So, about those "functional differences" for new ships... (spoilers, maybe?)

It would be amazing if that could be an option on all ships, splitting internals into 2 or more of smaller sizes which total the size of the original. That would really open up customization for ship roles.
I've asked for this before, there's this little freebie game called Endless Sky on Steam which is pretty awesome btw, but I digress... That game features an optional brace that will split bigger slots into two at the cost of one of the sizes, ie; a size 7 would become two 3 slots, a 5 would be a 2 & 1. I think it would be an awesome addition myself, though I don't know how tricky it would be to implement.

From the original Elite manual's note on the Cobra III
"(the Mk 2 only reached prototype stage and was abandoned due to a design fault in the hull)"

The FFE manual expands on this slightly further
"This led to the development of the ill-fated Cobra Mk II, withdrawn immediately after launch due to the fact that the first prototype melted with the heat of acceleration."

Plenty of room for the details to be filled in further there.

(Interestingly, in FFE, Faulcon de Lacy were a Federal shipyard who had also manufactured the FDL. In the original Elite, as in Elite Dangerous, the FDL was a Zorgon Peterson design - though of course, in the original Elite the Cobra III was Cowell+Mgrath and the Cobra I was Paynou, Prossett and Salem. It's clearly not an area where consistency has been a priority...)
i cant remember where i saw it (or was told about it - if i had to guess it was the launch party) but i think there was an elite lore timeline made before the game launched which explained the history of the ship manufacturer changing and what not... that may be where i got my info on what i said about the cobra mk II because that is way to detailed for me to have imagined it.

edit ok i cheated as it was annoying me

not sure where those details came from originally but i assume its canon.

Aha, that's why I always connote FDL with FDL. Or it might just be the initials FDL - Faulcon DeLacy.

Poking around, it looks like it was to back up a (possibly unreleased?) Oolite expansion pack or fanfic, so not likely to be canon for Elite Dangerous.
oh is that so.......... thats a shame its quite good backstory. i guess for me they all blend in as i play or played at some point all of them. oolite put me on for my elite fix for years.

I'd say that for balance the splitters should come in sizes 3, 5 and maybe 7 and split the slot into two slots 2 sizes smaller. Class 3 splitter gives you 2 class 1 slots, class 5 gives 2 class 3 slots.
My feeling is that the main functional difference might be a huge hardpoint right there on top, behold:

I think the area in yellow circle is just greebles. Kraits have similar stuff on top of the cockpit.

No, it cannot be a class 4 hardpoint:
1. Looks too small.
2. Too close to the cockpit--the retracted gun would leave no room for the airlock/accessway all ships have at the back of the cockpit, most likely it'll even intrude the cockpit itself.
3. It completely blocks the after central class 3 HP from firing. Not enough vertical separation between the two.

The only place a class 4 HP can fit on this render is ventrally in the aft portion.

Maybe the new Python has its exit down a ladder, as in the Mamba? (I think it is the Mamba - been a long time since I have flown one)

So much cool lore in the old games... i would dearly love to have tionisla grave yard in elite dangerous

[...}
Tionisla orbital graveyard also appeared in in one of Drew Wagar's novels. Now that would be something which I'd be really interested in. Even if it doesn't have any gameplay (pick up leftover containers and materials?) it would make quite a sight to behold.

This is exactly one of the examples I had, of the sort of things I hoped Engineers would be, along with customisable joystick curves; Practical things, that lets you tune and customise existing things to your sensibilities, without unbalancing anything. -I specifically "prayed" that there would be no stats juggling. :p

Actually, that's a clear functional difference: give it a size 7 slot and it can use a universal limpet controller. That gives possibilities of complex limpet interactions with something.

I suppose the addition of any more special modules like the universal limpet one could extend this effect.

3 were made, 1 blew up on launch, 1 was scrapped just after launch and the other......... i think that blew up too but i cant remember for sure.

story has it iirc that the 2nd one wasnt scrapped but was bought by an eccentric billionaire who kept it in a secret collection of rare and unique ships in an asteroid belt somewhere.....**** Obviously none on that was in the original game, it was just fluff lore, but that was the cool thing in the original game. i lost loads of time looking for generation ships and space dredgers on my spectrum (I think by the time i got it on the amiga i realised it was all nonsense and not in game - tho the amiga did have the constrictor i think it was called, experimental ship that you could get in a unique mission late in the game ....... didnt that even have a cloaking device? (i may be making that up) but either way it was tough as nails.

***maybe not totally accurate, i could cheat and google but where is the fun in that :D
