News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

I will NOT buy one of these. If a tiny company like SCS Software can include visual customization options (and a wide array at that) with the $20 base price of their Truck Simulator titles, then so can FDev with the $30 base price of ED (even more so with $30 on top of that for Horizons). I'm not at all asking for everything- even SCS has some premium stuff- but at least SOME basic options other than lame stickers and a couple of limited-time paint jobs would make this game feel a lot closer to being worth what I paid.

Thanks for the clarification, Ed. Could you possibly clarify another thing while you're at it please? The name plates, can they be used for both ship names and the IDs or is it a separate purchase for the ID plates? If it's the latter, how much can we expect them to cost?

Awesome! Communication - not just good for couples.
Will buy product (tho I still think basic name plate should be free, however, £2 across the board is better than £10 per ship). Thanks.
Still want curved commodities screen / map sidebar in VR tho. [heart]

Also another question:

Will the nameplates look similar to how it is shown on 'The Ravager' in the pax east trailer?

Thanks for the clarification.

Can we have an option to make the naming plate persistent and non worn when using supercruise (as paint and decals are wiped after a few hundred Ly) ?

option : allow us to "repair" paint with AFMU : when in human bubble, it's pretty easy and cheap to repair paint in any station, but for explorers (or loooong range traders), it would be great to take nice screenshots with a "clean" ship, and readable ship name.

thanks :D

So the information in the livestream was what? A mistake?

By the way, packs, again? Stop putting things in packs!

Why not single items? I don't want to pay the price for three or six items, when I am ever going to use just one.

The packs, for once, make sense here--since the nameplates can apply to any ship you own (not just a single make of ship).

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!
Nice to see proper communication finally rearing its head. Well done.

Good news - but no one mentions the real problem: With all the Banks-inspired ship names, 22 characters simply aren't enough! So ... Can I buy more? :)

Bait and switch tactic, ages old... How to make users pay willingly for nameplates? I know, let's bait them that it will not be visible at all, and then later appear as "good masters" and have them pay for the name on hull.
Scummy cash grab in an AAA title still. Sorry not sorry cash cows, pardon, players. FDEV is starving from over delivering us the features in Horizons and they have so little money because it all went into developing AMAZING NEW CONTENT WHICH WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT AND IT WILL MELT PLAYER FACES OFF! And we totally didn't buy "known Hollywood movie IP" for wads of cash, promise!

Sigh...

In this case the packs are actually a good deal here since you can use these designs on any ship you own. It makes much more sense than locking a single good looking skin in a pack of other skins you don't want and for use only on a single make of ship/SRV/SLF.
