Newcomer / Intro Silent running advantages

I presume you cannot be targeted, so no gimbal or turret weapons able to fire?
Can you be highlighted in night vision? seems ridiculous if so!
Any other advantages?

You can't be targeted by AI at all. Only fixed weps n missiles.
Good for smuggling cos ur invisible. No scan.
Jus glide in and power up as u go thru the letter box.
Build a cool build ship for longevity. Medium class. My python smuggler is cool built. 200+ cargo
Personally I use sinks and she has 8 of em 2 modules engineered. Silent running can go wrong.
Popping a sink does the same thing.

How come bases inform you and fine you when using silent running for trespass? seem ridiculous that A: they know your there, B: they even know who to fine?

But how do they its me im n silent running!!!! If they cannot target me how do they know who to fine? its an immersion breaker

Silent running means masking your heat signature so that sensors can’t lock on to you. Not that they can’t see you outside the window.

Also, significant use in AX combat. Thargoids need sensor locks too.

Gimbals/turrets are still able to fire and hit you, even though you can't be targeted, by untargeting you/using forward fire function.
Against NPC ships, Silent Running isn't very useful at all. They don't seem to have trouble aquiring your ship.
AI has trouble scanning you when you drop below 20% heat, that's why heat sinks are just as effective for breaking scans.

A couple more things about Silent Running:

The closer you get to your opponent, the less effective it is. I can't remember if its 200m or 500m, but once you're within that range, you'll still appear on radar. EDIT: After thinking about it a bit I believe it has something to do with how good the sensors are. So a ship with 6A sensors can pick up a stealth ship on radar further out than a ship with 4D sensors.

Night vision makes spotting you easy if you stay in line-of-sight.

You'll appear on your target's radar (and be targetable) while firing on them.

There is an engineering modification for laser weapons called emissive, which enhances your signature if you're hit by them. It's the bane of Silent Running builds.

I was out in the boonies past Colonia when I turned Dangerous, and I got the invite for the engineer Lori Jameson a moment later.

Never think that the Pilots Federation (and everyone else in the galaxy, apparently) doesn't know exactly where you are and what you're doing.

Silent running doesn't hide you from your onboard computer, for sure :)

I figure the bases are using active sensors, they're broadcasting a signal that can be picked up across the system so there's no point in them trying to be stealthy, ships on the other hand are largely using passive sensors so don't notice you.
