Will it be visible on all ships? Hidden? Do you need to buy a "name plate" (ID plate?) for that too, or is it free/included in base ones?
Just overall some more information about the ship ID please.

Thanks.

This ^ Does it apply to ID as well as name? If not, why is it there?

I would posit that this would still not satisfy everyone and would just make a huge cut out of the potential sales.

I will happily gift you a name pack if you admit your point is a ridiculous stance to take ;) :p

Thanks for the offer.

But, just see the actual price of the decals.

Power play decals are free, and the others are at 1.25€.

The price of the name plate is x2 the price of a simple decal !

I don't see why my point is a ridiculous stance to take.

I don't see where is the logic on the price of the name plate.

If you can explain it to me, I'll happily accept the gift you offer me ;)

I'm ready to pay for this, its not a problem at all.

But I think the way the price is establish is not logical.
I think we must having a default decal for free with the ship name, avaliable for all, and a paid version, saying at 1.5€, for those who'd want to customize it.

Great news Ed! This is a much better approach than how Sandro described it in the Q&A, much better and entirely respectful to the customers. Fantastic decision!

It would definitely satisfy more people than the system we have now. I'm not sure it'd "cut out potential sales", there are quite a few games with a similar system and people still buy tons of premium skins.

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Thanks Ed, that was our main concern. As I said in the other threads - "hopefully its a bug"...

Hi everyone,

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

Good, sounds fair!

They are generated (not unique I believe), but you can change them. The limit is 5, or 6 characters. Can't remember at the moment.

Ok... I hate the fact that you can change it at will (Name and appearance as well...) but it's still nice to have it generated and feels kinda unique !
