So, frame-rates since the patch, how are yours?

Nobody is that special, they flit about everywhere :)

Some observations on my rig and why I am now excited about Update 9 with its focus on mid-far planet surface rendering. Initially my thoughts were it was the near ie directly surrounding ground textures that were the main performance hit after Update 8 (which may link into the general performance hit in Conflict Zones which tend to be lots of NPC and AI activity around the Settlement exteriors.

I was playing around with super-sampling (im stuck with a non-gaming friendly 4K monitor) and as this was the main performance parameter on my GTX 1080, all other settings at Ultra (shadows high & terrain Ultra+) @ 4K. I noticed that the main quality impact in adjusting super-sampling was in the medium to far distance views and not the immediate terrain, especially the scambled medium distance. My thinking is if they can optimise the medium and distance it means hopefully will be able to step up the super-sampling quality but retain performance levels:

Here I just adjust AMD FSR level and Terrain Sampler Quality (Low = Tri-Linear, Med = Anisotropic x2, High = Anisotropic x4, Quality = Anisotropic x8),

So starting with the outer limits:

Note screenshots resized and saved as jpegs so they can be uploaded

AMD FSR: Quality
Terrain Sampler Quality: Quality

AMD FSR: Quality
Terrain Sampler Quality: Medium

AMD FSR: Quality
Terrain Sampler Quality: High

So you can see that Terrain Sampler Quality: Medium appears a good sweet spot between fps and quality with AMD FSR set to Quality.

Now bringing the AMD FSR down to Balanced
AMD FSR: Balanced
Terrain Sampler Quality: low

AMD FSR: Balanced
Terrain Sampler Quality: High

AMD FSR: Balanced
Terrain Sampler Quality: Quality

With AMD FSR set to Balanced, Terrain Sampler Quality: High appears a good sweet spot between fps and quality. But either way the main differences in quality appear in the medium and far distances.

Need to try AMD FSR Balanced and Terrain Sampler Quality: Med in Conflict zones now

For Planet Terrain the AMD FSR: Balanced Terrain Sampler Quality: High confuration appears to the be the sweet spot for my rig.

Strong improvements.
I dont think they have mentioned terrain optimisations in the past couple of updates, the reason I did this was to show that perhaps optimisations of the Mid to Far Distance terrain views mentioned for Update 9, will reap benefits, even for Settlement exteriors.

Well, all kinds of rendering processes which also (indirectly) involve the terrain and should improve performance on planet surfaces. It has improved for me, but nowhere near the performance I was getting in Horizons.

Same here, in horizon I have flat 144, here is on foot sometimes around 40-50-60 - what's is ok with me, today few min ago I land on planetary settlement and I get 10FPS !!! Looks like stuff is loading in background and after few sec frame rate back up to 30 to back down to 5... something really wrong, don't understand why...

BTW - I noticed something strange - when I approach station to landing - dropping from supercruse I see like one sec delay before station is loading and display - don't know if is this only my bug or something else? I haven't see that in update 7, new case ;)

Lots of people saw the station loading thing. Weirdly I only experienced it once so far, literally first play session after Update 8 but I have been messing with settings a lot since then so who knows!

Same here, I saw half a station for a few secs.

The station loading lag is acknowledged and being worked on:

As usual following any major update to Elite Dangerous, thank you so, so much for the feedback and reports here in the Forums.
A few issues captured I will mention from the magic notebook (primarily for Odyssey at this moment but thought you might be interested) are:
  • Investigations into Colonia Engineer progression issues.
  • Facilities list in System Map is appearing blank (all platforms).
  • Some odd behaviour with reactivation, massacre, restore missions not completing for Commanders.
  • Delayed loading of stations (pop!)
  • Strange behaviour around Unrestricted Access areas acting Restricted.
    • Instances of Commanders being attacked for being in a Restricted Areas, but the area was not restricted.
  • "Backward Engine Trails" (Elite...I love you but why?)

If they ultimately merge Horizons into Odyssey then I believe they will lose a lot of players.
From what I have read and experienced myself there seems to be a 50%+ drop in frames between the two versions.
After the many months and 8 patches, Odyssey basically sucks and will never port over to our console Commanders.

Update on my earlier post:

I have found that the FPS around Surface Conflict Zones are absolutely abysmal when you are in a ship.

I was testing out a new ground assault ship and was getting less the a frame a second.

Not sure if this is new because I've never flew around a base in a surface conflict zone before.

I posted a thread in the fourms about this

There weren't other CMDRs present in the Conflict Zone by any chance? I have found that usually tanks the performance there, might be worth trying in solo if you were in open previously
