So exploring, which ship?

I would advise against using Conda.
Yes, it has a great jump range, but it flies like a brick in SC. It can be hard to avoid dangerous objects (close binary stars, neutron stars, white dwarfs), and you will actually lose time just turning around to face next planet.

I've explored in a Conda, and that seems harsh. Bricks fly and manoeuvre much much better than a Conda in SC. (Don't get me wrong, I love my Conda - but it is terribad in SC for anything other than going forwards).

The guy has 1bn cr, and there a people suggesting budget ships?

Seriously, Anaconda or Asp. Asp if you want to enjoy the trip - best view, awesome heat handling, and very agile in SC.

Anaconda if you are trying to get far, fast, and you want to go to the fringes of the galaxy.

Anything else is a compromise, or you're doing it for vanity (a prettier ship), which is fine, but what are your exploration goals?

I agree with everything everyone says here, except for the fuel scoop part. Let me tell you why:
...*scooping stuff*

Here's the thing, the theory is sort of sound... But....

When you are truly trying to make distance, as I am now, where I'm 16030 Ly form Sol, and I just want to get the *expletive* home, the dive bomb scoop technique is slower. The reason, is the time it takes you to get out of the "heat zone" before you can activate your FSD without toasting your ship.

It's actually faster to let your fuel deplete, and then, at about 1/3 of a tank, do the dive bomb technique. To get the most out of it, you'll want the biggest scoop you can get. It probably saves about 10 seconds, but for me, that's about 5 minutes per 1000Ly (I need to scoop about every 6th jump). I've flown 200k Ly on my trip so far...

I have assets of around 1Bn so can use any ship but I'm thinking my Asp, or my Conda?

It's probably going to start end of Jan & I've got no real idea where to go, but plan on being away from bubble for at least a couple of months. Anyone got any pointers of must see places?

Thanks in advance for any pointers

A Sidewinder! ;)

I'm totally changing my opinions of this now that we have to factor in thruster size/quality with planetary landings.
Short answer:I don't know.
I've got a Conda ready for "Distant worlds" but I'm now seriously considering taking my Asp.
Decisions eh:)

This is quite an awesome thing, I think. People now have to think more about tailoring the ship to their specific intentions for the trip.

I'm still going to try and keep my jump range as high as possible. If that means sacrificing landing on planets with more than 2g, so be it, it's something I'll accept. Having said that, I still need to do a heap of testing in Bet once I get a chance. The Teleki Bengal (my current Asp) may, in fact, be turning back around and heading back to where she just came from...

Agreed. If I do the prospector role I don't actually have to land which technically means I can take a D5 thruster Conda and not sacrifice jump range. (Correct me if I'm wrong pls).
If I do want to land I'll have to go A6 and drop to 34LY range. Asp range. Not too shabby range.
Lots to consider.
But like you say, thinking is good, agreed.

But you will have jumponium to help you with the necessary long jumps.

Horizons makes you think about your load out based on ability to land on planets but gives you something back with the enhanced jump ability

Yeah I cant commit yet but its looking like Ill be going ExploConda with A6 thrusters A5 distributor and 2 SRVs. Range should be 34LY.

I'd recommend the Anaconda too. Contrary to my expectations, it hasn't performed considerably worse (for me) during planetary landings than an Asp. Granted, a Cobra Mk III or an Imperial Courier perform much better on that front, but if you want to go long distances, the Anaconda and Asp are still the best. Plus the Anaconda does look better on screenshots.

@ Digger: perhaps, but the materials required appear to be rare enough that you won't want to waste boosts on just shortening your trips.

So to see if I'm cut out for this exploring malarkey I'm doing a 7 day trip to nowhere in particular (point & go) and using my Conda. Many of you suggested getting best fuel scoop I can (which I've done) but 77M!!!!.........that made my eyes water when I hit purchase :D

It does, however, fill up my 80 T tanks quicker than I can pour a glass of wine ;)
