Proposal Discussion -SLAVES in ED universe-

But what about if these are Imperial slaves. They have freely entered into a contract with their 'owners' and would be most annoyed about some idiot up and 'freeing' them like that. More than that, doing so in a Federation or Alliance system may well create a diplomatic incident.

They are free to return if they choose. There's bound to be a pilot heading down Empire way who would be happy to collect the reward for returning stolen property.

While adding a return/free slaves options to the authorities. Why not extend to all stolen/liberated/found good's.
Would be nice to instead of having to pay a fine for stolen good's give over the ware's and might even collect a finders fee ;).

On the subject of robots vs slaves in mining colony.

Who is more suitable to clean up those dusted up mining robot's and replace drilling head's than slaves?
Maintenance robot's also get all clogged up and need cleaning. And who would want to send the highly skilled robotics engineers into a hostile environment like an active mining operation. With all the dust and radiation. No better get slaves for the job and keep the skilled mechanic's as overseers and consultant's back in the office ;).
Same with industrial production. Need someone to clean the production line and vent's.

I can see in the year 3200 the existence of piracy and narcotics but slaves is out of the question.

First society by then would have developed robots and androids that could replace humans in every single aspect of life, even right now Japan is developing android for the sex industry. So by the year 3200 that would not be even an issue. The maintenance involve in keeping slaves would be very expensive. You have to feed them, clothe them, shelter them etc etc.

Slavery should not be part of the game. Piracy on the other hand always is an active part in our world, right now we still have pirates stealing ships no matter how strong is the military presence in the oceans.

There is no AI (declared illegal) in the ED universe lore so no androids etc. Imperial slaves are a mark of standing and rank. These people are rich and want everyone to know it.

When illegal stuff have stopped humans from doing exactly the opposite of what society says we should do? :D :D

Yeah I know, maybe we can introduce a group or race focused on freeing the slaves? :D

In one of the Dev Diary vids and I think in at least a couple of interviews DBOBE has said yes to slave-freeing missions or at least a mechanic where it can be done for profit. I'm at work just now so can't really spare the time to go looking.

That sounds awesome, thanks for the information.

"Saving" slaves.

Hi

Just a quick question as to whether this has ever been covered. I bought it up maybe 6-8 months ago but do not think it was ever answered by anyone other than..... "thats not a bad idea!" and just wondering if its working now as intended and I will need to just accept it.

I know it is "just a game" but if I am fighting a pirate and he drops off a number of tonnes of slaves in the hope I let him go....

Is there likely to be any mechanism where I can "rescue" them without fearing prosecution? I know its only a game, but I have no intention of dealing in slaves, but I do not like the idea that there will be no legal way to save these people from the slow death of space.
Personally I like the idea of getting a (small) payment for rescuing them and releasing to the custody of a space station - then possibly with there being a small %age chance of a slave possibly being a wealthy person of power who may either pay you a reward, OR give you missions to go after the group who maybe still have his family etc

or perhaps, he may turn out to be a decent pilot/engineer/merchant/ and offer to join your crew for cheap wages assuming you have a multicrew vessel.

thanks

Mike.

Hi

I read the 1st post about the slaves....

Tinman, sorry if I am being blind but where does it cover picking up slaves in dropped cannisters and "legally" dropping them off?

thanks

Under "Slaves and Passengers"

  • Commanders can purchase fake IDs as data chits
    • Using a cockpit interface a commander can apply an ID to a slave filled stasis canister/passenger cabin containing Imperial slaves which converts them into free passengers
    • When docked, a commander can offload such passengers to local immigration, for increased humanity reputation and increased reputation with factions that oppose slavery
    • Some humanitarian contacts can take delivery of such passengers, for increased humanity reputation (and improved relationship with the contact)
    • Imperial slaves do not in general view being freed as a good thing; they can be offloaded when docked, but there is a chance (based on commander reputations) that they will issue an Imperial attempted murder crime against the commander that frees them (the commander still gains increased reputation with factions that oppose slavery, but loses reputation with the Empire)
    • For every slave freed there is a chance that a reward encounter can be generated at some point in the future.

Hi thanks..... that "sort of" covers it however purchasing fake ids and forcibly changing an imperial slave to a free person (which they may not even want) sounds a little convoluted when all i would want to do is pick them up to stop them dying.

if they WANT to stay slaves, I am not really interested in forcibly making them go straight, esp if it may get me a murder warrant on my head.

so, that covers my question in some aspects, but does not really cover the base issue that imo every commander should be able to stop someone from dying without risk of punishment if they so choose imo, without having to have extra "stuff" to circumnavigate.

(note this isnt meant to be a whine - as such - :) - just an area where, as I understand it - the law does not seem that logical).

(If I saw some illegal immigrants trapped in a burning wagon on the M6 after an accident, or if I saw them sinking in a dumped shipping container whilst I was fishing out at sea. I would hope I would not get arrested for freeing them and taking to a hospital) :)
