Proposal Discussion -SLAVES in ED universe-

You mean they don't, um, "convert" to meat when they get dumped into space anymore?

Always made it a bit weird to find meat after blowing up another ship in Frontier.

Options Regarding Slaves

Ok, so I started today's adventure outside the massively cool station of Vonarburg Co-Operative in Wyrd. On my way out of the station I noticed that an npc trader got turned into swiss cheese on his way in to the station. Out of curiosity as I always do, I check to see what he was carrying that stirred up the hornet's nest. There was a couple of tons of Slaves floating amongst the debris (I would imagine even most unstable systems look down on slavery). I then watched as the canisters slowly ticked down and left when they got to about 25% integrity. I then started to think, in the case of living "cargo", I think it would be cool if scooping it wasn't a crime at all. In respect to slaves I think it would be neat if you could be given the option after scooping them to set them free. Now, I don't expect that a reward would be necessary (would not gripe to the rare one though), the idea that I rescued them would be reward in itself. If you decide to not be honorable and free them, then you should incur the wrath of the local authorities in my opinion. Maybe the slaves or at least one in a whole cargo hold of them even has useful skills and would want to join your crew (for when we have requirements on the bigger ships for more crew). At the very least it should be possible to be a rescue ship and take slaves in if you have passenger cabins and cargo bay life support. Thoughts?

Yah, you should certainly be able to rescue and manumit slaves.

In the original (perhaps ArcElite) if I remember it rightly you could scoop up an escape capsule and it'd be counted as a ton of slaves. Always was a bit harsh. :)

Ahoy mate,
i wholeheartedly agree on this suggestion,
and wish for it to be implemented.

It is one thing, to steal cargo or commit piracy,
but slavery is very low.
Maybe there could be an announcement in the local news, that CMDR XYZ,
abolished slave trade and rushed to the rescue, increasing reputation with the civillians of the system, not necessarily with the pesky government.

There will be many wonderful opportunitys in regards to slaves..check the DDA..In some cases slave cargo may expire (croak) and if you are in a deep space system where food is scarce, you may sell your slave steaks for a profit..numnunmnum

How to [stomach] selling Slaves

You may have seen it out there. Some wanted transports starts jettisoning canisters, and as it turns out, some of them had people in them!

Slaves. Those, poor unfortunates; thrown away like garbage! :( /

So, how to handle this unfortunate situation, while still making a profit?

Well, its a beta, so things like details are left up to the players, so; just look at it this way:

- rescue those poor people before their canister deteriorates and they all die.

- deliver them to a station with a black market

- en route, feel free to feel like a hero, and announce to your cargo that "I have rescued you from slavery, and am taking you to a slave liberation contact in a federation system"

- Get paid handsomely for those people.. not as a Price, but as a Reward for escorting them to their freedom!! The Black Market isnt all scum and villainy, there are organizations and underground railroads to be contacted there as well- funded secretly by donations from the rich and shame feeling Imperial Nobles.

- if you get scanned on the way, and incur a fine for such "stolen goods", stoically accept that cost and [short term] smear on your record for doing what is right- despite the clumsy implementation of system laws. Dont argue or try to make excuses about it, just nod in grim acceptance, and proceed on your way (its more noble that way)

 If you have any lingering doubts/qualms, just remember: Denial is just a river in Egypt.
