News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

This is because I buy pieces by pieces the machine to play this game that I can't afford for a thing that I can't see as an optional cosmetic feature.
So you've built your machine up over time, so you understand how to gradually save money.
How about next week, don't buy that £2 coffee and boom, there you go.

The amount of people in this thread who are happy to be nickel and dimed, milked like cashcows is depressing.

The amount of people who complain about the funding model is even more nauseating.
Seriously, can someone suggest a model which doesn't offend your sensibilities?

A nameplate is pretty much the paragon of an optional cosmetic feature.

Not for who haven't Horizon, and then the Commander creator. They'll be able to use vanity camera but not showing the only thing that will singularize them ?
That's why, for me, showing the ship name is not optional, or should not be.

No, because I prefer buying some milk to put on my coffee instead of being milked like a cashcow.

Good, the more people that complain, the more likely FDev is to change it.

How about having basic cosmetics in the game, either by default or unlockable via rank, achievements, etc, and premium, well designed cosmetics in the store?

I wouldnt say no to a 'everything for nothing' model myself... :p

This. I dont think there is really any situation where anyone but yourself can see it unless you are explicitly asking people to come over and read it. :p I was strongly against the idea of locking the HUD behind the plate, but having all plates in the store is perfectly fine with me.

Tell that to the people who sell you over priced milk!! :p how dare they charge for something that costs nothing for a cow to produce :p

Thank you for the clarification, Ed. Prepare for some incoming cash. At 2.50 per theme pack, i will get a couple of these for sure, right from the start.

And thank you for allowing ship scans showing the ship names for everyone. You did the right thing here :)

Get off my back Ozric, you're always on it.

Am I? I must be getting quite heavy by now. You'd have to define always though as I thought we'd only spoken once or twice before. That doesn't change the fact that marketing have nothing to do with this.

Factually not true. This is not just a change from what Sandro said, but also a change on what the patch notes explicitly said. They literally and unambiguously said that you NEED a plate to have others see your name, weeks ago.

Really? That's odd. I mean I'm always prepared to be proved wrong, but it doesn't say that in any of the patch notes.

I paid enough attention to know that the last beta version of 2.3 that I used didn't allow you to see other users' names. 'Namegate' provoked more than the usual suspects into protest, maybe that's why FD listened.

The last Beta 4 also didn't have the honk for the discovery scanner, but I doubt (hope) that wasn't intentional either. True that FD could have come out and said something then, but given they'd (to my knowledge) made no previous indication anything had changed from the initial plans, they probably didn't think there was a need.

Usually multiplayer F2P games are balanced like this, as it's important to maintain a minimum number of players in the matchmaking pool so finding matches is quick. People who are cash-poor and time-rich form the backbone of this, and will happily grind at a slower pace for free. See World of Tanks, or World of Warships.

People who can afford to pay are usually time-poor and cash rich, so can pay for some multiplier to their experience gain against others who play for free.

Elite Dangerous is not a game which needs to maintain a matchmaking pool (unlike Arena), so the rules that govern the economics behind what you can get for free are totally different. Players who play for long periods of time are nowhere near as beneficial to the game compared with those who play in short bursts. It's a much more equal footing.

I can't afford paying 5% of the total I paid to play this game. Its too high ! Its not fair.

Thanks for the clarification Ed. Just a follow up question:

What about the SHIP-ID that you can also set in beta?
Will it be visible on all ships? Hidden? Do you need to buy a "name plate" (ID plate?) for that too, or is it free/included in base ones?
Just overall some more information about the ship ID please.

Thanks.

I would posit that this would still not satisfy everyone and would just make a huge cut out of the potential sales.

...

I will happily gift you a name pack if you admit your point is a ridiculous stance to take ;) :p

....... then last night during answering over 120 questions Sandro said something that conflicted with previous information.

So what happens? Do people wait for things to be discussed the next working day? No, they fly off the handle as though the sky was falling in

Except this was from the mouth of the Lead Designer who had the majority of the questions provided in advance (apart from a few picked out of the Chat) and ample time to research and validate the answers, they were also written down and simply read out. On that basis I think it fair to say that what he said was taken to be the definitive reply.

Hence the noise and now the U-turn.
