Nothing, and I mean NOTHING ruins your immersion like a twelve year old typing about animal genitalia as he flies past you in his Sidewinder. >.<

For all of you touting how amazing it will be with people, I get the distinct feeling that none of you have actually played online games. No offense, but its not nearly as endearing as folks make it out to be. There is a reason you don't see much talking in MMO's like WOW or GW2.

Don't take my word for it, I'm sure you will all see for yourselves in a year. ;) I will relish watching you all lose your faith in humanity like I did.

eh? I played several MMO's.

Thumb rule is that the annoying trashtalk and kids are in starter areas.

I'm going to watch.

I'm going to watch as the griefers park their Panther Clippers in front of the only exit to a space station and you crash your ships into their hulls harmlessly.

I'll watch as the clans buy up all of the goods in a system for a unique trade that they have found.

I'll watch as you get private messages from trolls calling you unseemly names.

I'll watch as script-kiddies and coders build hacks that let them kill you in one shot with a pulse laser and fly faster then any other ship and dominate the space lanes.

I'll watch as the children scream into their mics as the mothers demand that the trash be taken out.

I'll watch as all of the dynamic events are ruined by sellers trying to peddle their goods with Capslock on.

I'll watch as newbies who are actually trolls ask the same question, over, and over, and over again.

I'll watch as someone with over 400 ping logs in from Zimbabwe and gets kill after kill because of latency issues.

I'll watch as entire systems are shut down because a certain clan feels like they own it.

I'll watch, as the accumulated greifers, trolls, and general filth fill up your spacelanes around you, and when you cry out "Save us!" I'm going to look over from my singleplayer experience, and whisper "No."

;)

Just to dispel this myth, people with higher ping values are more prone to victimisation. They see people .4 seconds in the past? Well, EVERYONE sees them .4 seconds in the past. And there are more people outside their ship than inside...

Nice generalisation - is it my turn to make one ?

Oh please. You know very well what I meant.

What I meant was that the average player of Elite, as was found out in that age thread, was over 40. I can't imagine folks over 40, with full time jobs, playing many time-intensive online games.

However, if you want to make snarky remarks, be my guest. It is the internet after all.

Actually no, I didn't .. I don't know you .. unless ... Steve ? ;)

I will make one comment to you - take a look at your lovely list of things you're going to do ("I'll watch ..." list) ... then look at the lovely misplaced wink at the end ... changes the context of your post.

Have you got special powers - I mean to look into the multiplayer game from your single player game - and whisper?

I will admit to making a mistake, I assumed everyone had read, or heard of The Watchmen, which is what I was sort of quoting!

The wink doesn't change my post at all, I was making a joke! :D In the Watchmen, a character by the name of Rorschach, says something similar, and he's generally known to be a pessimistic miser, which is kind of how I thought psykokow was seeing me.

Hence the joke!

Sorry it came across wrong.

For reference:

This city is afraid of me...I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their *** and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ****** and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

In all those hours playing you never had the dream/fantasy/desire you weren't playing alone?
...................
Elite is about Space. It's a depressing and scary thought you are alone.

No i never felt 'alone' in Elite or Frontier or FFE. I had other ships trying to blow me up, space stations full of police vipers that were just waiting for someone (me to begin with) to accidentally press their 'fire' button by mistake in the zero-g ballet that was docking.

I had different planets with different inhabitants (even if just text) that fired my imagination. Imagination peopled the universe with all manner of interesting folk, and in the later games i even got to see a few represented graphically. All these 'people' behaved as you would expect of 24th century denizens living in the world that Elite depicted.

No leet-speak, no griefing, no school yard banter, no e-peening, no immature or childish rants. It was, and still is a perfect place to spend my time.

1. If it works like FE2 then you have to vacate the dock space otherwise the Vipers come at you
2. Any group of players could do this before a clan gets a look in
3. Block button
4. FD will ban account hackers
5. Mute button
6. Block button
7. Block button
8. You would hope matchmaking will be ping matched
9. Not with instance limitations, reload for a new instance of that area
10. Block button, etc etc, and you won't be able to 'look' at MP from SP

I have no concerns regarding the MP game, I have been playing online games since Quake and have found that my best gaming experiences have involved other people...

...but I totally understand why people would like to play alone, I am not going to try scare anyone into doing anything they might not enjoy.

My best advice is... Try it you might just love it!

That works both ways...

PS. I have never seen watchmen and you what assumption makes ;)

Its PVP for me all the way.

I was very leery of PVP, but then played F1 and got hooked competing against humans (and others?). Yes there are idiots out there, but also a lot of nice, fun people as well.

Well hopefully on single player offline you can create say 3 saves so you can test out three careers, say 1 a trader, 1 explorer and another save just to do silly things in.

This means you can jump into any "career" you set within the branch.

I don't think you will be limited to one "save" per se. Many people at the founder level may for example have one save at the Founders world and another starting at say Lave so multiple saves for different "experiments" really are a giant must hopefully.

Having played only a little Elite, with such a steep learning curve, I am grateful for the safe nets they are putting in place. But I might still choose to play alone for the simple reason that I don't want my hard work to be taken out by other players. If there is a way to interact with other players, and not get into a fight Multi player but non aggressive, no PVP I think its called, servers then all good and well.

I think that later on when I've gained a few ships, striking out to tackle more risks might be fun. But knowing I won't have huge amounts of time to sink into the game, means not wanting to waste what I've built up on being blown to bits by more experienced, faster reactions teenagers who've spent the summer holidays building a master fleet of deadly craft ;-)
