Maybe don't start with building the entrance? Leave it very simple until you know what the rest of the zoo will look like?

I play franchise so I usually build some habitats first and decorate the entrance later because of limited funds at the start. Also it seems easier because the zoo is already running and I can get busy adjusting things and getting ideas about how to integrate it with the rest.

But sometimes I just draw quite detailed plan on paper, get about 50% of it done in the game and then I have to improvise because it looks nothing like my initial plan 😂
I will try that, I typically play sandbox but this seems like a great idea, thanks.

hey guys, how do you guys build past your entrance, I can build entrances and habitats but building the stuff past the entrance, like I know about gift shops and entrance animals but it's pretty much everything else, do y'all have and pics of how you guys build your entrances and your transitions from the entrance to the themed area
I don't have a set plan or style per se but I find it good to leave a lot of open space as this will the point of heaviest foot traffic in the zoo. I make big plazas with branching pathways to split up the crowd and decorate the area with lots of flowerbeds, fountains, small parks or nature scenes, small kiosks etc. Then some signs directing people to different zones of the zoo. A big billboard advertising animal talks or feeding events is a fun touch. Good lighting, a water feature, thoughtful foliage are a must.

Got some lucky people on this thread! Almost making me feel a little jealous. In my 16 years on this rock so far I have seen around 260 species of mammals and the only real notable wildlife experiences I have are a drive through Jasper national park and whale watching off Iceland. The things you have both done sound awesome hopefully I will get to do something similar one day! :)
Well, I've had double your time on this rock and all these experiences happened once I was out of uni, so you've got plenty to look forward to! The world really opens up when you can choose what to do with your holidays 😊

You aren't alone. Ignoring zoos, the most interesting animal I have seen was a hawk who caught a bird out of the air, which was cool. But as Villanelle said, you have plenty to look forward to.

Like what the others said, don't worry too much about it right now. Like, how many times has everyone in this community started with their entrance and then closed the game for a week after working on their entrance area for a whole day? I have MANY times.
The only zoo I've actually come close to finishing still has the entrance building marked off, but not completed. So I would say just mark off the area around the guest spawner and entrance gate with some building pieces to allow the zoo to function at least, and then build the first habitat. Once you get a style or theme for the zoo established, then start up the actual entrance that visually fits in with the rest of the zoo.

Hope no one minds, but after yesterday's post, I would love to talk about my experience in general. For those who aren't aware of the news, Zooparc de Beauval has release a masive news with their announcement of the inclusion of Golden Snub-nosed Monkey to their collection, so I'll start talking about this magnificent creatures. I've seen 5 species of snub-nosed monkeys, and most of them I saw them while in a trip I went to China, except one (Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey), wich I saw at Vietnam. I think I tickled the curiosity of many members with the mention of Qiqi. Obviously, back in the day a lot of chinese native animal were preaty non-existing in the rest of the world, so I was preaty excited when a friend of mine invited me to see Qiqi at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Wuhan), and so I packed a suitcase and went one to explore the wonders of China. A lot of the snub-nosed monkey species are preaty beautiful, but my favourite it's the Stryker's Snub-nosed Monkey with it's stunning black coat.

Next post will be about my journey and difficulties of seeing beaked whales, so hope to see you next time!

Wait doesnt beauval also already have red shanked douc? They really do be collecting all the uber rare monkes.
God I adore the red-shanked douc. I have a vague memory of seeing them in Singapore like 18 years ago, but I could be wrong (I obviously remember the proboscis monkeys, though).

If I had to choose one more super rare monkey for the game, the red-shanked douc would be it, hands down.

On an unrelated note, it is both hilarious and infuriating when ChatGPT starts hallucinating. Because I'm cheap I refuse to fork out 35NZD a month for GPT-4o, so I mostly rely on 4oMini, which is generally trash (and by "rely" I mean "make use of occasionally because these are nothing but advanced text generators overhyped as an AI revolution"). I was trying to get it to help me come up with a common name for the Toxodon, one of the last South American native ungulates, that lived alongside the doedicurus, giant ground sloths, macrauchenia, and smilodon. It helped me a lot with macrauchenia and xenorhinotherium, but for some reason its robot brain broke for Toxodon and it took basically a hard reset of the bot's chat memory to get it to do it properly.

If anyone's interested, the names I've got are:
  • Makuna (Macrauchenia patachonica).
  • Guaxuna (Xenorhinotherium bahiense).
  • Tupara (Toxodon platensis).
All of these assume a native name was borrowed into Spanish/Portuguese and then into English. All of them mean some variation of "beast" (in order, Mapuche, Tupi, Guarani).

After I'm done with entrance habitats, facilities, and decorations, I just fill in the area with flora. If it's a temperate/city zoo, I might go for a field of flowers. If it's tropical, I go for all tropical foliage. If it's grasslands, I just fill it in with tall grass. I hope this helps.

Id recommend to look at real zoos to get an idea of how things could look like. Either via zoo tours on YT or google earth

As promised, I'll talk about my experience with beaked-whales. If you ask any cetacean-watcher, they will tell you that this species are a nightmare to watch because of their skittish behavior. I've seen 18 species of beaked-whales+2 species of bottlenose whales, wich are basically preaty close species to beaked-wheales, and are as shy as their relatives. It took me a while to see all species, and until my trip to SA, my beaked-whale list was quite poor. I was very happy to be able to finish my cetacean list with that trip, and specialy love Argentina, which I didn't expect to have so many species of beaked-whales. To finish I will say that I've never swam with beaked-wahles as they flee as soon as you touch the water, and because of that I missed to see Gray's Beaked Whale at Australia. Here's a photo of the species.

For the next post I would love to hear some personal preferences! Tell me animals that you would love to see feature in the next post.

Anyone here ever head of Paranthropus? It was the last autralopithecine and died out in the middle of the Pleistocene, but we're not certain as to why. Best guess is competition with Homo species, but imagine if this animal had persisted. It belongs to the same taxonomic tribe as humans (Homonini) so it would raise some serious questions about animals and "personhood".
